“You think she’s the strongest?” Anthony asked. It was the question he’d spent most of the night asking himself.
“I don’t know. I don’t even know how many of us are out there,” Rae answered, her eyes darkening. “But knowing
there are more, that I’m not the only one… I wonder if I’ll ever meet them. It’s scary to think about. I can almost see
why Steve Mercer went insane and did what he did. If you thought that something you created was so dangerous, it
makes sense that-”
“What he did to your mom doesn’t make sense, Rae,” Anthony interrupted. “The guy was deranged. If he wanted
to protect people, he should have swallowed a bullet before he started doing his experiments.”
“Yeah. I’m never going to stop hating him for what he did to my mother,” Rae acknowledged. “And to Mandy’s
mother, too. But I really can see how he got obsessed with eliminating everyone who might use their powers in
ways that could hurt people. How can anyone be safe with us walking around alive? With these abilities that-”
“Not all of them-you-are going to be Yanas,” Anthony reminded her, wanting to reach over andsmooth away the
crease that had appeared between Rae’s eyebrows but wrapping his hands around the steering wheel instead.
“Some will be Mandys. And Raes.”
“But are the Raes and Mandys going to be enough to keep the Yanas from…” Rae let her words trail off.
“If they have the help of the Anthonys and the Jesses and even the Aidens, then yeah, definitely. We’re the
stronger team,” Anthony said. The bell rang, and he reached for the door handle.
“Anthony,” Rae said, her voice loud in the interior of the car.
“What?” he asked.
“Do you think…?” Rae’s eyes lowered, refusing to meet his.
“Do I think what?” Anthony pressed.
“Do you think you might ever want to kiss me or put your arms around me or anything when you haven’t just
saved my life three seconds before?” Rae blurted, finally looking right into his eyes.
Did she want him to…? Wait. Was she asking? Anthony felt like, like… He couldn’t even describe it. Like he’d
swallowed a skyful of stars.
He reached out and took Rae’s face in his hands. His fingers were trembling, and he hoped she didn’t notice.
“Yeah,” he said, his voice coming out all husky. “I think I might want that.” And he loweredhis lips toward hers. It
wasn’t the first time they’d kissed, but it was the first time he’d actually had time to think about it. To realize exactly
what he was doing.
I’m kissing Rae Voight,
he thought as his lips brushed against hers. And this time he allowed
himself to feel the rush of emotion that came with that thought.
He raised his head. He needed a moment. He actually felt dizzy from that tiny bit of contact. He caught a flash of
movement out of the corner of his eye, then realized Marcus Salkow-totally oblivious to him and Rae-was walking
by the car.
That’s the kind of guy Rae should-
No. Anthony stopped himself midthought. Salkow didn’t deserve Rae. The weenie couldn’t even stand by her
when the truth came out about her mom.
“What?” Rae asked.
Anthony shook his head. “Nothing. I was just thinking how I really want to kiss you again.”
Rae smiled. “So what’s stopping you?”
“Absolutely nothing,” Anthony answered.
