“Please. I cannot go to my prom.” He spoke low, but he definitely had a slight accent.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I go to St. Charles. It is a Catholic school. They do not allow same sex couples to attend dances. This will be my only chance to go to a high school prom. So again, we ask you, please?” Marco gave Tom pleading eyes. I could tell Marco’s pleas were swaying his decision. He was such a big softy, even if he tried to hide it.
“One prom won’t kill me, right?” Tom joked, and smiles spread across Zach and Marco’s faces. I was touched by his compassion for Marco’s situation. I laced my fingers with his and smiled up at him. I didn’t care if Nicole thought he was boring, Tom was a
good
guy.
“Right!” Zach said exuberantly.
“I’ll get us drinks.” I announced, waltzing over to the bar. A guy wearing an outfit that was an interesting combination of black leather and cotton was shaking up a drink for a customer.
“Oh yeah, I’m totally feeling that outfit.” The bartender said when his attention turned to me. “Red skirt and black top. That is bold and so dangerous. I love it. Now, if you only had on some red lipstick then you would be head to toe sex appeal.” My hand instinctively flew to my mouth where I had just worn lip gloss. I
had
considered wearing some red lipstick but decided it was too much and stuck it in my purse. I began to second guess my decision.
“Thanks.” I said to the unexpected compliments. “Can I get three strawberry daiquiris and one beer?” His eyes flickered over to our booth.
“The straight ones always order beer.” The bartender said.
“It’s not like that. He always drinks beer.” I told him, but his expression said he didn’t believe me.
“I’m going to need to see some ID.” He affirmed as if he just realized how young we all appeared. I tugged out my fake ID and showed it to him. He seemed satisfied and began mixing our drinks.
We spent the next few hours chatting with Zach and Marco. At least ninety percent of the conversation was filled with Zach’s plans for all of us at prom. He rented a stretch limo and wanted all of us to coordinate colors. Tom even managed to not look bored out of his mind, which I’m almost positive he was. Before we left, I excused myself to the bathroom. Staring at my reflection in the mirror, I contemplated what the bartender had said. I tugged my red lipstick out and drug it across my lips. He was right. It made all the difference in the world. I suddenly looked older, more mature, and… sexier. I rarely felt that I looked sexy but right now, I had to admit that I did.
As I rejoined the guys, I could tell by the expression on Tom’s face that he felt the same way. I felt an energy rush through me that felt very sexual. It danced as I thought about what might happen, tonight.
Erica Lee Cooke grew up in the little town of Bridgeport, TX. As the oldest sibling of six, she became a great storyteller, and as her imagination grew, she began to put on plays with her brothers, sisters, and various cousins as cast members. With few quiet moments at home, she did not truly begin to discover her love of reading until school, but once she did, there was no stopping her. Soon, reading stories was not enough, so she started putting pen to paper and wrote her very first book at the age of nine. Although it was never published, she proudly paraded it for all of her family and friends to read. She attributes her story ideas to her extremely vivid dreams. She is currently working on the second book to
The Eyes of a Phantom Trilogy
while concurrently working on her series
Supernaturally Bound
