“You never cease to amaze me. What was the length of his sentence?” Garrett asked, knowing the silliness of the question before he posed it.

“Indeterminate,” said Lonnie. “Some last a long time. Some not so long at all. Sex between men is rampant in the Turkish prison system. DeMaio, sad to say, went in with the reputation of a child molester.”

“I wonder who told them that?” said Garrett.

“Hard to imagine. I told him where he was going and why. Last thing I said to him before I delivered him, clandestinely, to Turkish sailors from a warship passing through Halifax was that he should try to relax and accept his fate. I told him he’d get used to it.”

Garrett swallowed hard and looked away. When it came to balancing the scales of justice, Lonnie marched to his own drummer. He’d suspected his cousin had arranged a special resolution to the DeMaio problem. It wasn’t something Garrett could openly support given his years as a Mountie, but Lon had a history of dealing with difficult problems in creative ways. To change the uncomfortable subject Lonnie knew was difficult for Garrett, he asked, “Anything new on Alvin?”

Garrett shook his head. “Disappeared like a ghost. DeMaio should have taken lessons from the man.”

“How does Sarah feel about that?”

“Pissed off. He’s the one who got her husband killed, after all. All we can do is keep after him. He’ll make a mistake some day and we’ll pick him up in Saudi Arabia or on some remote island.”

“No extradition treaty with Saudi Arabia,” said Lonnie. “Maybe I’ll look into it.”

Garrett started to say something, then thought better of it. At the far edge of the meadow, a doe appeared, picking her way through the blueberry bushes.

He slid a shingle into place and began to hammer it in.
