This is my first Afterword, but this is also the first book I’ve written that ends a trilogy. The reason for this is twofold:

1) I love Detective Bobby Mac, as do many readers. He is a police character and a human being I enjoy writing as he is representative of so many. He is flawed, he is a man’s man, he is heroic but also knows what it is to need vengeance. I will likely write more Bobby Mac books one day, perhaps soon. But that brings me to the next reason:

2) I added the paranormal, Good versus Evil, horror-like aspect to this series because I wanted to produce something a little different, but in crossing genres I’ve had mixed reactions. From more than a few writers I respect, they believe the paranormal aspect, as I refer to it, breaks my “brand” as a Mystery/Detective writer. From readers I respect (and they count most), I have received reviews that imply the series would be better without the “hocus-pocus”.

What I meant to add to this series was not traditional, mainstream Paranormal/Horror (e.g. Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires) but rather a very real-world God/Devil, Good/Evil element and to examine the “what if” a police officer found out he was really part of something larger than just him or his own generation but rather a millenniums-long struggle tied to his family name.

To my proofreader, beta reader, friend, confidant, and most importantly to the book, an honest reader and commenter, Gail Gentry. Like an editor, you always have the perfect suggestions and your proofing is eagle-eyed.  Your forthcoming novel will show the world how much talent you’ve been gifted.

To my wife, Amy, who has read every novel I write more times in full and in part than any other living human being, thank you for believing in me but most for being by my side. The further we get in this journey to that porch swing the more I depend on you and you have supported my dream from the beginning. I love you.

And to the readers. I’ve said it before but will continue to reaffirm it: you are the lifeblood to the writer. And for me, every letter, each word, all the pages—they are ultimately for you. When you humble authors by reading their work and further by telling others, you literally help the writer survive to write another day. You are so very much appreciated.

But somewhere in the near future, there is a dog book digging to get out, and it will pay homage to the kindest, most loyal animals on the planet.
