Kate’s breathing sped up as Hugh asked, “How long are you staying?”

“Um … no idea,” Kate murmured, frantically trying to think up a good excuse she give as to why she was in Hailsboro. She finally said, “I want to take care of my grandmother a bit.”

Luckily, that was the moment Bessie came out of the meeting room, pink cupcake in hand, to look for her. Kate let out a long, grateful breath. It wouldn’t be good for her soul to keep on standing there with Hugh Lindsay any longer.

“Oh, I should go, Bessie’s waiting for me. But it was nice to see you again.”

“Likewise,” he replied. He turned to go, too, but first leaned toward her with a grin and murmured, “Bye, Kit Kat.”
