He sat up, pulling her with him. “Lauren, I know this is a little late, but will you marry me?” She laughed and nodded her head. He smiled and took her face in his hands. “I love you. I've loved you for over seven years.” She smiled when he said this. “I want to keep loving you.”
“Yes, I love you, too.” She leaned in and kissed him. “Move into the house and help me make it a home.”
He smiled and took her lips again, pulling her back down to the bed just as the sun set behind the hills.
Epilogue
“You've ruined me.” Lauren leaned back in her chair and looked across the table at Chase.
“How do you figure?” He smiled over at her and took a drink of his beer.
“I'm going to expect presents like this every year from now on.” She nodded to her new diamond wedding ring. It was his gift to her on their eight-year anniversary.
They were sitting out back on the deck of the house shortly after dinner. Her sisters had quickly disappeared after eating, taking the dirty dishes and plates with them.
“Good.” He stood and held out his hand. “Take a walk with me.”
It had been six months since the cabin had burned down. The dark spot where it used to be still sat empty. They'd talked about rebuilding it, but wanted to focus on fixing the house up first.
They had been more successful at the auction last year than expected and had had so much fun in Tyler together that they’d stayed an extra few days as a mini vacation, almost like a honeymoon.
When she’d returned home, she was shocked to see a fresh coat of paint on the house, all new windows, and a new water heater, something she now couldn't live without. Over the course of the next months, Chase had put so much effort into fixing up the house that at this point it almost looked new.
Reaching out, she took his hand and smiled as he pulled her into his arms for a quick kiss. Then he turned and with her hand in his, started walking into the fields.
When they reached a small hill, he turned her and they stood hand in hand looking at the house with the sun setting behind them. The new windows gleamed in the dying sunlight. The fresh paint and new roof made the place look brand new.
“It's a great place,” he said and pulled her into his arms.
“Yes, it is.” She sighed and turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around him.
When he started moving back and forth, she leaned her head against his chest. “What are you doing?”
“Dancing.” He chuckled.
“There's no music.” She looked up and smiled at him.
“There doesn't need to be any to dance in our fields.” He took her hand in his, putting his other on her waist and spinning her in a circle. Then he dipped her low and kissed her until her head spun.
When he stood her back up, she looked into his eyes and knew that she was right where she wanted to be, in the arms of the perfect husband.
