"Is this all a dream?"
Ethan smiled as he stroked my cheek. "What do you think?"
"It just seems so perfect."
"Then pinch yourself, Kara."
I did as he asked. "Ow!"
Ethan laughed. "Still dreaming?"
I giggled for the hundredth time that morning. "Doesn’t seem that way."
Ethan kissed my forehead. "Shall we go and get breakfast? I know a great little place not far from here. They serve the best pancakes you'll ever eat in your life."
I snuggled into him. "Pancakes, coffee and you. Sounds like the perfect way to start a day."
"I'm sorry, Kara," Ethan said quietly. "I wish I hadn't been such a jerk to you for so long."
"You're still a jerk," I said, laughing. "But you're my jerk now."
He paused for a moment. "Where do we go from here? You have your career and…well, you know what I do for a living. How do you feel about that?"
For once, I didn't know what to say. "Let's not talk about that now. Let's just figure all of that out some other day, okay?"
He nodded and kissed me again before a knock at the door interrupted us. "Did you call room service?" he asked.
I slipped on a black satin robe and made my way to the door. "Nope. Give me a minute. I'll get rid of whoever it is. I'm ready for another round before heading for breakfast, gigolo." As I opened the handle, I stupidly hadn't thought to look through the peephole first.
"Darling!"
My eyes almost popped out of my head. "Mom? What the hell are you doing here?"
"I promised I'd come and see your new artwork, remember? I thought I'd surprise you by not telling you when."
"Jesus Christ," I muttered. This was a disaster. An unmitigated, mind-boggling, apocalyptic disaster.
"Well, aren't you going to let me in?"
As I contemplated the horror of my mother's reaction when she saw my stepbrother in bed, I suddenly realized that life in Vegas had just got
really
interesting.
