LOST ALPHA PART 1

Chapter 1

Lunar light painted the forest clearing in silver, illuminating the grazing doe. The smell of damp earth filled the air, the remains of a well needed rain shower. Travis stalked through the underbrush, a silent killer watching his prey. The other wolves in the Bowshot pack had grown lazy on human food; he couldn’t allow that to happen to him. He needed to hunt, to kill, to feel his prey’s terror as he leapt upon it and sunk his razor sharp teeth into its soft flesh. This doe was perfect; she had wandered out on her own for a midnight snack, the last mistake she would ever make.

He crouched low to the ground, his powerful back legs tensing and revealing slabs of muscle. In human form he was an impressively built country boy, but in wolf form he was a deadly killing machine. Felines were sleek, built for chasing prey down and capturing it, but a wolf was big and strong, built for catching unknowing prey from behind and finishing them off quickly. His lips pulled back in a snarl, revealing rows of perfectly white teeth perfect for rending flesh. Murderous intent sat just behind his orange eyes, watching the doe’s every movement.

Now or never,
he thought.
This is what you are built for. You are not built to eat peanut butter and jelly. Now!

Just as he began to explode out of the undergrowth a loud howl went up above the trees, spooking the doe. Travis looked around for the source of the howl which was quickly joined by others. He turned back to see the doe running into the forest, escaping death on this night.

Dammit,
he thought.
What the hell is going on?

The black hair on the back of his neck began to stand up as he smelled something else in the air. He pushed his large snout straight up into the air and inhaled deeply. There was no mistaking it. Blood. Suddenly the howls he heard became distressed, like a cry for help. He heard a monstrous bark and growl which sounded just like his alpha, Jacob.

The pack!
his mind screamed.

The undergrowth trampled underneath him as he ran full speed back towards Bowshot, his pack’s home. They were in trouble and they needed their powerful beta to assist the alpha in leading.

As he bounded through the forest, white foam appearing on his lips, another smell greeted him. He couldn’t quite place it as he ran; his brain was an addled frenzy of fear and anger. Something had thought necessary to attack his pack in the middle of the night on their turf. They would pay for this transgression- nobody screwed with the proud Bowshot pack. They had carved their home out here close to Wounded Bow, Oklahoma. The locals didn’t screw with them and they didn’t screw with the locals so it was a nice set up. This was their land and they were sure to remind any hunter stupid enough to wander out here the mistake he had made. But they never killed the townspeople; it was a symbiotic relationship that had endured for the last 25 years since his alpha wolf, Jacob, had purchased the land. The locals knew there was something odd about the residents of Bowshot, but the pack kept to themselves and didn’t bother anybody so the locals just let it slide.

This wasn’t a mixed up hunter though, this was something intending to cause harm to the pack. As he ran his mind focused on the strange smell, trying to place it in the rolodex that was his brain. He let out a deep throated bark as rage filled his brain. He knew the smell. Rats! It was wererats attacking their turf. That didn’t add up in Travis’ brain, rats shouldn’t be attacking wolves. Rats were small, no match for a wolf. The only time they would be deadly is if they were in lunar form, a twisted amalgamation of man and rat. The full moon was still a week away; no way they could shift into lunar form right now. Besides, if a rat was in lunar form then a wolf would be too and they’d still be no match for the bigger, stronger lupines. The rats weren’t alone; they must have brought something else to Bowshot.

Travis knew he was far away, too far to join the fight immediately. As he drew nearer, the howls of his pack began to die out, replaced by pained yelps. He tried to quicken his pace, but he was giving this run everything he had.

Finally, the bushes just outside Bowshot parted as he charged full speed into the fray. His eyes immediately scanned the area, trying to find something to dismember. He was alone though, completely alone.

Bowshot was a small shanty town, with a gravel road down the middle surrounded by small cottages. He had come out of the forest just behind one such row of cottages, unable to see anything in the road.

The wererat smell was dissipating as the strong, coppery smell of blood filled the air. A feeling of panic immediately took over for the anger he had felt. Travis ran between two cottages, stopping on the gravel street that ran down the middle of Bowshot.

Travis sat down on his haunches, a loud whine escaping his lips. His pack was laid out in front of him, their bodies torn apart and broken. A few were in human form, claw and bite marks covering their bodies. Others had shifted into wolf form, but they shared the same wounds. Whoever had hit them struck quickly and efficiently. Wererats weren’t this organized; there was no way they could be, they were filthy creatures.

He looked up, his eyes locking on something in the forest. There was a pair of blood red eyes staring back at him through the trees beyond Bowshot. He is hair stood up again and he growled at the figure which remained hidden. He started to advance but the eyes vanished just as quickly as they appeared.

Travis shifted back into his human form, trying to get a better look at his surroundings.

“Show yourself, coward!” he screamed into the forest. “Face me!”

He stood with his fists clenched, waiting for his pack’s murderer to reappear, but nobody came. He was truly alone now.

“FUCK!” he screamed to the night sky. He could hear his curse echoing through the forest, nobody else around to hear it. “Jacob?”

He searched the bodies, trying to find the body of his alpha. Finally he stopped over a large silver wolf, its side rising and lowering quickly as it labored through breathing.

“Jacob!” he yelled, dropping to his knees beside the alpha wolf. Jacob had been the largest wolf Travis had ever seen, resembling a small horse more than a wolf when he shifted. Now his broken body looked small as he clung to life.

Tears began to well up in Travis’ eyes as he looked upon the body of his surrogate father. Jacob had been grooming Travis to ascend to the position of alpha when his time came, but he had never expected it to come this quickly. One of Jacob’s large amber eyes looked up at Travis and a low whine escaped his throat.

“It’s okay Jacob,” Travis said, petting his bloody fur. “You’ll be ok. We’ll find who did this and make them pay.”

Jacob whined again, telling Travis that it wasn’t ok. He put on of his large hands in front of his alpha’s mouth, allowing him to tenderly lick his hand. Jacob let out a slow, mournful whine before lowering his head to the ground. His breathing was becoming ragged and short.

“No Jacob!” Travis cried. “Don’t leave me yet. I’m not ready. Please live.”

He buried his face in Jacob’s side as his tears flooded onto the blood soaked fur. It took him a few moments to realize that Jacob was no longer breathing his body had quit moving. Jacob looked down at his surrogate father and best friend. He was alone now. He had ascended to alpha by default, but he had no pack.

Travis leaned back on his knees and shouted to the night sky.

“Noooooooo!” he screamed. “Jacob!”

His screams of anguish were replaced with howls as he uncontrollably shifted into wolf form, his pain too much to handle.

Chapter 2

Paige Strong knew she looked hot today. She had chosen a tight white skirt that showed off every one of her luscious curves. Up top she wore a white tank top with a purple see-through shirt over it that just barely allowed a glimpse of her buxom chest and large cleavage. She looked in the rearview mirror and made a kissy face at herself as she sped down Highway 62 in her cherry red Ford Mustang.

“You are sexy,” she said to herself as she punched the accelerator with one perfectly pedicured foot. “I’d fuck you, and I’m not a lesbian.”

She laughed at her jokes, feeling a bit cocky, but when she had a sexy day she knew she had to take advantage of it.

Today was a special day anyway; she was heading over to Lawton to see her boyfriend Randy on his birthday. She had a big day planned for him that would hopefully end in wild, rough sex. She was a curvy girl and she loved it when her man roughed her up in bed. Randy had always been too gentle and she hoped taking him out for drinks and a day of fun would bring out his wild side.

She felt the familiar tingle of arousal between her legs as she thought about Randy throwing her down on the bed and ripping her skirt off. It was an expensive skirt, but she would gladly sacrifice it for his pleasure.

As she continued her breakneck speeding her phone rang, she looked down to see her brother’s face dominating her screen.

“God dammit,” she said as she answered. “What?”

“Paige, where the hell are you?” he demanded.

“I told you I was taking the weekend off, Billy!” she said with annoyance in her voice. She had told Billy this several time, actually. “Duncan Meyer is going to cover my shifts.”

“Well Duncan ain’t showed up to work,” Billy said. “What are you going to do about this?”

“Nothing, Billy,” she said. “I’m almost to Lawton.”

“Oh fuck. Paige,” he said. She didn’t like his tone, but there wasn’t much she could do about it. “You’re still messing with that loser over there? Well have a good weekend; guess I’ll figure something out!”

“Billy. calm…” she started to say, but the phone clicked off. “What an asshole.”

Billy was her older brother and he owned the Wounded Bow Lunchbox, a combination restaurant and gas station. It was left to him by her parents who had finally had enough of small town Oklahoma; they packed up and retired to Florida. Now she only saw them on holidays, when they complained about being back in the sticks. She’d been working there since she was a little kid, but when Billy took over everything changed. He was such an asshole, always domineering and overbearing. Her mother was a much nicer boss. Now she was going to catch hell when she made it home.
