Chapter 1

The weather was beautifully warm when the Schmidts finally got back home. The trip from the airport was seemingly short especially since the two had decided to nap all the way home. It seemed the jet lag was a bit too hard on them.

Ahem,” the driver said loudly when they got home. He looked at the couple in the rear view mirror and was not surprised to see that they were still asleep. “Ahem,” he said again, a bit louder this time.

Oh, sorry. We’re just a bit exhausted from the flight, that’s all,” Mitchell said as he gently shook Natasha’s shoulder.

It’s all right, Mr. Schmidt. I understand,” the driver said and got out.

Tasha, we’re home. Wake up,” Mitchell said as Natasha’s eyelids fluttered open.

Already?” she asked as she stretched. Mitchell smiled and opened the door on his side.

I know. We can continue this little nap inside,” he said as they got out of the cab. The driver was walking towards the door carrying the last bag.

Mitchell reached into his pocket and pulled out a hundred dollar bill when he walked back to the car.

Keep the change,” he said as he handed the driver the money. The driver beamed.

Thank you, sir. Very generous of you,” the driver said as he got back in the vehicle. They turned and slowly walked towards the door, both tired and exhausted from the flight.

Wait,” Mitchell said as they approached the door. “I have to do this right,” he said. Natasha looked at him in wonder.

Mitch, what the…whoa,” she said when he took her up in his arms. She looked up at him and smiled. “Oh, so this is what you meant,” she said as he carried her into the house.

Men have been doing this since way before time began. So, welcome home, my wife,” he said before bringing his head down and kissing her. She pulled away and smiled, then looked around the house. She suddenly felt as if this was a different house. Things were not the way she remembered them. She could have sworn that walls had been moved and repainted, and the furniture she remembered was no longer there. In its place were new seats, black in color. There were multicolored throw pillows all over the living room…the same way she would have redecorated.

Mitch…what happened to your house?” she asked as he placed her down. She walked towards the living room and noticed that his frat house table that had beer and tea stains was out and in its place was a black marble top dining table. The new paint and the low hanging chandelier gave the entire room a colonial feel.

That was
my
house. I needed to turn this into
our
house,” Mitchell said as he walked over to her. He put his arms around her waist and kissed her neck. “I made sure everything was made exactly how you would like it,” he added. She turned around and kissed him. “Wait, you haven’t seen anything yet,” he said, pulling away.

Haven’t I seen enough?” she asked. He smiled and shook his head.

Come on,” he said as he took his hand. “You have to see the bedrooms,” he said, leading her through the hallway.

Bedrooms? How many do we have?” Natasha asked with a smile.

Three,” he said. “The other two don’t really matter. The master is what you must see. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time in here,” he said as he opened the door to their bedroom.

What the…” her voice trailed off as she looked around. The bed she had come to know for so long as his had been replaced by a beautiful king size bed. The light brown carpeting was a perfect match to the drapes and wallpaper. She turned around and looked at him. “How did you orchestrate all these without my knowledge?” she asked smiling.

I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. I made all the plans before we left and left the project in the able hands of your good friend Rita,” he said. Natasha giggled at the thought of remodeling the house being called a project. She walked to the bed and sat down. He watched her run her hand over the smooth bedding. “She’s pretty talented if you ask me. Maybe she has more than just art in that hot headed mind of hers,” he said as he walked towards the bed.

Your house was beautiful as it was,” she said looking at him. He shook his head.

I needed it to be our house plus I knew how uncomfortable you were with the fact that I had fraternized with other women in this very house,” he said putting an arm around her shoulders. “I needed to make sure that you would feel at home and not like a guest,” he added as he planted a kiss on her forehead. She smiled.

This has to be the grandest gesture you have ever shown me,” she said. He laughed.

Grandest? What are we now, old English?” he asked with a smile. She shrugged.

Certain gestures call for certain measures of kindness, kind sir,” she said as she let her hair loose and began unbuttoning her blouse.

What are you doing?” he asked, looking at her. “I thought we were tired,” he said. She smiled and stood up to take her pants off. He looked at her standing before him in just her underwear.

We are tired. But before we get into bed, we have to test the shower,” she said as she unhooked her bra. He looked up at her and smiled.

You do know that the head that is tired will not be accountable for the head that demands…entry?” he asked looking at her. She smiled.

If you are going to, quote unquote, demand entry, then I would rather have a shower alone,” she said as she walked towards the bathroom. He took his clothes off in a rush and followed her. He caught her just before he she opened the door.

There are golf clubs in the closet downstairs. If I ever turn down the opportunity to see you naked as water streams down that sexy body, do me a favor and use one of them to beat me to death,” he  said as he opened the door for her.

He smiled when she gasped at the sight of the new bathroom. There was a beautiful steam shower cubicle and a huge cream colored tub a few steps away from the shower.

“I am never leaving this room,” she said as she stepped into the shower.

We don’t ever have to,” he said as he closed the door behind them.

“I just love what you have done with the place,” Stacy said as she took a sip of her wine. “I mean, I just saw it once before but even I can tell that there’s been a drastic change,” she said leaning back.

I know. And people have to pay for this shit. Can you imagine,” Mona asked as she bit into a piece of cheese.

Um, honey, I got paid for this,” Rita said matter of factly.

What? But you’re family,” Mona said with a smile. “I wouldn’t have paid you if you were me,” she said as Natasha walked into the living room carrying a bowl of fruit. The girls had decided to drop by when they heard of the couple’s return.

Don’t get me wrong, Mona. I was willing to do it for free but he seems to really love ripping those leaves off his checkbook,” Rita said.

True that. Mitchell had me send her another check after she declined the first one,” Stacy said. Mona took another piece of cheese.

Why wasn’t I in on this damned party when you got together with Prince Charming in the first place?” Mona asked looking at Natasha.

Don’t look at me, cuz. I invited you over for the longest time. You were always doing something,” Natasha said as she sat down.

Or someone,” Rita added without looking up. The girls looked at each other and laughed. “So anyway, this made me realize that I may be looking at a great career in interior décor,” she said with a smile.

What about your art?” Mona asked. Rita smiled and took a long sip of her wine.

That’s still in the keeps. I am not dropping it,” Rita said. “But interior design looks like something I would want to pursue,” she added. Natasha giggled making Rita give her a stern look. “What?” she asked.

Do you know how many things you have thought of doing?” Natasha asked as she took a seat on the floor.

How many? It’s not like I jump on every good idea or anything,” Rita said looking at Mona. “Right?” she asked. Mona shook her head.

I love you too much not to tell you the truth,” she said. “But every time you do something and it turns out well, you always talk of dropping everything and doing the latest thing,” Mona added.

That’s not true,” Rita said looking at Natasha and then at Stacy. “Is it?” she asked.

Honey, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, isn’t that how you landed on art in the first place?” Natasha said as she placed a reassuring hand on Rita’s knee.

I think you just have to accept that you are multitalented,” Stacy said without looking up.

Guess you are right,” Rita said. Natasha smiled at her.

At this rate we’ll have a Rita events company, Rita arts gallery and Rita interior décor,” Natasha said.

Whitey is right. Just admit you are a woman of many talents,” Mona said. Natasha rolled her eyes.

Stacy, Mona. Her name’s Stacy,” Natasha said sternly. Mona smiled.

You know I don’t mean anything by it, don’t you?” Mona said with a smile. Stacy nodded.

Otherwise I would question the relationship between you and Leo,” Stacy said as she took a sip of her wine. Natasha and Rita smiled at each other. “Even Whitey here noticed,” Stacy joked.

Yeah, how is that going?” Natasha asked with a smile. “It’s been what, a month?” she asked looking at Rita who was now nodding. Mona shrugged.

Nothing serious yet, I hope,” Mona said as she leaned back in her seat. Natasha leaned forward. Her cousin had a look that she knew only too well, a look that only came about when Mona was smitten. Natasha had only ever seen that look twice, once when they were kids and the other time when Mona met her son’s father, right before he screwed her over.

Oh my God,” Rita and Natasha said in unison. Stacy looked at them, confused.

What? What happened?” she asked looking at Rita and Natasha, who were still staring at Mona. “Guys, what?” she pressed.

You see it too, don’t you?” Rita asked. Natasha nodded and took a sip of her wine, still looking at Mona.
