Epilogue

Six weeks later…

Cara surveyed the huge Christmas tree in her living room. This was the first time the tree had been decorated in three years. She had previously been content with the smaller one set up in her mother’s room. But her relationship with Austin Harmon had continued to deepen, and it had been his suggestion to put up the tree.

Cody was behind bars, serving a ten-year sentence for assault, check forgery, and theft. Doreen and Rosalie’s injuries had healed, although Rosalie’s health continued to deteriorate. Austin had all but moved in with Cara, and Rosalie seemed to enjoy his company as he took turns reading to her and playing cards.

“Everything okay, sweetheart?” Austin’s voice cut into her reverie. Cara turned as he handed her a glass of red wine.

“I thought you were at Harmony House. When did you get back?” She kissed him and took a sip of the fruity liquid.

“You were singing along with Bing and messing with the tinsel.” Austin slipped his arm around her waist. “Everything is running smoothly. Grant said to say thank you for whatever you told Marjorie.”

“Good.” Cara sipped her wine. “She had a panic attack when the DJ couldn’t find the song she’d requested for the first dance. All I did was suggest an alternative, and told her she had plenty of time to figure out which song was “theirs.” And speaking of songs…” She pulled away and walked over to the stereo. With the push of a button, the opening strains of “The Reason” began. “Remember this?” She turned to face him.

Austin smiled and placed his wineglass on the coffee table. “Our song. May I have this dance?”

“You may.” Cara set down her own glass and moved into his arms. “I love you, Austin.”

“And I love you,” he whispered as his mouth claimed hers.
