Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb
that was
hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.
54
That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55
And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.
56
Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

24 Nowonthe first
day
of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain
other women
with them,
a
came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
2
But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3
Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4
And it happened, as they were greatly
a
perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.
5
Then, as they were afraid and bowed
their
faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
6
He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,
7
saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’”
8
And they remembered His words.
9
Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
10
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary
the mother
of James, and the other
women
with them, who told these things to the apostles.
11
And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.
12
But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying
a
by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus
13
Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles
a
from Jerusalem.
14
And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15
So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.
16
But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17
And He said to them, “What kind of conversation
is
this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”
a
18
Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there ly

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20
and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.
21
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
22
Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.
23
When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.
22
And certain of those
who were
with us went to the tomb and found
it
just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
25
Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
26
Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”
27
And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

The Disciples’ Eyes Opened
28
Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.
29
But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
30
Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke
it,
and gave it to them.
31
Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
33
So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those
who were
with them gathered together,
34
saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”
35
And they told about the things
that had happened
on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36
Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.”
37
But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.
38
And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39
Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
40
When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
a
41
But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, “Have you any food here?”
42
So they gave Him a piece of

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—
23
Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken
a
by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;
24
whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
25
For David says concerning Him:

‘I foresaw the LORD always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26
Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
27
For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy
One to see corruption.

29
“Men
and
brethren, let
me
speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30
Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
a
31
he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32
This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
33
Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

“For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

11
Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed.
12
So when Peter saw
it,
he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?
13
The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let
Him
go.
14
But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,
15
and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.
16
And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which
comes
through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
17
“Yet now, brethren, I know that you did
it
in ignorance, as
did
also your rulers.
18
But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
19
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
20
and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before,
a
21
whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
22
For Moses truly said to the fathers,
‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you.
23
And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people. ’
a
24
Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also foretold
a
these days.
25
You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham,
‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’
a
26
To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one
of you
from your iniquities.”

Peter and John Arrested

4 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,
2
being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
25
And they laid hands on them, and put
them
in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
4
However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

Addressing the Sanhedrin
5
And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes,
6
as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
7
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or bof Israel:
9
If we this day are judged for a good deed
done
to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well,
10
let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.
11
This is the
‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’
a
12
Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Name of Jesus Forbidden
13
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
14
And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15
But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16
saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them
is
evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny
it.
17
But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”
18
So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
19
But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.
20
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
21
So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done.
22
For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.

Psalm 118:22
Prayer for Boldness
23
And being let go, they went to their own
companions
and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
24
So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You
are
God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,
25
who by the mouth of Your servant David
a
have said:
‘Why did the nations rage,
And the people plot vain things?
26
The kings of the earth took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the LORD and against His Christ.’
a
27
“For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together
28
to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.
29
Now, Lorid, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word,
30
by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
31
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Sharing in All Things
32
Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.
33
And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.
34
Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,
35
and laid
them
at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

Lying to the Holy Spirit

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.
2
And he kept back
part
of the proceeds, his wife also being aware
of it,
and brought a certain part and laid
it
at the apostles’ feet.
3
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back
part
of the price of the land for yourself?
4
While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
5
Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.
6
And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried
him
out, and buried
him.
7
Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8
And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”
She said, “Yes, for so much.”
9
Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband
are
at the door, and they will carry you out.”
10
Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying lso set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak blasphemous
a
words against this holy place and the law;
14
for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”
15
And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

Stephen’s Address: The Call of
Abraham

7 Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2
And he said, “Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,
3
and said to him,
‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’
a
4
Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.
5
And
God
gave him no inheritance in it, not even
enough
to set his foot on. But even when
Abraham
had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him.
27
But God spoke in this way: that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage and oppress
them
four hundred years.
28
‘And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will judge,’
a
said God,
‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’

Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so
Abraham
begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac
begot
Jacob, and Jacob

The Patriarchs in Egypt
9
“And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him
10
and delivered him out of all his troubles, and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11
Now a famine and great trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance.
12
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
13
And the second
time
Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh.
14
Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to
him,
seventy-five

15
So Jacob went down to Egypt; and he died, he and our fathers.
16
And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor,

of Shechem.
