“I understand your hesitation, but this is my wife, and I wish to surprise her.”  The man shook his head ‘no’ and regretfully walked away.  Griffin wasn’t discouraged.  He knew that Victoria was staying here, so he would simply take a seat and wait until she made an appearance.

“What am I going to do with you, Victoria?” Xavier demanded.

“You’d better run and pray that Griffin doesn’t find you, you bastard!”  She tugged at the ropes binding her to the chair, and cursing her own stupidity in getting caught.  Xavier’s security system was top notch and he knew she was coming when she was still down the road a ways.  He easily came up behind her when she was focused on entering the house without his hearing her.  Now she was trussed to a wooden chair and she wouldn’t get

any time soon without the aid of a sharp knife, and Xavier had made sure to confiscate her knife and all of her other tools of the trade.  To make matters worse, the darn nausea was making her very uncomfortable again.

“I told him to back off.”

“He wasn’t looking for you.”

“Yes he was, Victoria.  Maybe not in front of you, but he was looking.  I am not going to keep moving for the rest of my life.”

“If you harm me, you won’t have a ‘rest of your life’ to worry about,” Victoria told him.  “Touch me and Griff will hunt for you until one of you is dead; you know it, too.”

“How did you find me here?” he demanded.

She just glared at him, then went deathly pale a few seconds later.  “Untie me; I’m going to be ill.”

“You don’t expect me to fall for that one, do you, Victoria?” he scoffed, and she rewarded him by throwing up all over his pristine marble floor.  “What is wrong with you?” he demanded once she stopped retching.

“I hope it’s the plague and I infected you!”

“I really do hate you, Victoria.  You ruined Griff.”

“I hate you, too, Xavier.  You betrayed Griffin’s trust, and Ian’s.  How could you do that?”

“Ten million dollars.”  He sighed, and then said, “You are going to have to have an accident, Victoria.  A fatal one, of course.”  He systematically cleaned up the mess she’d made from the floor and then sprayed the room.  “I have plans to make; don’t go anywhere, Victoria.”  He laughed at his own joke, and then left the house, locking the door behind him.

Victoria tried to free her hands, but he’d tied the ropes so tight that she couldn’t even find any wiggle room for her wrists.  She gave some thought to tipping the chair over and hoping it would break apart, but it was solidly built, and it would be her luck to bruise herself or break a bone and then lie there in excruciating pain until he returned to murder her.  Of all the times to get sick!  Suddenly, Victoria realized that she wasn’t really ill… She was pregnant!  Her eyes went wide as her mind acknowledged what her heart already knew.  All the signs were there, and quite obvious, and she would have realized the truth sooner if she hadn’t been so involved in her characters’ lives!  Victoria had to do something to get herself… and her baby… out of this mess.  For the first time she wished that her husband was on his way.  She was in over her head and needed rescuing.

Xavier accepted death calmly.  He’d been so busy planning an accident for Victoria that he’d failed to notice the man with hate-filled eyes until the knife slid between his ribs.  Victoria would hate not being the one to end his life!  He closed his eyes and smiled as he knew he would ultimately have the last laugh when she learned that she was his one and only beneficiary!  Victoria had all that money, and she would forever know it came from General Weatherby… and from him!

The policeman grabbed the man before he left the alley, and held him while others stepped into the alley to see if they recognized the man lying there.  The commotion drew Ian’s attention, and once he saw that Xavier was indeed dead, he hurried back to the hotel where Griffin was still waiting for his wife to return.  “Griff, Xavier is dead.  The police have the man who did it in custody.  I didn’t recognize him, and he wasn’t talking.  Based on where Xavier was found, he was hiring someone to do something illegal.

“Do you think he knew Victoria is here?” Griff’s heart pounded with fear.

“Sir? Are you an American?” the lady asked in a timid voice.

“Yes,” Ian replied.

“Are you here with the lady who writes mysteries?” she asked hopefully.

“I’m her husband,” Griff said, smiling in the hope he would put her at ease and learn something of Victoria’s whereabouts.

“Oh, wonderful!  I wanted to caution her that the man who bought the chocolates from me seemed very nervous.  I thought perhaps she shouldn’t go and see him by herself…?  Is she back now?”

“Not yet, and I would like to go and walk her back here.”  Griffin soon had an address from her, and directions from the desk clerk.  They literally ran to get to the home that Xavier rented, and Ian had to stop Griff from breaking down the door and rushing inside.

“What if the door is rigged, my friend?  Use your head!”

Griffin nodded, and waited patiently until Ian said it was safe to walk inside.  Once there, they quickly found Victoria and freed her.  After hugging her and making sure she was truly safe and well, Griffin sat down on the wooden chair and pulled her over his lap and started whacking her behind.  Ian walked over to the kitchen counter and found a wooden spoon, and then handed it to Griffin.  Griff thanked him politely, and set out to scorch his wife’s pretty bottom.

“It was mean of you to book the flight home so soon, Griffin!” Victoria complained as she squirmed on the first class seat.  They were only an hour into their flight, and she was truly miserable.  Her aggravated husband had done a thorough job of spanking her after rescuing her.

“You deserved that spanking, Mrs. Conway,” he announced, and didn’t bother to lower his voice, either.  Ian grinned at them from across the aisle, and Victoria was embarrassed if the blush on her cheeks was an indication.

“I can’t argue that point,” she shocked him by admitting.  “But, we could have stayed in Paris for a week or two to let that spanking cool down a bit!”

“Ian and I have to get back and get to work, and, young lady, you have a deadline… Have you forgotten?” he asked, tapping the end of her nose with his forefinger.

Victoria didn’t answer that, but said, “I’m so glad that Ian is now your partner, Griff.  It feels right.”

“I agree.”  He watched the color drain from her face and hurried to reach for an airsick bag for her to be sick in.  “You are going to the doctor when we get home.  I’m going to call Dr. Kramer myself and take you in to see him!”  He helped her, and the flight attendant brought her water to rinse her mouth.  “Yes, you are going to see Dr. Kramer, and that is final!”

“No, darling,” she argued.  “Not Dr. Kramer… Dr. Sims,” she corrected, and waited to see when he would realize what she was trying to tell him.  Griffin wasn’t slow; she had to give him that!

“You’re pregnant?” Griffin whispered, afraid to get too excited.

“I am,” she admitted, smiling.  He pulled her close and kissed her and told her he loved her, and then announced to the entire plane that he was going to be a father!

Once the shock of the news wore off, Griffin demanded, “Did you know this before you went after Xavier, Mrs. Conway?”

Victoria was happy when she could truthfully tell him she had no idea.  She hated to think of the spanking that would have earned her right there in first class!  “I love you, darling.”  He took her hand in his and promised he would never let her go.  Of all the luck, theirs was the very best.
