‘I'll get that—'

Dr Drake went to snatch it up but Jess got there first.

She stared down at the twisted fragment of paper in her hand. It was a little more tattered than it had been, but it was unmistakably the spring of paper mistletoe that Daisy had put up in the ward at Christmas. The one Dr Drake had later taken down in a fit of embarrassed pique.

Had he really kept it all this time? Jess wondered.

‘I don't know how that got there,' he said, blushing furiously. But at the same time, Jess caught the slightest hint of a shy smile on his lips.

He'll take care of you
, Sam had said in her dream. She looked down at the paper mistletoe in her hand. It was going to be slow going, she thought. But perhaps, by next Christmas, they would be ready to put it to good use.
