“Yea, something like that.
”
His voice quivered. It was obvious as she
pulled his pants d
own that he was quite aroused. Eve
brushed
her
hand over him and
he leaned up to touch her
lips to his.
“Well, I just don’t think this would be an appropriate time for a qui
ckie. Sorry, later I promise,” she
whispered.
“You’re very, very bad,” he replie
d smiling as he shook his head.
Eve smiled back and
turned
to
slide her
dress on.
“Already?” Adam asked.
She
turned back to see him holding the two packs of Twinkies.
“Already what? I’m hungry.”
She
snatch
ed
one from him. “I got one for you and chocolate milk too.”
“I meant already with the cravings,” he stated shooting
her
a look that said
smart ass.
“I hadn’t thought of it that way, I guess it co
uld be. I really wanted—” She paused as her mouth curled up when she realized what he was talking about.
“
P
ickles. This is surreal, that’s all I can say.”
Th
e
y both laughed. She
was having cravings and hadn’t recognized it.
They
were on their
way to the airport after a round of Twinkies, c
hocolate milk and Tylenol. As she drove, Adam quizzed her
.
“How far along do you t
hink?” Adam gently, brushed his thumb across her cheek. It hurt, but she wasn’t going to tell him that. She needed his touch too much.
“Probably four or five weeks, no more than six though.”
“W
ill it be a boy or a girl?” he asked.
Eve
laughed immediately, “I don’t know but we can find out in about twelve more weeks.”
“What? I didn’t know
. I didn’t go to medical school, remember
.”
“I know, it’s just funny that’s all. What else do you want to know?”
Eve liked this conversation even if his questions were comical.
“What about things like the Tylenol you took earlier? Can that hurt the baby?”
“Tylenol is safe, and honestly that’s about it on the drug line. So if I get the flu, I’m screwed. No alcohol either. Otherwise it’s bus
iness as usual, no restrictions.
”
She
confidently rubbed his leg
.
“I don’t think that a doctor would necessarily approve of a pregnant woman going around killing people as a safe
extra-curricular
activity,” he said seriously.
“Probably not, but it’s too late for that now. Besides I’m not planning on making a habit out of it.”
The chirp of the cell phone was an abrupt but welcome sound. Adam answered and greeted Charlie Perez. Adam listened a
nd agreed to a location to meet him.
Eve
parked at the airport and went into the terminal to m
eet Charlie. Eve
needed to stop at the restroom so Adam waited for
her outside the door. As she exited she
saw him talking to a giant of a man. He
had to be
about six foot six and about two hundred and eighty pounds of solid muscle sporting a tropical shirt and white pants
. His last name was Perez and she
had assumed that the man would be of Mexican descent,
but
instead
he was clearly African-American. Once she heard his thick Chicago accent, she almost laughed. It struck her oddly, that’s all.
“Charlie, this is my wife, Eve,” he said taking
her
hand in
his. Eve
felt a rush of excitement as
Adam
introduced
her
as his wife, it felt exhilarating. “Eve this is my good friend Charlie Perez.”
She
extended
her
hand and still couldn’t believe the size of him as h
is monstrous hand swallowed her
, but his touch was gentle.
“I’m sure you were expecting someone else with the last name and all,” said
Charlie chuckling as he shook her
hand.
“I have to admit that I’m a little surprised, very nice to meet you though Charlie.”
“So are we go
od to go?” Adam asked quietly. Eve
didn’t know what the plan was but it didn’t matter, Sanders wasn’t really a physical threat to us at this point. H
e was on foreign territory and she
had already taken out the man that
she
was personally afraid of.
“Yep. That plane won’t get off the ground,” Charlie
replied.
Eve
just listened to them trying
to catch up on the parts that she
wasn’t aware of yet. It seemed that there would be a bomb threat called in any minute for that particular flight and that all flights would be delayed and most likely cancelled. Sanders would be trapped here.
Knowing that he would want to get back to the states as soon as possible, he would
want probably rent a car to get
him to
the
airport in Mexico City
.
They
were going to get to him then.
The trio
waited at the airport and watched the chaos as the news spread. Then
she
saw Sanders.
“There he is,” she
whispered to Adam and Ch
arlie. “That piece of shit, I want to
fucking kill him right now—
”
“Eve, calm down.” Adam
grabb
ed her
arm.
“Tenacious,” stated Charlie.
“When
she’s pissed, you have no idea.
”
He squeezed her hand, but she ignored them.
“I’ll have to fill you in sometime.”
Adam took
her
to the car while C
harlie watched Sanders inside. Eve could tell that Adam felt much better
and was planning
to do
the driving. He was trying to keep
Eve
calm while
they
waited
by telling her how pretty she looked, but Eve’s anger overrode her hormones and she didn’t really respond to his comments.
Soon
,
Charlie appeared at the car and climbed into the back seat.
“He’s renting a car now, drive to the lot and we’ll be able to follow him,” he instructed.
Eve opened the glove box,
pulled out
Edwards’ gun and placed it on her
lap. Being as impatient as she
was
she didn’t realize that she
was annoyi
ngly tapping on the metal with her fingernails until Adam placed his hand on hers.
“Eve. Calm down, didn’t you hear me?”
“What
? I’m sorry what did you say?” she
asked.
“You need to relax. The stress isn’t good for you,” he said to
her
.
She
couldn’
t think of anything to say, so she
didn’t.
Eve
saw him glance in t
he rearview mirror to Charlie and
ignored the non-verbal communication
.
Instead, she
turned
and looked out the window as they
drove to the lot. Adam and Charlie were cha
tting away about something but she
didn’t pay attention to what.
Her
focus was solely on Sanders and
killing him.
“There he is in that blue sedan.
” Charlie
pointed out
.
Adam kept a safe distance beh
ind Sanders as they
followed. The clock in the car s
howed it was approaching eight now
, but
she
wasn’t tired.
Eve
was anxious and it was time to get rid of this problem. The anxiety in
her
had turned into anger again.
Then she
smiled to
herself
thinking that maybe
she
would need an anger management course or some the
rapy after this was over, but then again she
really doubted it.
They
continued to follow as Sanders drove out of town. He was oblivious to the fact t
hat Edwards was dead, or that they
were behind him. Finally
,
in the dark and on the highwa
y away from any other traffic they
closed in on him.
“Hold on,” said Adam as he floored t
he gas. The bumper of the car they
were in nudged the rear of the b
lue sedan. Then he did it
harder
,
this time causing Sanders to lose control of the vehicle slightly.
Sanders hit the brakes,
actually causing him to fishtail back and forth on the road. Adam accelerated t
he gas again and rammed the car,
sending it spinning
into the ditch. Adam slowed the
car down
and pulled
up behind Sanders v
ehicle.
Eve opened the car door before Adam
even had
the vehicle
stopped.
She
fel
t the brush of Adam’s hand on her
arm, but
she
was already out the door. Gun in hand
, she pointed it at the car and
ran to the drivers
’
side door. The airbag had deployed knocking him breathless.
“Don’t move!” she shouted. The window had broken out and Eve extended her arm in to
press the gun to his temple. “Do you know what it was like to see my husband’s burned body or to know what the smell was like and to see him in unbearable pain and not able to take it away?”
“Eve, don’t do this,” pleaded Adam. “Let us take c
are of this please.” He placed his hand on hers
. Then with his ot
her hand, he took the gun from her. She
sighed and threw
her arms around Adam’s neck.
The tears poured down her face, but she kept her sobbing silent.
She
heard Adam talk to Charlie and then he walked
her
to the car
.
O
pening the back door
, he slid in pulling her
in with him.
“I’m sorry. I d
on’t know what came over me,” she
sobbe
d. He wrapped his arms around her
.
“Shhh, don’t be sorry, I’m so sorry that you had to be any part of this at all. Just breath, just focus on me, focus on the baby,” he whispered.
She
held onto him thinking of exactly w
hat he said,
the baby. Eve
heard the trunk of the car close and then C
harlie took the driver’s seat. She wiped the tears from her
eyes and looked at Adam.
“What’s going on? What are we doing
?” Adam kept his grip around her
as he spoke.
“Charlie is going to take us back to the hotel and then
he’ll take care of Mr. Sanders.
”
H
e
pointed
his thumb behind
them
toward the trunk. “W
e’re done with this. It’s over.”
Eve
leaned into Adam’s shoulder as
they road back into Acapulco Bay. She
had a handful of his t-shirt in
her
hand and wasn’t letting go. It was too hard to believe that it might actually be over, that
they
wouldn’t be running anymore.
Charlie dropped
them
at the entrance to the hotel.
Adam took her to their room and ran her a hot bath.
Peeling her out of her dress and removing the knife and sheath, Adam helped her into the tub. As he
gently washed
her back,
she sat silently with her legs drawn up against her and her arms wrapped around them.
“I
t’s over. We’re free, we can go wherever you want to go and live a normal life.”
Adam spoke softly and Eve knew he was just reassuring her that they were all right now.
