Putting a first book out there for the world to read is like stand-ing on a podium naked and asking people to judge you, body and soul. This is because each book is a clear reflection of its author, her personality, her thoughts and experiences, her way of look-ing at the world. Judgment, therefore, will not only be about her writing, but about . . .
her soul
!

It is extremely frightening to take that step up to the podium, utterly exposed; the least bit of jiggle, cellulite, or sagging clearly visible to potentially cruel judges.

It is also an exhilarating experience when the judges agree the results are pretty good, and any minor jiggle can be forgiven. To a first-time author, this means not only that she did the right thing giving up her day job to write books, but also removes any lingering doubt in her mind as to whether she is a good human being worthy of inhaling air on this planet.

To all those who supported me in the roller-coaster ride of bringing out
Sex with Kings
while simultaneously working on
Sex with
the Queen,
I thank you most heartily. On the personal side, this is my amazingly patient husband, Michael Dyment; my encourag-ing sister, Christine Merrill; and my supportive father, Walter Herman. I would also like to thank my friends Kitty Jensen and Steve Ledebur, who attended so many
Sex with Kings
book events with an entourage dressed in full Renaissance costume. The ladies-in-waiting on my European book tour—my friends Leslie Harris of Noblesse Oblige costumes, and Lorraine Nordlinger—3 2 3

deserve special gratitude for wearing those tight corsets.

On the professional side I have been extremely fortunate to work with amazing women on both sides of the Atlantic. My edi-tors Angelika Schwartz and Karin Herber-Schlapp at Fischer Verlag in Frankfurt, Germany, and my agent Barbara Perlmutter in New York, have been an absolute delight.

The ongoing laughter I have shared with my contacts at William Morrow has never reduced the high level of profession-alism of our work. Many thanks are due to my editor Lucia Macro; her assistant, Kelly Harms; and my thick-skinned, hard-working publicists, Dee Dee Di Bartolo and Shannon Valcich.
