Adrienne
I
checked my voice mail and my mom was on there asking when was Asia coming to visit her. I love my mom, but the minute I sent Asia to visit she would be a loving grandmom for one week and then she would start calling and harassing me and telling me she has had enough and that it was time to come pick Asia up. Even though I knew how our conversation would go, I still had to be a good daughter and return her call. My mother was fifty and white, but she still raised me as a proud black woman. I never really knew my dad's black family. They didn't accept me or my mother. And after my grandparents died, it was only me and her. I think she calls so much now because she is all alone, but she would never admit it. She has a boyfriend, but I know she wishes Asia and I were with her in Philly.
“Hey, Mom.”
“Where's my baby, Adrienne?” She scowled from the other end of the phone. I could imagine her white skin tone turning red.
“She is with her father,” I answered, preparing to hear why those people shouldn't be around her precious grandchild.
“I don't like Asia with them country people, Adrienne. His mother feeds her entirely too much, and they send her back home looking like a street walker with tight clothes and her stomach hanging out.”
“Mom, when she gets back, let me have some time with her, and then if you really want her, you can come down here and pick her up.”
“Adrienne, you can't drive her up here?”
“No, I'm not driving to Philly. I can buy you a plane ticket and you can come and pick her up.”
“Adrienne, you act as if it's a bus ride.”
“Mom, it only takes two hours. How else were you going to get her? Think about it and call me back.” If I knew my mom, she would be down here by next week to come and get her only grandchild.
After debating with my mom, I opened my closet to try to find something to wear because my girl Angelique was coming in town and we were going to hang out. Every time she is around it's a paaaarty, and Miami has the best nightlife. We were going to party on another level.
Angelique was my girl. I met her at a Sixers basketball game back home years ago. She told me and my friend Tanisha about a party after the game. We went, and it was filled with wall-to-wall six-foot-something, rich, gorgeous men. I was in love with them all. We had a great time, and from then on she and I started hanging out together.
Angelique kept a baller on her team, literally. Since I've known her, she's always dated someone who has taken care of her. And I'm not talking about someone paying rent or buying an expensive purse. Angelique had her men buying her property and paying in full for her luxury vehicles. She lived a big, fabulous lifestyle without a job, and at the time I wanted that for myself, too! She led me to the dating-an-athlete path, and once I was on it, I navigated it for myself.
Hours later I knew what I was going to wear to the club, but I hadn't exactly told Ian I was going out. It wasn't like I had to ask for permission, but I did like to give a heads-up. Unfortunately, it was too late. Angelique arrived before I had an opportunity to tell Ian about our plans. I opened the door, and she sashayed into my condo. We hugged quickly and as soon as we separated I complimented her on her stylish, oversized Hermès bag.
“Oh, thank you. It is old.”
“No, it is not. I think I was going to get it maybe a few months ago. I wanted to buy it, but I had to tell myself,
don't play yourself
.”
“Thank you. It was a gift from my boo. He likes to spoil me.”
“All your men spoil you, girl.”
“You're right, and if they didn't, they wouldn't be around.” Angelique's appearance screamed high maintenance, and most men would be intimidated. Her arms, feet, and wrists were adorned by a year of college tuition, by way of her bag, shoes, and watch. She took her wide-frame sunglasses off and revealed her modelesque features. She immediately started giving herself an unauthorized tour of the condo.
“I like this place,” she said, looking around, touching and feeling the textures of my furniture and walls.
“Thanks. I like it, too. It has a balcony and three bedrooms. And I still have my place in Philly.”
“Yeah, it is nice. A little small, but nice. It has a lot of potential.” She continued walking around so fast that she opened the door to Ian's office before I could tell her not to go in there. He turned around in his chair, very annoyed at us disturbing him. She closed it back fast, then started laughing. She made a face at the door and whispered, “My bad.” I opened the door back up and introduced them. Ian came out, pushing his glasses up on his face. He said hello and Angelique gave him a nonchalant “hey.” Then she went and flopped on the sofa, and Ian went back into his office, slamming the door behind him.
“Is he mad? Tell him I'm sorry.”
“He'll be okay. He is in the process of editing and lost some valuable footage, so I'm trying not to bother him. He becomes very testy when it comes to his work. Plus, I didn't even get a chance to tell him you were coming or that we were going out.”
“Oh, okay. So what are you wearing tonight?”
“I'm not sure. I think this little black dress I have.”
“I'm sure it will look cute. Your legs are really toned. What are you doing?”
“That's from running in the sand every morning.”
“Really? Ugh, I hate exercise. I hate sweating. I'd rather just starve. So, while I'm in town, I'm visiting with you today, and then tomorrow I'm going to see my other friend in Orlando.”
“You're doing a little tour of Florida, huh?”
“Yeah, so let's go out tonight and have fun, and tomorrow before I leave I want to check out Bal Harbor.”
“Shopping? I need to stay out of the mall. I've been spending so much money. Let me show you these shoes I just bought.” I was walking toward the bedroom when Ian asked me to come into his office.
“Are you going out tonight?” he asked me. He was already frowning before I even gave him an answer. I could only assume he had been ear hustling on our conversation.
“I don't know. We may hit a few places. Why?”
“I don't know. Your friend seems like a real gold digger. What does she do?” Ian had read her correctly, but I had to convince him he hadn't.
“Um, she is a Realtor.” I was somewhat lying. She had once taken a real estate course, but she quickly dropped it when her next sponsor came along. But Ian didn't know any of that.
“She is carrying a ten thousand-dollar bag. Business must be good.”
“Why are you so concerned with her bag? Come on, Ian.” The only reason he knew how much the bag cost was because I wanted one and he had convinced me not to buy it.
“She looks like a user with no ambitions. I hate chicks like that, who only judge a man by his wallet. And I don't like my lady being in that kind of company.”
“How did you get all of that just from her busting into your office?”
I looked over at Ian. He was being petty and acting like a woman. That was the part of him I hated. At times I think he was afraid I might drop him for another athlete with money, but if he makes it at this film thing, he'll be just as rich. And he'll be making movies until his eighties, whereas most basketball players are broke three years after retiring. I always tell him this, but I don't think he believes me, and it doesn't do much to help his insecurities.
So, before I met Angelique at her hotel for our girl's night, I had to comfort an unconfident man by inviting him out with us. I probably shouldn't have looked so nice while I was doing it. I was dressed to the nines in a black and pink dress and matching YSL pumps. My hair and makeup were both gorge, and I knew it was going to be torture for him to let me walk out the door without him. I peeked in his office and said, “So, I think we are going to The 400 Club, Fountain Bleu, or maybe Saga if you want to meet us or just call me.” Without looking up, Ian told me to have fun and that he wasn't going.
“Are you sure? Well, if you change your mind, just text me.”
“I doubt it.”
I didn't want him to go anyway. He could keep his grouchy ass in the house. I could see it was going to be hard meshing my old friends with my new man.
I picked up my keys and walked out of my place. I had just reached the elevator of my building when my conscience started kicking in. I wanted to go out and not care about how Ian felt, but I knew I had to take care of my man before I left. I went back to my condo, slid off my dress, walked back in his office, and then sat on Ian's lap. It took all of two minutes of sitting my almost naked body on Ian's lap, grinding on him, before he was thrusting toward me in a desperate way, trying to cease the foreplay. He wanted his thickening body inside mine, but I wouldn't allow it to happen just yet. I unzipped his pants and stuck the tip of him inside of my sultry, slippery walls, only allowing only the head of him pleasure. After a few moments of making him wait, I whispered in his ear, “You ready to get in all the way?”
“I'm ready,” he moaned, trying to push farther inside me.
“Be patient,” I said, teasing him. I then slid slowly down, maneuvering my hips like a slow, melodic belly dancer. Ian inhaled deeply, and his eyes were rolling back as he savored the warmth of my tender, juicy insides. I took control and tugged on his dreads. I slid my body up and down on him until right before I knew he couldn't take it anymore. He picked me up and carried me to our bedroom. He then slammed me onto our bed and forcefully entered my body again. After five minutes of thumping inside of me, he screamed, “Oh Adrienne. Shit . . .” And then he violently climaxed and fell to the other side of the bed.
Ian couldn't stay mad at me after what I'd just given him. He was quiet and hopefully not as angry that I was going out. I showered again, slipped my dress back on, and told him I wouldn't stay out that late and that I would see him later. This time he walked me to my car and even said he might join us.
Refreshed and feeling sexy, I pulled up in front of Saga and let the valet take my keys. He parked my car next to a fleet of imported luxury vehicles: Bentleys, Lamborghinis, and Aston Martins. The club regulars filed into the club, and Angelique and I were escorted to a table in the VIP section. Saga was more of a lounge where you could dance in one area or just sit and talk and have dinner in another. The club was just off the beach, and the breeze from the ocean caressed us as we sat and caught up.
Our pretty server promptly came over to us. She spoke with a Spanish accent and asked us what we were having to drink. I looked down at the menu and then over to Angelique.
“Do you want to order a bottle or just a round of drinks?” I asked her.
“We can start off with a few rounds of martinis, but let's also order a bottle.” Angelique pulled out her credit card, but I let her know I had it. I handed the girl my credit card.
“Are you sure?” Angelique questioned me.
“Yes, you're visiting. You can pay when I come to visit you. Where are you at now?”
“I'm in Milwaukee.”
“Well, I'm never coming there, but next time I have this.” I laughed.

While waiting for our drinks, we began to people watch. Angelique spotted people she knew and she waved a few times.
“So your new boyfriend, he is a different choice for you. He looks like the natural type. He was really mad when I opened that door. I was like, oh I'm sorry.”
I couldn't help but laugh because she was on point. I said, “This time around I needed a man who could teach me something and be there for me. He is such a sweet man. So, where are your two girls, Shavone and Nytika?”
“Those two are in the past. I had to drop both of them. Nytika still wants to party every weekend, and I tried to tell her you can't go that hard forever. If you do, you run out of new people to play the game with. I could not have all that mess around me any longer. It's time to have babies, be in the carpool line at the school, and park the Ranger in front of the mansion. You know what I'm saying. Not party nonstop. Plus, my boy don't know anything about anything, and I don't want one of his teammates to see Shavone and say, oh that's the girl such and such used to get with it. Um, no. Can you imagine all the people she slept with?”
“I can. DeCarious came to me once asking me did I know this guy and that guy, and I had a straight face like, um, no, I have no idea what you are talking about.” We laughed some more, then our server placed our drinks in front of us and we indulged in the perfectly made martinis and continued our conversation.
“So, who is your new man? Where did you meet him? ” I asked.
“His name is Ronell Jones. He is the sixth man on the Milwaukee Bucks and he is putting up numbers. Look at his picture.” She pulled up his picture on her phone.
“Oh, he looks real young, Angelique.”
“I have nine years on him. He is only twenty one, but he does everything like a grown man. And his pockets are very mature.” She laughed.
“Obviously, look at that ring.” The oversized diamond was sparkling and weighing her hand down.
“Oh, this thing?” she said, giggling. “No, it was really fate meeting him. I caught him straight out of the locker room, literally. His team was playing the Knicks. I saw him and didn't let him out of my sight. We exchanged numbers, then we talked on the phone and was on Twitter for a few weeks. Then he flew me out and I've been with him ever since. I had to settle down with somebody. I was so tired of doing the city-to-city thing. He is from this small town in Indiana and is so clueless about this life.” She laughed, pointing around the club. “He tells me all of his business, and gets my opinion on everything. My name is even on some of his bank accounts. I tell him what to do, what to wear, and he listens. I'm so in, his parents even love me. It's like I'm his best friend, big sister, girlfriend.”
