The room waited with bated breath for Gwen to make her announcement. Rachel was eating a piece of chocolate cake. She was one of the few in the room who wasn’t going to be surprised. Of course she’d also told Clint while they were on their honeymoon. He’d surprised her with a quick trip to Hawaii for a week, then promised that they’d have an even bigger trip around Halloween and one more after Christmas.
Gwen finally told her big secret. “We’re having twin girls!”
The room broke out into spontaneous applause and everyone rushed to hug Gwen and Dom. Rachel was glad she and Clint had made it back in time for the Cates’ baby shower. Gwen looked like she was ready to pop any day, even though she still had three months to go. Rachel expected her to be put on bed rest very soon. Technically, her doctor had already recommended that she stay off her feet as much as possible. That was how the twins’ wife had gotten a part-time job taking over for Gwen.
Everyone was mingling around and talking when Clint slipped his hands around Rachel’s waist and pulled her to rest against him. “Should we have a party when we get our son or daughter? What’s the adoption party etiquette? It seems a little strange to just show up with a kid one day.”
“Good question. I’ve never thought about that. I’ll ask the adoption group what to do.” Rachel had started hanging out in forums online devoted to parents who adopted shifter children. She had been surprised to find a small but very supportive community there.
“You guys are going to adopt?” Dawn Brooks asked. She was feeding cake to her nephew at the table next to Clint and Rachel. She was Owen’s youngest sister and a very sweet girl.
“We are.” Rachel put her finger to her lips and winked. “It’s a secret, though. Don’t tell anyone. We don’t even have an attorney to help us with the process yet.”
“You guys must really like kids.” Dawn made a face as Patrick smashed cake into his face twice before finding his mouth. “I don’t know anyone who adopts while they’re pregnant. That’s just like having twins. At least you and Gwen will have something else in common.”
“We aren’t pregnant.” Rachel took the last bite of her cake. “I just look like I’m eating for two.”
“Yes, you are,” Dawn said matter-of-factly before looking up and blushing deeply. “Oh no! I did it again, didn’t I?”
Rachel dropped her plate and grabbed Clint’s hand. “Dawn, don’t you say a word to anyone. This is Gwen’s day. I don’t want to steal her thunder.”
Clint stooped to pick up Rachel’s plate. “What’s going on?”
“I don’t want you to make a big deal about this right now. Just play it cool,” Rachel instructed Clint, lowering her voice. “But I think I might be pregnant.”
Clint’s jaw twitched and he cracked a smile before returning his face to a neutral position. “Really?”
Rachel nodded, her eyes shining with tears. “I don’t want to get my hopes up, but Dawn has a legendary nose. She’s never been wrong before.”
Clint pulled Rachel in for a quick kiss. “I’m not going to make a big deal yet, I promise. Even if you aren’t pregnant, I don’t care. I still love you the same.”
Rachel couldn’t wait to leave and get to a drugstore, but she was trying not to get her hopes up either. She had a feeling that Dawn was right. She’d been starving in the last few weeks since the wedding and her already large chest seemed to be getting even bigger.
Even if she was wrong, it would be alright. She already had the most wonderful husband in the world. She didn’t need anything else to be happy. A surprise baby would only be the icing on an already delicious cake. Whatever her future held it was going to wonderful with Clint at her side.
