How is Emilie alive?” I asked
horrified.

Emilie stays alive the usual
way dark Queens stay alive by switching bodies. She anchors her
soul into a new body every so often thus making her
immortal.”

Why am I only figuring this out
now? Why didn’t I remember any of this sooner? Why now?”

We tried to help you see.
Erzulie was gracious enough to bless you and you were re-born into
a line of very powerful Queens, but your own fear crippled you. And
the fact that your dear sweet Edmond is still determined to claim
your soul didn’t motivate you to remember either. We finally had to
send Marie to slap you and bring you to me and Papa Legba so you
could reconnect with the part of your soul you were burying. This
part of you was too traumatized to return to the mortal
realm.”

Chills ran up my spine. “Is Edmond still
alive?”

He nodded
. “Emilie keeps him alive
because he’s her perfect weapon against you. He’s protected by her
power. Emilie knew that you’d return one day. She’s been preparing
for a long time. Since Lucus never died, Edmond wasn’t able to bind
his soul to yours but that doesn’t mean he’s given up. It’s all a
game to them. Death and destruction are mere games! ”

I shuddered at the whole situation. “Do
you think Lucus and Louis will ever forgive me for what I’ve done?”
I asked, as I took a big slurp of white rum. “Do you think Lucus
recognized me even in this body?”

Ghede Nibo smiled that brilliant smile of
his. “What do you think?”

I wasn’t sure but I refused to live in
fear any longer. “Why did the spirits help me?” I asked
humbly.

People need to be free,” he
said, as he twirled me around and around. “People need spirit!
Spirit cannot and should not be oppressed!”

What happens if I don’t defeat
her?”

He shrugged and took the rum bottle
from my hand. “It’s a mystery.”

Those were not comforting words but I
refused to be discouraged by them. I reached out and grabbed
Cecile’s hand. “Thank you.” I gave Ghede Nibo a soft kiss on the
cheek.

He smiled and clapped his
hands.

My eyes closed and I drifted far far
away.

My pathetic, weak sister has
returned to dethrone me, has she?”

Welcome back sweet,
Cecile. I’ve missed you dearly.”
