“What?” Wills looked up at me, startled.
I squealed again in the same way and pulled Wills’s head toward me, acting as though it was a cry of pleasure. “I just—I need you. Now.
Inside
.”
He kissed me again, copping one more feel before I pulled out my keys and stuck them in the door. I let him walk in first. Before I entered, I turned and flipped Lucien the bird.
I shut the door behind me and Wills grabbed me into his arms, throwing me roughly to the ground. Usually such a gentleman, I loved when he got rough.
His hands wrapped around the waist of my shirt and ripped it off my body, not caring that a few of the seams came apart and stretched as he tore it off me.
I raised an eyebrow at him. “I could have taken it off.”
He growled and lowered his mouth to my breasts, running a tongue along my tight nipple. His hands were already tugging my pants down, and I pulled his shirt off over his head. He ran his hands along my smooth thighs and I made a mental note to remember to shave in the morning. His hands landed at my knees and pushed my legs apart. He hovered above me, breathing in my scent, making me wait for it. I moaned from the ground and ran my fingers into his hair, tugging at him to get his mouth closer to me. He didn’t move.
“Not until I say so.” His voice was dark, gruff. He leaned down and planted a soft kiss on me, gently running his tongue up the length of my sex. My body shivered, and I wrapped his hair around my fingers, tugging even more. Tortuously slow, he continued those long laps until I was writhing on the floor. Finally, he nipped at my clit and used more pressure with his tongue. He alternated between fast and slow, light and firm pressure. He’d move slowly over my lips and then dart a firm tongue inside me. Back and forth he continued like that until I thought I would explode. I lifted my hips, trying to push myself into him and fulfill my yearning. He moved into a steady pace, lapping at me firmer with each stroke. Using a finger, he massaged me from the inside. Quickening the pace, pumping first one, then two fingers in and out of my wet sex while his tongue flicked quickly over my clit. When I finally came, I thrashed around the floor, screaming wildly. There was no itch. There was no life force to steal. Just satisfying, luxurious orgasms. He pinned me down as I came, still licking at me through my spasms.
The two of us stripped him down until he was naked and he lay on top of me, skin on skin. I could feel his erection pressing against my body, though he had yet to enter me. I slid my hands down over his chest. He had new bumps and raised scar tissue along his skin, and I dusted my fingers over them as though I were reading Braille. My hands ran past his stomach with just the slightest amount of a happy trail, and when I finally reached his shaft, I gripped it firmly. He grunted and sighed as I stroked him. He was long and hard, just as I had remembered him. I cupped his balls with my other hand, gently rolling them around. His hips pulsated with each stroke, and I guided him toward me, sliding him inside. I spread my legs wider, welcoming him, and he filled me entirely. Maybe it was because I was human again and could be hurt, or maybe it had just been so long since Wills and I had had sex—but there was the slightest amount of pain around his length that felt simply delicious.
He moved in and out of me with skilled, fluid movements. My wrists were pinned to the floor, and Wills watched my face, smiling as I moaned and bucked with each thrust. With hands clamped around my wrists, he kissed me as though it might be the last kiss ever. His movements grew more fierce, more animalistic, as we each got more excited. Releasing my wrists, he grunted as his hips rotated, sweat rolling down his boyish face. Harder and harder he pumped himself, and I screamed with pleasure as my body tightened around him. I wrapped my legs around his waist and lifted my ass into the air, shifting the angle at which he entered me from. The tip of his cock hit me deep inside, and somehow it still wasn’t close enough. I wanted more of him. I clawed at his arms, pulling him down to me once more. My mouth found his and I pressed my breasts to him, holding his body tightly to mine while bucking against him. He closed his eyes and threw his head back. With one final, hard thrust, he held himself in place inside me and trembled with pleasure.
He rolled away and landed on the floor beside me, sweaty and happy. We lay there next to each other in silence.
“What happened to your leg?”
Shit.
“I fell. Drew saw, and I had to keep up appearances that I was hurt. Couldn’t have a deep gash healing within seconds of him seeing it. He drove me to the hospital, and you know the rest. He called you, right?” I inwardly cringed at the lie. It was for his own good, though. The more he got involved in this murder business, the more dangerous it would be for him. I sat up on an elbow and ran my fingers over his stomach and up through the little bit of chest hair he had. I trailed my hands across the small scars on his arms and chest, finally landing on the large one that ran horizontally across his stomach. The scar tissue was coarse and angry. He grabbed my hand, darting it out to stop mine from touching him. I cleared my throat, searching for a happier topic. “Looks like you’ve been working out lately, huh?”
He looked at me out of the corner of his eyes and smiled. “Yeah, well, a century of being alive will make one take care of himself.” I continued running my fingers over his body, avoiding the scars this time.
I had never in my life stepped foot inside a gym. If I was going to be mortal for a while, I should probably consider a membership. I thought back to my ripped pants and cringed.
He leaned up on his elbow this time, eyes raking over my body, taking it all in until he finally stopped at my face. He nodded slowly. “You’re a legend of sorts among the demons. You know that, right?”
I shrugged and rolled my eyes. I definitely knew that, but I didn’t want it to become a weird source of contention between us. Especially since Wills was such a lower immortal. “It’s just because no one knows why exactly I came to be.”
“Word on the street is that you were tempted by a vampire. He had sex with you and bit you—which would normally turn a human into a vampire. But with you, the angel, it turned you into a succubus.”
I swallowed and looked at Wills, thinking of the two “birthmarks” on my leg. His voice sounded hollow. As if he was reciting a story in front of a campfire—not about the woman he made love to only moments ago.
“Is that what they say?” I held his gaze, not daring to look away. “What other ‘legends’ are there about me out there?”
He nodded. “It’s said that you’re powerful. Extremely powerful. You should only be a lower-level succubus, but if you harness your powers, you could defeat the Queen. You might be stronger than your Queen.”
I laughed at that one. I had seen Mia’s power firsthand. I was nowhere near her level.
“And then, of course,” Wills said, “there are the stories of you not fulfilling your quotas for the underworld. Demons and succubi admire it about you in their own weird ways. The fact that you stand up for something you believe in. Most of us don’t believe in anything anymore . . . but not Monica. Somehow, despite the evil you see daily, you manage to stand up for the ideals you once had as an angel. It’s remarkable.” He leaned over and kissed me, deep and slowly this time. There was a sizzle in the air, a similar sound to putting raw meat in a hot skillet. The power inside me crackled and my heart skipped a beat. It was a small hint that somewhere inside me, I still possessed some magic. Wills looked at me curiously, obviously feeling the power surge, too. I kissed him again quickly, to distract him. It worked. Within seconds he scooped me up and walked us over to my bedroom, dropping me onto the bed, where we proceeded to have an encore of earlier—in a bit more civilized manner. Our bodies twisted around each other, finding nooks and crannies neither of us knew existed.
Sometime in the wee hours of the morning, I fell asleep nestled against his chest. My ringing phone jolted me awake. Based on the faint and cloudy light creeping in through my curtains, I guessed it was around six.
“Mmph,” I said into the receiver.
“Monica? You there?”
It was Drew’s voice. Not a bad sound to wake up to, but at this ungodly hour no one’s voice would make me feel chipper. “Mmph,” I said again. I figured this would get my point across.
A chuckle came from the other end of the line. “Good morning, sunshine. How’s the leg feeling?”
“No,” I said.
“No, what?”
“No, I’m not coming in early today.”
“How did you know I was gonna—”
“It’s six-fucking-a.m. What else would you be calling about? You know better than to call me this early to simply inquire about my health.”
He sighed, and his pleading was palpable through the phone line before he even began speaking. “Please, Monica. Genevieve called in sick. I tried everyone else first and no one can make it.” I didn’t say anything, waiting for more. “I’ll make you breakfast. Please?”
“And lunch. Something nice. Some griddle eggs and a bagel isn’t gonna cut it this time.”
He huffed a breath. “Fine, breakfast and lunch. But you have to enjoy both in my company.” I could hear his smile.
“Deal.” I hung up, and as I threw the covers back, an arm snake around my stomach, pulling me back to bed.
“Where do you think you’re going?” His voice was deep, gravely. Rough like old cobblestone streets. He rolled on top of me, and I could feel he was already excited. He pushed his erection into me with a thrust, and I threw my head back in pleasure. I only lived a few blocks from the café—an extra fifteen minutes wouldn’t hurt.
Exactly twelve minutes later, I was stepping into the shower and rinsing off yesterday’s grime. I looked down at my stitches, careful to keep them out of the stream of water. They were almost healed thanks to Lucien’s touch. I wondered how I’d explain that to the doctors. I wrapped a towel around me and peeked out at Wills, who had fallen back asleep in my bed. I shut the bathroom door and swept eyeshadow across my eyelid. He would definitely get suspicious if he saw me physically getting ready for work. Another eight minutes passed and I decided that I looked good enough to make it through the day. I threw some of the makeup into my purse and, still wrapped in a towel, went to my closet for something to wear. I tiptoed past Wills and chose low-slung jeans and a white fitted T-shirt. I stepped out to look in my full-length mirror, hung on the closet door, and there, taped to it, was another note.

Genesis 1:27: When the Almighty created the first, solitary man, He said: It is not good for man to be alone. And He fashioned for man a woman from the earth, like him (Adam), and called her Lilith. Soon, they began to quarrel with each other. She said to him: I will not lie underneath, and he said: I will not lie underneath but above, for you are meant to lie underneath and I to lie above. She said to him: We are both equal, because we are both created from the earth. But they did not listen to each other.
Did you enjoy your tryst last night? I bet you didn’t like being pinned down during sex. . . .

“Is that what you’re wearing today?”
The sound of Wills’s voice made me jump. I crumpled the note and shoved it into my purse.
“I planned to, yes.”
“To work?” His lips were pressed together and he was still naked, with just the littlest bit of a sheet covering his most impressive parts.
I nodded and took another look in the mirror. Jeans. White T-shirt. Pumas. Nothing spectacular or weird about it that I could see. I nodded, looking at him with a shrug.
“Dressing sexy for your boss, I see.” He flopped onto his back with a dramatic sigh. “Next thing I know you’ll be shifting your hair to platinum blond and brittle.”
I almost laughed, but his pained expression made me stop. I looked down at my shirt, which was thick, was not see-through, and showed absolutely no cleavage. “Are you kidding me? This is so not the kind of outfit Adrienne would wear.”
“Sure it is. On an off day.”
I narrowed my eyes at him, steam rising from my ears. “Are you implying that I look like Adrienne on a
bad
day? Is that a challenge?”
His eyebrow shot up. “If the tacky shoe fits.”
I looked down again at my Pumas. Pumas are so
not
tacky. Jackass. I had completely forgotten how jealous Wills was. Even back in his human days. I raised an eyebrow back at him and waited. We stood there locked in each other’s gaze, waiting for the other to crack.
Finally Wills exhaled. “Will you please just change.”
My eyes lowered to slits and I could feel my nostrils flaring with each breath. I pivoted on my heel and went back into my closet. “
Sure,
darling. What do you propose I wear for the day? My June Cleaver dress? Some Mormon underwear? Oh, oh, I know—I’ll just put on my Amish bonnet.” Before he could answer, I slammed the door behind me and ripped off my clothes, throwing them in an angry heap on the floor. I found the tightest jeans I could squeeze into and pulled my black thong up high on my hips so it came out of the jeans. I slipped an abs-bearing T-shirt over my head—this one was sheer—and wore a black bra underneath. My cleavage popped up to my chin. I switched my Pumas for peep-toe kitten heels and stomped back out to the bedroom.
“Is this better?” I had my hands on my hips. “At least now I look like Adrienne on a
good
day.”
Wills opened his eyes groggily, and his jaw clenched when he finally got a good look. I saw the sheet over his region rise up like he was pitching a tent. I grabbed my purse and hustled out of the room before he could jump up and stop me. My purse was a lot heavier than normal, and I had to use two hands to hike it over my shoulder. I remembered the Smith & Wesson and took a look to make sure the safety was still on. With my head down, I almost ran directly into Kayce, who stifled my scream by covering my mouth. She put a finger to her lips and we scooted outside quickly.
