“I love you.”
Christopher’s arm tightened around her. Alabama could feel the muscles in his bicep twitch on her back. It was the first time she’d said it outright to him since the day she’d been arrested.
“Sweet,” his voice was tortured. “I don’t deserve you. You’re way too good for me, but I can’t let you go. I won’t.”
“You don’t have to, Christopher. I’m yours for as long as you want me.”
He rolled toward her until she was on her back looking up into his eyes. They were intense. “I’ll always want you. You’re mine.”
His head dipped and for the second time that night he kissed her with all the dominance he’d been holding back for the last few weeks.
Alabama’s hands went to his head and clenched his hair as he ravaged her mouth. Finally he pulled back, just enough to look into her eyes.
“Don’t worry about tomorrow, sweet. Trust me to take care of it, of you.”
Alabama couldn’t believe he’d stopped. She was ready for him to make love to her again. “I know you will…now shut up and kiss me.”
She loved seeing the smile creep over his face.
“Whatever you want. Whatever you want.”
Caroline and Alabama sat on the couch and tried to pay attention to the movie that was playing. Neither was doing a very good job of it. Finally Caroline shut off the television.
“When were they supposed to land again?” Alabama was more than ready to see Christopher again.
The team had been called out on a mission to Mexico. They weren’t able to tell them where exactly they were going or what they were doing, but both Caroline and Alabama knew whatever it was, it was dangerous.
Each mission had been easier and easier for Alabama to take, but she knew it’d never be
easy
. Every time Christopher walked out of the house, whether it was for a mission or for a simple trip to the grocery store, she worried.
Christopher had been steadfast in his support of her. He’d taken care of the “misunderstanding” the night they’d gotten back together. The police officers had even apologized for bothering her that night. Alabama knew Christopher was behind that, but he’d never admitted it.
Alabama had quit the cleaning job she’d had, with Christopher’s urging and support, and decided to go back to school. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, but for now she was talking general education classes. She had time to decide later. She hadn’t wanted to not work, but Christopher had convinced her after one long night in bed, that she’d be better off concentrating solely on her studies.
She’d gotten closer to his friends and teammates, and she worried almost as much about them as she did about Christopher, almost.
Caroline watched as Alabama paced. Caroline missed Matthew just as much as Alabama missed Christopher, but she’d been with him longer, so she’d had more experience in the agony of waiting for him to return from a mission.
“They’ll be home as soon as they can, Alabama.”
“I know, I just miss him.”
Finally after another hour passed, the women heard a truck in the driveway. They both raced to the front door and out into the yard.
Alabama had eyes only for Christopher. He met her in front of the truck and held her to him in a hard, possessive embrace. As usual, she burst into tears.
“Jesus, sweet. I’m fine. Wolf’s fine. Everyone’s fine.”
“I know,” Alabama said between sniffs, “I’m just so happy you’re home. I missed you!”
Christopher picked her up, carrying her toward the door. Every time they came home from a mission Matthew invited them to stay in her old basement bedroom. They’d always agreed because driving to their townhouse seemed as if it would just take too long.
“I missed you too, sweet.”
Alabama inhaled Christopher’s scent as he carried her into the house. She didn’t bother to look up at Caroline and Matthew; she knew they’d be doing the same thing she was.
As Christopher carried her down the basement stairs she quickly asked, knowing if she didn’t, she’d be way too preoccupied to ask for the next few hours. “Everyone okay?”
Abe loved how she was always concerned for his teammates. They were like brothers to him and it showed just how sweet Alabama was that she always asked. “Yeah, everyone’s okay. We got the girls out, they’re gonna be okay.”
“Girls?”
“Well, women. I’m not supposed to talk about it, but in nutshell this woman had been kidnapped a few days ago. We went in and found her easily, but there was another woman there too…she’d been there for a couple of months. Cookie stayed back in Texas with Benny and Dude to help her…acclimate.”
“God, I love you, Christopher. You know that right?”
“I do, sweet. I love you right back.”
“I’m proud of what you do. Those women are so lucky you and your team do what you do.”
“It’s missions like that that make our job easier. Even though it was tough, it’s always nice to be able to save people.” Abe stopped talking. Alabama was obviously done rehashing his mission. She was unbuttoning his shirt and kissing every inch of his chest as she bared it. He grinned to himself, he’d let her have her fun for a bit, he knew soon it’d be his turn.
He’d make contact with Cookie and check on the woman…later. Much later.
Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Texas where she lives but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, and Indiana. She is quite the romantic and even met the love of her life on "Hotmail classified" before online dating and sites like match.com even existed!
Susan has been reading romance novels since middle school and once crossed out the names of the main characters in a book and changed them to her own and to the name of her crush. She's been writing scenes for years, developing her unique writing style.
Susan loves writing but her true passion is adopting dogs from rescue groups and shelters. Susan and her husband have had a total of nine "rescued" dogs since 2000 including a variety of basset hounds and bloodhounds. She has recently branched out and adopted a basset/terrier mix who acts more like a terrier than a basset (i.e. digging, eating a couch and being hyper). If you love romance and want to help her support adopting great dogs, be sure to check out her work listed below.
