Martin lifted his head, spoon poised in midair. "Violet, I don't tell you how to cook the egg. Please be so kind as to refrain from telling me how to eat it."
Violet rolled her eyes and slumped back in her chair. "He'll be the death of me, I know he will."
Elizabeth laid down her spoon and reached for her tea. "Nonsense, Violet. You two thoroughly enjoy sparring with each other. Think how dull life would be without each other to add excitement to your days."
Violet snorted. "I think there's been more than enough excitement around here lately. I'm glad this nasty business is over and done with. Maybe now we can get back to normal."
"Normal." Elizabeth set her cup back in its saucer. "I don't know what is normal anymore. I have to admit, I rather enjoyed the adventure. I particularly enjoyed the challenge of hunting down clues and working out what they meant. It was all rather invigorating."
"Invigorating, maybe, but very unsuitable behavior for
the lady of the manor." Violet rose from the table. "Your mother would not approve."
Elizabeth sighed. "Maybe not. But I think Daddy might have agreed that the situation had some interesting moments."
"Well, let me tell you, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't have more than our share of interesting moments once them Americans move in tomorrow."
Tomorrow
. Elizabeth's pulse gave a little skip. After today the Manor House would no longer be her peaceful, private domain. Tomorrow the east wing would be occupied by a group of American officers. Tomorrow, she would be living under the same roof as Major Earl Monroe.
Much as she tried to repress the thought, there was no doubt in her mind that she found the prospect every bit as intriguing and exciting as her recent venture into the dark realm of murder.
