Leonidas knew precisely what Corse was up to, and he couldn’t do a damn thing about it. Not if he wanted Marin to live. An hour before midnight, Mr. Tech-face had sent him a picture of her. She was standing in the middle of a lab, surrounded by bomb parts and wearing a running suit. Weird as that would have been for anyone else, it was just another day in Marin’s life. A life he had to make sure continued.
And so he didn’t stop Corse. He didn’t warn the Selpe soldiers, even as a streak of red-orange hair moved past the window no one was looking out. He didn’t call out when he saw the swarm of Avan soldiers following the fiery streak. Nor did he run outside and try to free the two hooded figures, the boys he knew to be Hayden and Ian Selpe, heirs to the empire he’d sworn to serve.
Instead, he jumped up onto that stage and immediately launched into an embarrassing story about Corse, to the roars of delighted laughter of all Selpes present.
