“Did you hear what I said?” She hooked her arm around his
waist. “I’m not going to dress sexy anymore.” She figured that was at least
part of the reason Diego was drawn to her. She expected a fight on the matter.

Diego pushed through the doors of the police station. He
turned his face toward the sun and took a deep breath. He glanced over at her.
“You look pretty damn sexy now.”

Yancey snorted a laugh. “Do not.”

“I’m crazy about those thick black frames.” He winked at
her. “Secretary sexy. Put your hair in a bun so I can mess it up. I’ll be a
happy man.”

Her face heated up and she pushed her glasses up the bridge of
her nose. “I think you’re just crazy.”

The glasses did feel foreign after wearing contact lenses
for so long. She might embrace that one change, saving the glasses just for
Diego if he liked them so much. Yancey sort of liked the empowering feel of her
sexy underwear beneath her clothes. Hair product that tamed her curls was just
a gift from God. And who didn’t enjoy a pedicure? But beyond that, she was
going back to being plain Yancey.

“Did you happen to hear what I said to you yesterday?” he
asked, squeezing her shoulder.

She wrinkled her nose. “When?”

“When they escorted you away to the police cruiser,” he
reminded her.

“When you called out my name?” she asked.

“After that.”

“When you asked the cops, ‘What the hell is going on?’” She
mocked him by lowering her voice, adding a hint of indignation.

“After that,” he said.

Yancey put her index finger to her chin and pretended to
ponder. “It was a stressful day. A lot happened.” She screwed up her face. “Let
me think. Do you mean when you professed your love to me?”

“So you did hear me, you little minx.” Diego lightly smacked
her ass. “And then you said something to me.”

“Did I?” she teased, enjoying herself for the first time in
over twenty-four hours.

After spending a good part of the night in tears, she’d been
beginning to think she’d never feel normal again. Stanley had left her feeling
empty. She wasn’t there yet—normal—but knew she would get over the ordeal
eventually. Eventually she’d sleep without nightmares like those she’d suffered
the previous night. One day she’d go for hours without thinking about nearly
being raped. Someday she’d go days without thinking about what she’d had to do
to another human being in order to save herself. And hopefully she’d find a
happy medium between the dowdy egghead she’d been and the super-sexy siren
she’d become. Somewhere in the middle there was a sexy egghead.

“You did,” he said. “What was it you said to me?”

She touched her fingers to his face. “I love you, Diego.”

“Girl, I love you too,” he whispered against her lips.
