Chapter One

Lynne snatched a french fry off Steve’s plate and quickly popped it in her mouth. His face contorted with instant disgust.

“What did you do that for?” Shocked, he pushed the plate away from him. His bottom lip curled up, and his chin jutted forward. “I
was
hungry, now I can’t eat it.”

“Oh for heaven sake! I only took one. You can still eat the rest.” Lynne didn’t know whether she should be offended or disguise her shock. Whatever her reaction, she never anticipated watching a grown man throw a temper tantrum. She thought she was dating a college professor, but surprise—surprise—spoiled rotten brat had come out to play on their date tonight.

“Why don’t you order your own plate?” The derisive sneer instinctively made her pull back.

Steve and Lynne had always gotten along great in the past, but they’d never gotten really close. She could never put a finger on what was missing, but now she realized what it was. There was no intimacy, and there never would be. Not to mention the chemistry in the relationship. No sizzle. She frowned, just irritated enough to share how she felt. “I only wanted to taste one. I didn’t want to fill up on fries.”

“You always do that.”

“Do what?” Lynne answered, confused by this sudden turn of events.

“Pretend to order a salad, like you’re not hungry or something, and then eat half my food.”

“I don’t want to eat a lot of deep fried foods.”

“Then why eat my fries?”

“It was because I only wanted a taste of the fat drenched potato not to completely ruin my diet.”

“I don’t understand what the difference is. You either want the french fries or you don’t. If you want fries, then order a side for yourself.” He threw his hands up out of frustration, as if she would never get his point without some added theatrics.

“Oh, forget it. I’m going home.” Lynne stood up and put her jacket on. As an afterthought, she threw her purse over a shoulder.

“Okay, but let me get a dessert first.” He always had been a little slow on the uptake.

“Don’t bother coming with me.” She was fed up with the bad attitude. How could he french kiss her but get all grossed out about sharing food? It was the same germs he was sharing. “For all I care, you can take the whole freaking night to eat. I’m out of here. I’ll catch a taxi.” She turned her back, striding toward the door. She wasn’t willing to wait for an apology. He never gave them. He didn’t get her, and he never would. She wasn’t looking for a man she had to housetrain or teach manners.

She was ten feet away—nearly to the door—before he bothered to say, “I’ll call you later, okay?”

“Let me reiterate—don’t bother. You can eat alone for the rest of your life. I don’t care.” Every eye in the small dining room turned to see his reaction before turning back to watch her. It was a stupid tennis match gone wrong. She tipped an invisible hat with her forefinger. “See you around, buddy.”
Call me when you grow up.
The door closed behind her, and she wished she could have given it a good slam.

What a loser. He was probably sitting there trying to decide what to do next. She wondered if he would bother chasing after her, but she hoped he didn’t at this point. She was so over him right now.

Get a clue!

She laughed, and an old lady passing gave her a strange look. “Sorry, it isn’t about you.” It would take the poor sucker a week to figure out he’d been dumped and another week to wonder what he’d done wrong. She was well rid of him. How weird. She felt nothing about breaking up. Usually there was remorse, sadness, or loss. This time she felt completely devoid of emotion.

The lonely city street stretched before her, and she realized she was alone in life, yet again.

* * * *

Lynne swept inside her apartment to find her two closest friends waiting for her. Her roommate Sandy sat on the couch watching TV and shoveling ice cream into her face. Her best friend Kurt sat next to her, beer in hand, his eyes glued to the wrestling show, too.

Lynne had given Kurt a key to her place the day he helped her move in, and he used it frequently. Why couldn’t she find a guy like Kurt? She frowned. No matter who she dated, she wound up with a jerk like Steve. Why couldn’t she find an easygoing guy she got along with like peanut butter and jelly? Kurt was the PB to her J, but he was strictly off limits unless she wanted to lose her job as a college professor. He was still a student, and she couldn’t even go there with him. There were rules about these sorts of things, and at the very least, she would be put on administrative leave while the University investigated their relationship.

No.

She and Kurt were never going to hook up.

Kurt picked up the
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue
and brushed a stray lock of his blond hair off his forehead which flopped right back. He looked up and smiled. “Did you have a good time tonight?”

Lynne rolled her eyes, depositing her purse next to the ceramic Elvis statue on her antique cherry sofa table. “I came back alone. Is that ever a good sign?”

“Ah, honey, sounds like someone needs a hug.” He stood, opening his arms to offer her an embrace, and her insides melted. She stepped closer, allowing him to surround her in his warmth. She immediately felt safe and happy. It was where she belonged. Geez, why didn’t she think of him as boyfriend material? Thinking back, there had always been a guy in her life, or a guy in the way. And, there was always the way he acted. Kurt never showed any sign he was interested in dating her. She shouldn’t even be thinking like this. He was twenty years younger than her. It would be like robbing the cradle.

She exhaled deeply, leaning against Kurt’s broad chest. “I broke up with Steve tonight. Another one bites the dust.” She chuckled to hide her anger and embarrassment.

“Hey, don’t let it get you down, sugar. You’re a beautiful woman. You’ll meet the right guy one of these days. Don’t give up. He’s out there somewhere waiting for you.”

“Oh yeah, well where are they? I’m tired of dating losers. I want a real man.”

Kurt lowered his arms releasing her, leaving her cold, empty, and lonely. Her arms ached to reach out and pull him close. “Hell, honey. Steve didn’t deserve you, anyway. In fact, most of the jerks I see you date don’t deserve you.”

His muscular arm draped around her neck, and he dipped in low to give her a quick peck of a kiss. “The right guy might be right around the corner. Don’t give up now.”

“I got ice cream!” Sandy offered up a spoon. “Sit down and share it with me. Ice cream makes everything better.”

Lynne sighed, wishing Kurt would catch on to how she was beginning to feel about him. She should just speak up and get it out in the open, but instead she said, “Thanks, Sandy. You always know the right thing to say when I’m down. I am going to miss you when you move out next week.” Why—oh—why did Sandy have to go and get engaged to Joe? It was going to be so lonely when she moved out. Lynne was dreading it. While she was happy for Sandy, it intensified her feelings of failure.

Sandy grinned. “It won’t be next week. I already cleaned out my bedroom. Joe helped me. I was just waiting around to say goodbye.”

“Ohhh!” Lynne pouted and scraped the spoon along the Death by Chocolate Ice Cream to create a curl on the silver tip. “Now what am I going to do when I want to whine about my man trouble?”

“You can always come crying to me.” Kurt sat down next to Lynne, and his dimpled grin turned her insides to liquid.

“Yeah, right.” She rolled her eyes and licked ice cream from the spoon. “Just like you want to hear about how bad my migraines are or how terrible the students were today. Kurt, there are times I need a woman to talk to.”

“I can still help to get your mind off another guy.”

“Like how?” She raised one arched eyebrow skeptically.

“Like, I could take you out on a romantic date to get your mind off the other man.” She couldn’t help but notice the way his lips curved in a seductive smile.

“Oh really?” Her voice rose slightly as she contemplated his offer. Was he serious? What would it mean to their friendship? A romance with one of her best friends would change everything, and if it ended badly, it could wreck their friendship. He probably made the offer half jokingly, but having a boyfriend who was also her best friend held a certain appeal to her.

“Yeah, or at least help you to forget the loser. You deserve better than Steve. Tell you what, I’m taking you out tomorrow night, and I won’t take no for an answer.”

“Okay, but expect a lot of wallowing and a hefty dose of self-pity.” She handed him a spoon and watched while he dived the tip of it directly into the container. At least her girl cooties didn’t bother Kurt as much as they had Steve. He was the polar opposite of dear ol’ Steve.

“Pity parties are the best kind. Want me to bring the cheese and wine?”

“You know I’d tag along on the pity train, but I’m meeting Joe’s parents tomorrow.” Sandy interrupted.

“Don’t worry Sandy, we promise not to get into trouble. We’re old enough to behave without a chaperone.” Butterflies flew high, tickling Lynne’s stomach. There was a first time for everything, and this seemed to be it. Kurt’s suggestion knocked her for a loop, and the chance for this to turn into something more got her all hot and bothered in places she didn’t want to admit. Kurt had a rock hard body from all the spring training for the football team, and she imagined he could go all night long in the bedroom.

“But what if I
want
to start a little trouble?” Kurt asked.

Lynne smirked, holding back her laughter. “Careful. I don’t like too much trouble, and you don’t want me to give you a spanking for acting so naughty.”

His voice was deep and low. “What if I like spankings?”

The breath caught in her throat. They never flirted quite this way before, but she liked it, even if it was all empty words as far as Kurt was concerned. She was serious and hoped like hell he was, too.

“Then I guess we’re both in trouble because I like to spank naughty boys.”
