Chapter 8

My overnight bag is stuffed with everything that I need. Mostly condoms.

I pull into his apartment complex and text him to get the popcorn ready and to pop the movie in. I pull into the guest parking space and from where I park I see him through the blinds in his kitchen window.

My phone buzzes. It’s a text from Kim.

KIM: Sorry how I acted earlier. I was a bitch.

KIM: Amy gave me your number btw.

ME: It’s okay. I appreciate taking the time to listen.

KIM: I thought about what you said. I’m ready. I want to come forward.

ME: Really?

KIM: Yeah. Let’s do it. Tomorrow.

ME: Ok. Let’s do it. I’ll come by tomorrow and talk. 3pm?

KIM: 3 is good. See you then.

ME: Bye.

I smile slightly, feeling a weight flow away from me.

In my rear view I see a car speeding up behind me. The tires come to screeching halt before nearly t-boning the rear end of my car. The headlights are blinding me.

I dart out of the car, ready to verbally thrash whatever drunken frat boy who almost totaled my car. It’s already a piece of shit, I don’t need any more problems with it—like having my entire rear torn off.

“Hey asshole,” I shout. I still can’t see the figure. They say nothing. “Hey asshole. You hear me talking to you? You almost hit my car.” I inch over to the car. The lights are so bright; I can’t even make out what kind of car it is. “Hey,” I shout. What the hell is this guy’s problem?

A man creeps out of the seat and the door opens and the figures head appears over the hood of his car. My heart nearly explodes.

It’s Aiden.

“Chase!” I scream.

“Brynn. I just came to see you,” he says. His voice cracks. His eyes are sunken and he paces towards me around the car. The headlights fill the side of his face. His hair is frizzy and he hasn’t shaven in weeks. “You don’t have to scream like that,” he says in a forced, watery smile.

I want to back away from him slowly or run up the steps to Chase’s apartment, but I can’t move. Every bone refuses to move no matter how hard I tell myself to run. A chill covers the back of my neck.

“Aiden...what are you doing here?” My teeth chatter.

“I came to see you.” He places his hands on his head and grabs a fist full of his hair. “I just want to finish what we started.” He laughs nervously. “Can we just fucking do that?” He shouts. He comes closer. No one seems to hear him shout. Not even Chase. I can’t scream. I can’t fight. I can’t do anything. I’m so fucking scared. He darts over to me and grabs me, seizing me in his clutches. I’m so frightened, I can’t move. “I just want a kiss. Just one kiss and then I’ll leave you alone.”

“Aiden, no,” I whimper I try to fight him off, but his grip tightens. I find the strength in my voice to scream. “Chase!”

“Brynn, just one kiss. One last kiss.”

I hear Chase shout and I hear footsteps scurry down the metal steps. “Brynn!” His feet sprint across the pavement. Aiden pays him no mind; he forces me up against the car, mashing my body against the cold, damp metal.

“Get your fucking hands off of her,” Chase says running to us before his fist plummets against the side of Aiden’s head. He falls to the pavement like a bag of bricks.

I back away from Aiden and get behind Chase, shielding me. “Who the fuck is this? Why is he here?”

I try to catch my breath, I’m almost hyperventilating. “He’s been stalking me.”

Aiden struggles to sit up, groggily shaking his head, trying to maintain his consciousness. “You had enough asshole? Huh?” Chase yells. “You like stalking girls?”

“Fuck you,” Aiden says trying to put intimidation in his voice. He stands up squaring off with Chase. “I only wanted a kiss goodbye.” He puts his hands up, palms facing us. “I don’t want any trouble. I’ll be on my way.” He rubs his head, wincing. He walks back to his car, pausing in between the two beams of fluorescent light. “In case you didn’t know, whoever you are young man,” he pauses and grins to himself, “she’s amazing at giving head.”

I blink and Chase catches Aiden’s face with a straight right hand to his nose, knocking him back to the ground. Chase jumps on top of him, pummeling him. Speckles of blood fly into the air as Aiden howls for mercy. His howls turn to murmurs then to gurgling as Chase is grunting and giving him blow after blow, not letting up.

Blue and red lights peel around the corner in a fury. I dart over to Chase and try to pull him off of Aiden. I fly backwards as I’m hit by the force of Chase’s stray elbow to my thigh. The adrenaline has taken ahold of him; I can’t get a grip on him. “Chase! Please, that’s enough!” He can’t hear the cop car, he can’t hear me and he can’t hear Aiden screaming for his life.

At that moment I realize I’m moments from seeing Chase kill Aiden with his bare hands. I wrap my elbow around Chase’s neck, ripping him from Aiden’s lifeless body.

“I’m gonna fucking kill you! You fucking put your hands on her!” I manage to pull Chase a few feet from Aiden’s limp body. Spit flies from Chase’s mouth and his shirt is covered in blood as well as his hands are doused in it. His arms and legs are still violently flailing around, desperately trying to inflict pain on Aiden.

“Chase it’s over! It’s over!” His entire body shakes as he rests between my legs, breathing frantically.

“I’ll fucking kill you! Hear me?! Hear me you scum piece of shit?!”

“Chase! Chase!” I smack his cheek and lower my voice “Look at me. Look at me. Baby, it’s me. Chase, it’s me.” His face flashes around to look at me, his face, glaring pale. “Baby, it’s over. It’s over.” He eyes, wide open. Stark green, but full of merciless fire.

An officer creeps around the car, gun drawn. He sees us two and puts his gun away. He looks down at Aiden squirming and repeating help me, help me over and over. His face a bloody mess. The officer kneels down and surveys Aiden. He goes back into his car and barks something into his radio about needing medical attention.

“I got a call from a disturbance in the area. An assault.”

“There wasn’t an assault Mr. Officer. That man,” I say pointing to the lifeless bloody body on the ground, “has been stalking me. He followed me here and put his hands on me. He saved me.

“Saved you?” The officer says looking back down at Aiden. “I’m going to have to place this man under arrest. That man needs serious medical attention.”

“No, please officer! He was protecting me. Please, you can’t do this.”

Chase stands up, assuming the position, giving the officer no resistance. With a calm, but scowled face, he places his hand behind his head and the officer handcuffs him dragging him to the back of the squad car.

“No! You can’t.” My tears aren’t enough to prevent seeing Chase in steel bracelets behind a cage in a cop car.

The paramedics come and place Aiden on the stretcher.

The officer comes to me and says with a stern voice, “You’re going to need to follow me down to the station for questioning.” I nod wiping away my tears.

“This is crazy. He didn’t do anything. He saved me. He protected me.”

“Does that look like protection to you?” he says nodding to the medics sliding Aiden’s body into the ambulance.
