After Lenny changed disguises at the airport and stole another car, he headed to Buffalo. Despite being a small-time crook, Lenny knew how to get his hands on information about people. Before his mother died, her only request was that he better himself and try to be the man she raised him to be. She always told him, “Work hard to provide for your family and you will never be disappointed if you show people you can make something of yourself if you try. People will respect you more if you’re an upstanding citizen in life. Lying and stealing from people will only lose their respect.”

“Well, Mamma, like I always said, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Some of us are just wired that way.” Lenny sat in the train he had caught two hours ago. He had gone and shaved his head and bought some fake reading glasses. Before he left, he went into a store and bought a suit with money he stole from the guard. He knew they wouldn’t be looking for a businessman on the train. He stayed away from the airports now that he was getting close to Alexis’s hideout. Once he got closer, he would set his plan into effect.

“I’m coming for you, Alexis. We’ll be together real soon. Just you wait.”

After they all had lunch together, Kane thought it would be nice for them to take a ride on the horses and get some fresh air. Billy made sure they were well armed for their ride with the guns locked and loaded, if needed. Kane and Billy each had a two-way radio to communicate if a problem should arise. They knew what trails were secured and safe to stay on.

Max could tell Kane and Lexi both needed to get away. The fresh air would do them all good. Ever since Kane arrived back at the house for lunch, he had been quiet and he seemed lost in thought even when they had addressed him with a question. Max was scared for Lexi, just as Kane was. He knew, after the night they had with her, that things had changed for them all. It had hurt him to hear the fright in her voice when she found out that Lenny Cook had escaped and that he would be headed this way. He wanted nothing more than to wrap her up and hide her away until the bastard was found.

Alexis was such a beautiful person, inside and out. Why would anyone want to hurt someone so sweet and caring? It was great having two dads. There was always someone to help you do homework, someone there to teach you about ranching, and there was constant love and attention.”

“One day we want to raise our family and bring the kids up the way we grew up. We want to raise a family and do all the things with them that were bestowed upon us. Kane and I know we aren’t getting any younger and want to start a family of our own soon.” Max looked at Alexis from the corner of his eye and asked, “What about you, Lexi, have you thought about getting married and having a family someday?”

Alexis sighed and said, “I’ve actually thought about it a lot lately.” She picked at the grass next to her and looked at how the sun reflected off the water. “I’m thirty-two, and now that I have established my dream, I want to move on and start thinking about a future with a husband and eventually kids.”

Kane lay back on his elbows and raised his eyes to look at her long, beautiful hair that was cascading down her back. “When Max and I were in the Marines, all we thought about was when we were done serving our time for our country. We couldn’t wait to get back home and see our family and start planning a family of our own. When we were younger, all we thought about was when we were going to get laid next. He was so reserved and private. She wondered what woman could ever break down that tough exterior he kept around himself like a protective shield.

“The sun is getting ready to set. What do you say we head back to the house now?” Max said as he rose to his feet and helped her to stand in front of him. Kane folded the blanket and handed it to Max. After walking her to where the horses grazed, he held onto the horse’s reins while Max gave her a boost up.

It was a peaceful ride back. The way the mountains and the blue skies were put together was breathtaking. Alexis would be sad when this was all over, not that she didn’t want them to find Lenny, but she would miss Kane and Max immensely. She had grown fond of the two of them. “My folks want us to bring you to dinner tomorrow. My sister and her family are going to be there, and I think we could use the excuse to get out of the house.
