, Jayne,” Bill mumbled into his pillow. “It’s three in the morning.”

“London time,” she said, listening to the answering machine on the other end of the phone. “It’s only about ten in New York.”

“Do you have to—?”

She shushed him.

Larkin’s voice crackled through the long-distance connection. “Leave your name, number and brief message, and I’ll try to get back to you. Thanks.”

Beep. “It’s your mother, Larkin. I just wanted to say congratulations. Call me collect at your brother’s house tomorrow and give me all the details. Our love to Alex. Cheerio!”

Bill raised his head off the pillow and stared at his wife. “What was that all about? You just saw her yesterday.” He covered his mouth and yawned. “ESP again or jet lag?”

“Call it a mother’s intuition.”

“I call it spooky.” He lay down and motioned to his wife. “I hope Larkin knows what you’re talking about when she gets the message.”

Jayne curled up against her husband and kissed him “She’ll know,” she said, smiling into the darkness. “She’ll know.”
