Sniffling, Teodora’s gaze moved to
the blond agent. He was still extending his hand, looking like he was trying to
be reassuring. Hesitantly, she let go of Camila and took a hold of his hand. He
helped her to her feet, giving her a soft smile. She still looked scared, but
stopped sniffling. He directed her around us and out of the room, heading for
the cells.

The head agent’s eyes moved to me.
“Get up. You’re going to get a taste of your own medicine and get locked up in one
of your sick dungeons.”

I sneered at him. “I’ve been imprisoned
in them before, even tortured, so fuck you; this is a walk in the park.” I pushed
up and headed past him.

Camila followed me, taking a hold
of my hand. “Don’t let him get to you.”

I gripped onto her hand, willing
myself to calm down. I wanted to smash the FBI prick’s face in, but knew I
would be the one getting hurt—along with Camila, because without a doubt, she
would fight for me.

I turned towards Mario’s old cells,
unable to stomach being put in the one where the
Padre
had raped and
tortured me. A couple of FBI agents followed me and Camila down the steps. I
spotted Teodora disappearing into the end cell with the blond agent. Camila’s
eyes locked onto the door, her expression worried.

I put an arm around her shoulders.
“She’ll be all right,” I said, liking how protective she’d gotten. The woman
was intensely loyal to the people she cared for, a noble quality I never expected
her to have.

The agent with the buzz cut held a
cell door open for us to enter. The room had belonged to Mario’s woman, which
meant it had some luxuries, such as the linen on the bed. I walked over to it and
sat down, Camila taking a seat next to me. Her expression was strained, her blue
eyes still full of worry.

I took a hold of her hand. “Teodora
will be all right.”

“It’s not her I’m thinking about,
it’s my brother.”

I squeezed her hand. “That agent’s
eyes lit up when he realized he could bring Nino in. He looked like he’d won
the lottery. I’d say he’ll fight for whatever prize your brother will get him:
whether it’s a bonus or a promotion.”

“I pray you’re right,” she breathed
out, “because I couldn’t handle losing him.” She covered her face with her
other hand.

I pulled her hand down. “Don’t
think about it, it’ll just eat you up. All you need to think about is he’s alive
and the FBI’s working to keep it that way.”

She blinked, looking like she was
forcing herself not to cry. I cocked my head sideways, giving her a kiss on her
lips to distract her. She raised her hand hesitantly, then placed it on the
back of my head and returned my kiss passionately.

A Russian voice started yelling, causing
me to pull away. I pushed up and went for the door, banging on it. “What are
you doing to Sasha?!” I shouted. They ignored me. I banged harder, yelling, “Don’t
hurt him!”

The door’s window slid open. The
FBI agent with the buzz cut looked in on me. “He’s not being cooperative, so he’s
being carried to a cell.”

“Be careful with him, he’s been
brutalized.”

“You should’ve thought about that
before you did it, then.”

“I didn’t hurt him! The Donatelli
did. I was helping him recover.”

“I don’t really care.” The agent closed
the viewing window. A few seconds later, Sasha’s yells stopped.

I walked over to the bed and kicked
off my shoes, climbing around Camila to lie down. She kicked off her shoes too and
lay down next to me, her face parallel with mine. “What do you think will
happen?” she asked.

“They’ll eventually set you free,
possibly Teodora too, as long as she’s not involved in Rita’s case.”

“What about you?”

“They’ll take me back to America.”

“I’ll find a way to keep you here.”

“Don’t worry; I’ll be back in no
time. Despite what that
stronzo
said, they won’t be able to make
anything stick. I’ve experienced something similar and got off.”

She placed her hand on mine. “Regardless,
if things do go wrong, my
famiglia
have FBI connections. Matteo wasn’t
the only plant.”

“Who are your connections?”

“Apart from the Spinelli, my nephew
Carmine.”

“Another of Marco’s sons?”

“No, he’s one of Nino’s.”

“How can Nino have a kid old enough
to work in the FBI, he’s only forty?”

“He got Carmine’s mother pregnant
when he was fourteen, which makes his son only a year younger than Matteo. Carmine’s
a thousand times nobler than that
stronzo
too. If anything, I don’t
understand why Christo prefers Matteo over Carmine. He would make a great Don.
He’s a good man, very respectful. But maybe that’s why: he’s good, unlike
Christo and Matteo. Anyway, he’ll help you if I ask him to.”

Grazie
for the offer, but
I’m sure I’ll be fine, though thank Christ Frano sold those slaves in time.”

, that was fortunate.”

“I just hope the Landi disposed of
Honey properly.”

Her face dropped.

“Oh,
merda
, I’m sorry, I
shouldn’t have mentioned her.”

She shook her head. “I don’t
deserve any consideration. If anything, I deserve to be locked away for the
rest of my life for what I did to her.”

“If she was still alive, they
would’ve had something on me, so you saved my neck.”

She didn’t respond, her expression still
troubled.

“Look, she’s gone; you can’t do
anything about it. Plus, it was an accident, so stop beating yourself up over
it.”

“It wasn’t an accident,” she
gritted out, “I murdered her.”

“Okay, maybe
accident
was
the wrong word to use, but I still consider what you did as self-defense, like
what I did with the soldiers.”

“That’s not the same; Honey didn’t
try to kill me.”

“She could’ve gotten you killed if
she talked, and with the way she was obsessing over me, I’d say she would’ve. She
would’ve viewed you as competition, one that needed to be eliminated. And if
she was still alive, I would either be going to jail for a very long time, or
I’d still be upstairs drugged and controlled by her.”

Camila nodded, although she still
looked upset.

“At least you feel guilt,” I said.
“I felt nothing killing those soldiers or the sleazy
cazzo
at the House
at Whores. I would also feel nothing if I killed those FBI agents. It just
shows you’re more human than me.”

She pulled a face. “Human? That
sounds ridiculous.”

“No, it’s true. My humanity has literally
been fucked right out of me. Because of it, my thoughts and feelings aren’t
right. I feel at the wrong times, and often too much, while other times I don’t
feel at all. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I don’t think anything about
me does. Sometimes I feel like I’m disconnected from my body, looking down upon
myself. Often, I don’t know what’s real and what isn’t, as though I’m dreaming.
Then someone tells me I did something and I realize it wasn’t a dream. It’s
been getting worse lately.”

She frowned. “Like in the gym?”

“I think that was brought on by the
drugs Honey slipped into my food, but it’s basically like that.”

“You’ve suffered a lot of trauma.
That could’ve caused it.”

“Probably. I used to imagine I wasn’t
in my body when your uncle used to...” I stopped, not wanting to say it. “He
dehumanized me, treating me as though I was just a thing; that I was only there
for his pleasure.” I cleared my throat. “The others weren’t much different.
They said they loved me, but it was more to do with how I looked than what’s in
here,” I tapped my head, “or what’s in here,” I tapped my heart.

She placed a hand over my heart. “I
love you for what’s in here.”

I frowned. “You love me?”

“I meant care,” she said, looking flustered.
“And I’m with you because of your personality, not looks. All my life I’ve been
surrounded by good-looking people, so appearance isn’t everything to me,
otherwise I’d be married by now. Of course, I wouldn’t be with an ugly person,”
she smiled, “but that goes the same for people with ugly personalities. I
thought you had an ugly personality at first, then I realized I’d misread you after
you took care of Ghita,” she breathed out. “You also comforted me when I was
down as well as risked your life for me.” She tapped my chest. “You still have
goodness in there, and I want to see more of it.”

I stared at her, not knowing what
to say to that.

She brushed my hair back. “I see
the real you, flaws and all.”

“I have a lot of them,” I answered,
staring into her blue eyes. They were so similar in color to the
Padre
’s,
but unlike his eyes, hers made me feel safe. I still couldn’t believe how I’d
gone from threatening her to feeling safe in her arms. It made me wonder whether
I had finally found someone I could share my life with. I didn’t love her, but
maybe I could if she stuck around long enough.

“Why are you smiling?” she asked.

“I like you, and want to see if
this thing we have could possibly lead into something more.”

A smile lit up her face. “I’d like
that too.”

“I hope you still think that after
I go off the deep end.”

“I’ve already experienced that and
it hasn’t changed my mind. It’s because I like you a lot.”

“Will you still like me when I’m
being a
stronzo
, because I guarantee you, I will be one.”

, and will
you
still like me when I’m being a
troia
?”

“You are a
troia
, so yeah.”

She smacked my arm. “
Stronzo
!”

I smiled. “Do you still like me?”

She made a derisive sound. “You’re
just playing with me.”

I laughed. “No, you’re a
troia
,
but I like you as you are.” I yanked her closer to me, realizing a second later
that I probably shouldn’t have done it, her trauma with the soldier still fresh.
But she didn’t pull away; instead she placed an arm over me.

“I think I might fall in love with
you,” she said.

“Not in the near future, love takes
time.”

“I didn’t give you a time period; it’ll
come when it’s ready.” She ran her fingers down my cheek. “You are so beautiful,
both
inside and out.”

“Not inside.”

“Beauty is in the eye of the
beholder, so you can’t tell me I’m wrong.” She leaned forward to give me a kiss.
“You even taste beautiful,” she mumbled against my lips.

My hand moved down her body, the
woman arousing me. “Don’t tempt me, Camila, you’ve been hurt.”

“You have too.” She rubbed her nose
against mine. “Which is probably why I feel safe with you.”

“You pulled away from me in my
bedroom.”

“You took me by surprise when you
grabbed me. I’m not ready for that. It’ll be better if I take control.”

“Everyone likes to control me.”

“But I would stop if you asked me
to.” She moved even closer, pressing her body hard up against mine. “And if
you’re going to America, I need to feel you now, to make the most of our time together.”

“You’re making it sound like I’m
not coming back.”

She kissed my cheek. “I can’t
predict anything with you, so let me have this.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Lie on your back.”

I rolled onto it.

“Now, arch your back.”

As I did it, she slipped my shirt
off, then unzipped my pants.

“Lift your
culo
,” she said.

“Someone could walk in.”

“Lift your
culo
,” she
repeated.

I did. She removed my pants and underwear,
leaving me completely naked. She dropped them on the floor, then leaned over
and kissed me on the lips. Wanting to make the kiss deeper, I moved my hand behind
her head.

“No touching,” she said, grabbing
my hand. She clamped it down on the bed and lowered her mouth towards one of my
eyes, making me close both. She kissed my eyelids, then my nose and lips,
moving down to my neck. I opened my eyes, watching her flick one of my nipples
with her tongue. She did the same to the other one, then peppered more kisses
down my stomach, stopping right above my hardening cock. She kissed its head,
then ran her tongue up my cock, slipping it into her mouth. I raised my hands, intending
on placing them on her head. She glanced up at me, making me lower them. Returning
her attention to my cock, she started to blow me, her warm, moist mouth making
me groan. One of her hands ran up my body, feeling my chest as she sucked on my
shaft. I groaned louder as her other hand cupped my balls. I wanted to grab her
head and hold her in place, but instead I took a hold of the bedrails, knowing
I had to play by her rules.
