In a case of all’s well that ends well, I ended up signing a deal with Alejandro after all. Tanner overplayed his hand, tried to squeeze Alejandro too much, and I got the contract. Maybe my negotiating skill had won the day, or maybe his memories of his time with Joanie ultimately swayed him to decide to work with me. Or maybe I won him over that night in the hotel room, when he saw me finally stand up for my wife.

I can’t be sure, which is why as with everything else, I have mixed feelings about what happened that week. I’d acted awfully, but had gotten much of what I wanted, a new start in business, a new passion in the bedroom. It was almost enough to encourage me in my sociopathic tendencies. And yet, I knew also how close I’d come to destroying everything I cared out.

I know Joanie still struggles with the guilt of what she did as well. Provoked or not, it was a shock to her own sensibilities that she had that inside her. On the positive side, she turned to writing as a way to explore her feelings, and is now finishing up a novel that builds on the events of the week.

Of course, there are no free lunches in life. As I promised Alejandro, I was trying a new path, building rather than destroying or just skimming off the top. A white knight capital fund. We seek out good ideas that just need a little more time, a few more connections, and try to make them work. We offer generous terms and encourage them to keep workers on their payroll. We’re investing for the long-term.

It is long hours. Too long, too often.

I came home one night, way too late. My dinner was still on the kitchen table, cold and congealed, looking as forlorn as the glass of wine Joanie had poured for me and left as a testament to my distraction. I thought she was asleep, so I was surprised to hear footsteps coming down the stairs.

“Whoa,” I said in surprise.

Instead of PJs and slippers, she’d donned the black dress and stockings from that night at the Westin.

“Is that for me?” I asked playfully.

She looked down at her outfit as if surprised to see what she was wearing. When she looked back up and me, she had a cryptic smile on her face.

“Sorry, honey, I have a date.”

I groaned. “I know I’ve been taking you for granted –“

She cut me off, “Then you know this is my way of reminding you.”

“You don’t need to do this.”

She continued down the stairs and picked up her handbag.

“It seems like I do. And anyway… I want to.”

I nodded. “Okay. I guess I deserve it.”

I had to admit, I had mixed feelings. I didn’t want my wife to have sex with another man… yet again. Still, I had been benefitting from her new openness in bed for months. We were still pretty vanilla, but definitely with some sprinkles and the occasional cherry on top.

“Anyone I know?”

“Actually,” she smirked. “Yes.”

“Oh.”

Well that sucked. Other than Alejandro, I didn’t have any contact with the other men she’d been with, which I considered a blessing.

The doorbell rang. “Oooh, right on time.”

I wasn’t surprised. Most men were smart enough, or maybe horny enough, not to keep Joanie waiting.

“Okay, well, have fun,” I said, trying and failing to conceal my misery.

I started toward the kitchen and the first of what I planned to be several beers.

“Don’t you want to meet my date?”

I stopped. No, I really didn’t want to have to shake hands with the man who would be teaching me a lesson by fucking my wife.

“I think I don’t have a choice.”

I followed her to the door. She opened it slowly. And to my shock, and I admit delight, in walked a petite, very pretty, blonde in a black and white striped party dress. Amber. The stripper who’d seduced Joanie in the club.

She entered and pressed herself against my wife, giving her a wet kiss.

“Hey beautiful. Ready to have some fun?” Amber asked.

“Uh, why don’t you both stay here?” I suggested hopefully. “We could all have fun.”

Amber looked from me to Joanie, and then laughed. “Men are so funny. You can barely satisfy one woman, and you’re always trying to get two at the same time.”

Joanie smirked in pleasure.

Amber leaned in toward me. “Don’t worry. I won’t ruin her.” A pause. A wicked smile. “Well, maybe a little.”

She took my wife by the hand and pulled her out the door.

“Don’t wait up,” Joanie called over her shoulder.

I laughed.

, I was going to wait up. This was one date that I couldn’t wait to hear recounted in lurid, explicit, graphic detail.
