Chapter One

I held my two-month-old daughter, Annie, against my chest and stared in shock at my wild-eyed husband as he raced around the bedroom in our small apartment. “I don’t understand what you’re saying?”

Tony tossed an armful of my clothes into the suitcase on the bed without bothering to glance my way. “It’s just for six months.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You want me and Annie to live with Marco Carducci for six months?”

Although I’d met my husband’s boss on three occasions, I certainly didn’t know him well enough to live with him. “Why?”

For the first time since he’d entered the apartment, Tony stopped moving and looked at me. “I’m sorry, babe, I fucked up, and unless you do this for me, Marco’s gonna kill me.”

I lowered myself to sit on the edge of the bed. I’d always known what Tony did for a living, but until that moment, it had never touched me. Tony was a low-level enforcer for the Carducci family, but he’d always taken his orders from Luca, the youngest Carducci brother. As far as I knew, Tony never dealt directly with Marco who was head of the family.

“What did you do?” I asked.

It was a stupid question because it didn’t really matter what Tony had done. The fact was, my own husband was willing to hand over his own family to a fucking mob boss.

Tony dumped the contents of my small underwear drawer into the large suitcase. “I was trying to get us out, El.”

I shook my head. “What did you do?” I asked again.

“I made a deal with Little Nicky. I told him when the next shipment of blow would arrive. The plan was, he’d jack the shipment, sell it, and give me forty percent so we could disappear. That fucker got cold feet though and told Marco what I was planning.”

I brushed the top of Annie’s head with my lips, hoping to soothe myself. I hated to admit it, but my husband was a fuck-up. His latest get-rich-quick-scheme wasn’t the first and like all the others, he’d screwed it up. I’d pleaded with him not to get involved with the Carduccis, begged him to go to work at the garage with his father. Unfortunately, I’d fallen in love with a man who refused to do manual labor. Why he thought he was above making an honest day’s wages, I’d never understand, but there it was. And, here I sat, staring at a man who’d fucked up so bad he was willing to send me and our daughter to another man for six months.

As I continued to watch Tony pack my belongings, the situation began to sink in. “What could a man like Marco Carducci possibly want with me and Annie?”

Tony zipped the suitcase. “You’re kidding, right?” He gestured to me. “Marco’s a boob man. He’s been drooling over your tits for the last two years. Now that he knows you’ve had a kid, he’s even more interested.”

The ache in my heart over Tony’s description of our daughter was soon replaced with fear. Marco was an incredibly handsome man, but he scared me. He was too perfect—too powerful for someone like me. “You want me to have sex with him?”

Tony’s palm landed hard against my face, almost knocking me off the bed. “I can’t believe you! Are you telling me my life isn’t worth it?”

I glanced at Tony’s fists. “No, I’m not saying that,” I quickly said, lowering Annie to the bed. With my daughter out of harm’s way, I lifted my hand to my cheek. I’d put up with Tony’s temper for years, but I’d never been afraid of him until recently. The first time he’d hit me, he’d spent days trying to make it up to me. The second time it had happened, he’d finally agreed to let me go off the pill. I thought of my mom and the years of abuse she’d put up with at the hands of my stepfather.
No.
I wouldn’t turn into her. No fucking way. I knew this might be our only chance to get away from Tony. He needed me to save his ass, so I doubted he’d go further until my time with Marco was up. Maybe Marco would help me get away after my six months were up. “You should stop. I doubt Marco wants a woman covered in bruises.”

Tony grabbed a handful of my dark hair and yanked my head back. “You just make sure you do everything he wants. Mr. Carducci isn’t the kind of man who puts up with shit from women.”

I stared up at Tony and wondered where the romantic boy I’d fallen in love with had gone. “Okay,” I whispered.

* * * *

The moment I stepped into the mansion, a woman came forward and reached for Annie. I immediately turned toward one of the bodyguards in an attempt to shield my daughter from the stranger.

“I’m Maria. Mr. Carducci asked me to help you with Annie while you’re here. I only want to put her in her crib for the night.”

My initial instinct was to tell Maria to go to hell, but before the words could escape my lips, I took a moment to think about it. The middle-aged woman had a soft, kind voice, and I would need every ally I could get in the house. “Will you bring her back to me when she needs to be fed?”

“Of course. I’m only here to help,” Maria replied.

I kissed Annie’s soft, pouty lips before handing her to Maria. “Will she sleep in my room?”

“You will sleep with Mr. Carducci. Annie will stay in the nursery next to my room.” Maria cupped my bruised cheek in her palm. I could see the pain in her eyes as she met my gaze. “I will bring your daughter to you when she needs you. For now, you need to be a bit selfish and heal.”

“I’m fine.” I squared my shoulders. “I know what I need to do.”

“Mr. Carducci won’t be happy when he sees you,” Maria whispered. “You should know he’s a gentle man when others aren’t around.”

I almost laughed but thought better of it. Marco was a lot of things to a lot of people, but I doubted a man who headed a large crime syndicate could ever be described as gentle.

“Mr. Carducci is waiting,” Vince, the larger of the two bodyguards, informed me.

I ran my fingers through my hair in an attempt to cover the swelling bruise with my long dark brown locks. “My suitcases?”

“Already taken care of.” Vince walked toward a set of double doors. He knocked when I reached his side.

“Come in,” a deep voice commanded.

Vince opened the door. “Mrs. Amari’s here.”

I stepped into the home office and scanned the luxurious space until my gaze landed on Marco. Holy moly the man was handsome. His hair was cut short with enough curl to create subtle waves in its ebony and silver depths. I had no idea how old he was, but if I had to guess, I’d say late thirties because even though he had those cute wrinkles around his eyes, his body appeared to be hard and fit.

“Welcome, Ella,” Marco said as he got to his feet. “Please, have a seat.”

I started across the expansive room, praying I wouldn’t fall off the five-inch heels Tony made me wear. The closer I got to Marco’s desk, the harder his handsome features became.

Marco’s eyes narrowed as he stared at my bruised face. “Who?”

I didn’t need him to expand on his question because I knew exactly what he wanted to know. Nope, the bigger question was how to respond. What would a man as powerful as Marco do to a husband who’d hit his wife? Unfortunately, I knew a lie would only get both of us in trouble, and dammit, I’d suffered enough because of Tony’s temper. Still, I couldn’t completely throw the father of my daughter under the bus, so I decided to take partial blame.

“Evidently, I asked my husband too many questions about this arrangement,” I said, squaring my shoulders. It didn’t matter how much Marco intimidated me, I knew better than to show fear in front of the man.

“Vince,” Marco said in a barely raised voice.

The door opened immediately, and Vince appeared. “Yes, sir?”

“I’ll need to speak with Mr. Amari in the morning. Make sure he’s in my office by nine.” Marco didn’t take his gaze off me while he issued the order.

I still couldn’t figure out why a man as handsome as Marco would want someone like me. I’ve always considered myself an attractive woman, but I’ve seen firsthand the kind of women Marco usually dated, and I was far from their league. I remembered what Tony had said earlier and wondered if Marco’s need for me was merely the need for the milk in my breasts.

“Yes, sir,” Vince replied before leaving the office once more.

Marco moved around his desk to stand in front of me. He lifted his right hand and lightly skimmed his fingers down the tender bruise on my cheek. “Unforgivable,” he whispered. “I can assure you, he will be dealt with.”

I could feel Tony’s blood on my hands as the reverent-sounding declaration. I knew it was time I lay my cards on the table before my husband ended up floating in the river. “Thank you, but that’s not necessary. After my time here is up, I hope to get away from him so he’ll never again have the chance to lay a hand on me.”

Marco’s fingers trailed down my cheek to stop at the swell of my breast. “He has damaged something that belongs to me, and I am not as forgiving.” I swallowed as he cupped one of my breasts in his palm. “I will treat you like a princess,” he vowed.

“Why? I’ve seen the beautiful women you attract, and I’m nothing like them.” I couldn’t help asking the question that had been on my mind since Tony first told me about the deal he’d made with Marco.

Marco frowned. “I will be forty-five in a few weeks. Those women you’ve seen me with are only interested in what I can do for them. They don’t care what I need beyond the bedroom, and as I grow older, I find their superficial beauty is no longer enough.” He released my breast and cupped my swollen cheek once more. “Is it so wrong of me to want what another man has?”

Careful not to dislodge his warm touch, I shook my head. “No, it’s not wrong, but you have to know I don’t love you. In the beginning, I loved my husband, and I believe he loved me, too, once, but I’ve learned that my love isn’t enough. If it wasn’t enough for a man like Tony, I have no illusions of what it would mean to a man as powerful and handsome as you.”

“I saw the love you had for him at Giorgio’s wedding two summers ago. I couldn’t take my eyes off you because I’d never seen a woman look at a man like you looked at him.”

I remembered the first time Tony pointed Marco out to me. Although I’d thought Marco was incredibly handsome, I’d been a devoted wife who only desired my husband’s attention. At the time, I hadn’t known who Marco was or that Tony had gone to work for the organized crime boss. It was later that night that Tony informed me of the true nature of his new job, and when I voiced my displeasure, I paid for it.

“That may have been the last time I looked at Tony like that,” I confessed. “He cracked two of my ribs that night.”

Marco hissed his displeasure. “You should have come to me.”

Seriously? The man scared the shit out of me, and he thought I should’ve come to him with my problems? Still, he was staring at me like he was actually waiting for an answer.
Hell.
I decided to be completely honest with him. “I don’t think it would have been a good idea to go to my husband’s scary boss with that information.”

“You find me scary?” Marco asked, pressing his palm against his heart. “You wound me. I will admit that I’m not a nice man when it comes to business, but my business is with your husband, not you.”
