Read Maggie Smith: A Biography Online
Authors: Michael Coveney
In Charles Dance's
Ladies in Lavender
(2004), Maggie dubbed the two of them ‘the lavender bags’
Maggie as the acerbic Lady Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, with Shirley MacLaine as Martha Levinson, in
Downton Abbey
(2010–15), the biggest drama series export in ITV television history
At the annual flower show, Lady Violet – with Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham and Penelope Wilton as Isobel Crawley – upsets tradition by awarding her own customary first prize to the gardener
Two very different popular movies in 2015: John Madden's
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
with (left to right) Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle, Judi Dench and Bill Nighy joining in the wedding party
and Nicholas Hytner's
The Lady in the Van,
with Alex Jennings as Alan Bennett pushing Maggie's defiant old crone around Camden Town … downhill all the way?
It strikes me that, from the moment I first saw her on the Old Vic stage in 1964, Maggie’s career has been rushing through my life like a sparkling river, and it was thanks in the first place to Beverley Cross, who provided information, contacts and encouragement, and to Nathaniel Smith, that I was able to get going. Ian Smith, Maggie’s brother in New York, now retired and living in France, was crucially informative, as were Maggie’s sons with Robert Stephens, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
Documents, recordings and viewing facilities were loaned or provided by the BBC, the Stratford Festival, Ontario, Julie Pearce and Marcus Prince at the British Film Institute, Alastair Macaulay, the Oxford High School for Girls, Kathleen Tynan, Sandy Wilson and B. A. Young. I acknowledge the
Evening Standard
for permission to reproduce part of an interview published in 2007.
I am grateful to David Pelizzari of the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta, who conducted an interview on my behalf with Robin Phillips, and to Robin Phillips himself. The following spared time to be interviewed: Edward Albee, Dorothy Bartholomew, Brian Bedford, Alan Bennett, Michael Blakemore, Diana Boddington, Margaret Bonfiglioli (née Slater), Ronald Bryden, Simon Callow, Jack Clayton, Sir Michael Codron, Bridget Davidson (née Senior), Dame Judi Dench, Zoë Dominic, Christopher Downes, Patrick Dromgoole, Veryl and Peter Dunlop, Lord Fellowes, Angela Fox, William Gaskill, Sir Peter Hall, Sir Derek Jacobi, Bernard Levin, Kenneth Lintott, Alec McCowen, Janet Macklam, John Madden, Joseph Maher, Miriam Margolyes, Patricia Millbourn, John Moffatt, Richard Monette, Gareth Neame, Riggs O’Hara, Anthony Page, Michael Palin, Nicholas Pennell, Stephen Poliakoff, Anthony Powell, Lynn Redgrave, Kate Reid, Sir Peter Shaffer, Ned Sherrin, Shân Smith, Robert Stephens, Christine Stotesbury (née Miller), Judith Stott, Margaret Tyzack, Isabel van Beers and Peter Wood.
I enjoyed correspondence and telephone conversations with John Beary, Sir Michael Caine, Ruth Clarke (née Ayers), Simon Curtis, Robert Fox, Bamber Gascoigne, Jeremy Geidt, Alice Ghostley, Sir John Gielgud, Shirley Halstead (née Jenkins), Sir Nicholas Hytner, Verena Johnston (née Hunt), Lady Olivier and Sir Tom Stoppard. Special thanks are due to Paul Lyon-Maris, Maggie’s agent; Caradoc King, Mildred Yuan and Millie Hoskins at United Agents; Alan Samson, Simon Wright and the team at Orion; and my wife, Sue Hyman.
