‘You want us to see each other again?’ She blinked in confusion. ‘I don’t know if I can.’

He held his breath. ‘Because you don’t want to?’

She shook her head. ‘No. Because whether it’s sooner or later you will leave and it will have to end.’

‘It scares me too, Annabel.’ He addressed the unspoken crux of the matter. ‘The stakes are just as high for me. There are no guarantees in anything in life except that nothing lasts forever – we both know that only too well. Suffering that stroke taught me not to waste a minute, that life’s too precious not to grab at what matters with both hands. You’ve tried to keep yourself safe from hurt, but that’s not the same thing as being happy. I’d rather take the risk and live a little than settle for nothing at all.’

‘Spoken like a gambler.’

He shook his head. ‘Perhaps. But to tell you the truth, I can’t read the play on this one. This is an entirely new game for me.’

‘And for me.’

‘Then we can learn it together,
a mhuirnín
– make up the rules as we go along,’ he urged, trying to keep the hint of desperation out of his voice. He’d already decided that he wasn’t too proud to beg – but only if he absolutely had to.

He watched Annabel close her eyes and let out a big sigh. When she opened them again, he saw both fear and determination warring in the lovely green depths, held his breath to see which one would win.

With a slight raise of her chin she took total command of his heart. ‘Let’s try it and see.’
