Laurel’s admiration for her boss, Shane, has gone overboard into a dangerous place; love. She’s watched and wanted him for over three years, time and women passing through his life, including his short lived second marriage. Playful office antics created out of frustration, set in motion the blurring of lines between assistant and her employer. Does it stop there, or will Shane be able to show Laurel she’s not the only one with an obsession?

Chapter 1

I
swayed on my feet, my eyelids heavy and drifting closed. At just after seven in the morning, I was standing at the coffee maker in the break room, trying not to fall asleep where I stood. Coffee was my best friend in the mornings. It had to be with the few restless hours of sleep I managed to get every night. If I’d taken any other job, I could have gotten more, but instead, I chose the position of assistant; aka go-fer, retriever, and receiving end of bad moods.

I slumped down in one of the chairs, yawning so loud it seemed to reverberate off the cabinets. The office was pretty much empty at that hour, to which I was thankful.

“Rough night?” Carrie asked, rounding the corner into the break room. She must have smelled the coffee and had come running as soon as she was off the elevator.

I gave her a weak smile and rolled my shoulders to try and wake my body up while stifling another yawn. “Who?
Me
?”

“Yes,
you
, silly.” She plopped down next to me, giving me a nudge as we watched the pot fill. “That ass of a boss of yours sending you home with more than your fair share of work again?”

“I have no idea who you could be referring to.” My voice was heavy with sarcasm; heavier than my lethargic body.

“Oh, yeah, because that saint you’ve been working for nonstop since you graduated three years ago – he’s never into dumping too much work on you. You know, the one with the gorgeous eyes, tight fucking perfect ass, and who yells louder than a screaming jet passing by –
that
asshole.” She chuckled. “Ring any bells?”

“Unfortunately, he rings too
many
bells.” I shrugged and stood, noticing the coffee was almost done, and grabbed the sugar.

Carrie was the only one I could confide in at the office about my boss, Shane Winthrop; the man I was stupidly in love with.

It wasn’t supposed to happen, but they always say you can’t help who it happens with. My beef was why did it have to be the unattainable?

“And you’re one to talk. Your boss is the same."

“Yeah, but I stand up to him. It makes no sense to me the way you drool over that bastard, but then, hey,” she leaned into the fridge and pulled out the creamer, “I slept with my college professor, so what the hell do I know?”

I snorted. “How is that douche you were dating…Todd, was it? Still seeing him?”

She frowned and leaned back against the counter. “You still pretending you’re not salivating over Shane each time he calls you into his office?” I remained silent, and she continued, “Yeah, I thought so. We’re both a wreck when it comes to men.” She poured some creamer into her cup, then into mine as I pulled the coffee pot off the burner. “So, the answer to your question is
yes
. I’m stupid, and still seeing Todd, even though he doesn’t deserve me.”

I snuffed out a laugh, sighing with the realization that I needed to get over him. “I’m way more screwed up than you’ll ever be.”

“Just because Shane’s the Vice President, handling the company’s mergers and acquisitions, on the road to becoming CEO in no time? Sounds like the perfect catch to me.” She winked at me.

“What do I have, to tempt his twice divorced, thirty-eight-year-old perfect ass, who’s married to his job? I live in his shadow. He never sees me.” My eyes stung and threatened to water at the admission.

She narrowed her eyes at me. “What are you talking about?” She set her mug back down and gripped my arm. “I hate hearing you get down on yourself. You think you’re nothing to him, yet wife number two was
convinced
you were his mistress. So, that means it’s obvious she saw something between you two.”

I shook my head and my mouth opened to protest, but she held up her hand to stop me, letting go of her grip on me in the process. I slumped into the counter.

“You are not just the girl who does all of his bidding in the office. I don’t care if he was calloused enough to have
you
find him a divorce lawyer.” She let go of my arm. “If that doesn’t scream interested, then I don’t know what does. He was practically begging you to end his misery, get him out of that trap of a marriage, and come running to his bed.”

“Whatever,” I said, shoving off the counter, my stomach tied in knots. “I don’t know where you get these crazy ideas, but he’s never even looked at me when we’re in meetings together.”

I said goodbye, unable to talk about him anymore, grabbed my coffee and headed back to my desk.

I sat in my chair, trying to get her words out of my head. My eyes closed, and I rested my forehead on my palms, muttering to myself, “She has no idea what she’s talking about. Just forget about it…”

Standing next to me, he was an imposing force, making me feel small and insignificant in his shadow. I was the woman few even realized was sitting next to him; Shane’s presence was that strong. Then again, it was also my place.

“Laurel?”

I jumped, surprised by his voice calling me from behind.

“Y-yes?”

I turned to find him stifling a laugh at my over-reaction, a sexy smirk forming on his perfect full lips. It always turned me into a pile of goo when he did that.

His blue eyes were dancing in amusement; strong jaw littered with a day’s worth of stubble. The man filled out his suit in all the right ways. Why did he have to be so good looking?

“Little squirrel scared?”

And then his mouth opened, reminding me that many times I loathed him as much as I loved him.

I pulled myself together, changing my unamused glare to a sweet smile, hiding my annoyance as best as I could. “What can I help you with, sir?”

A sly smile formed, and my whole body slouched. That look always signaled bad news for me.

“Do not disturb. Not for anything or anyone.”

My brow scrunched. It was an odd request from him. “Sir?”

He shook his head. “No one. I’ve got a lot on my desk and in my email. There’s a ton I have to get done today. I need you to keep people away from me and re-schedule my appointment with Welch and Rochester.”

My brain tried to recall if there was any tequila left in my fridge, because it was going to be a big margarita night.

With great reluctance, I nodded in understanding, while in my mind I was throwing my stapler at his head. I could even envision the red welt and bump that would form on his forehead. It took all of my effort to fight off a wicked smile.

An hour later, I was tearing my hair out. I had to deal with an angry ex-wife, half of the legal team, and the grueling task of rescheduling an appointment that had been cancelled three times previous. Granted, there was just one that was our fault. That didn’t make the conversation any easier.

By the forth message on top of everything else, I got fed up, and decided to let my boss have it.

In the form of post-it notes.

He’s the one who said he didn’t want to be disturbed for anything. With pen in hand, and a bright yellow pad, I wrote down all schedule changes, messages, who stopped by, etc. Then I plastered them all over his door a few at a time.

By lunch, the entire mid-section of the solid oak door was covered. I smirked every time I looked up, giggling on the inside while I wondered if I’d gone too far. One in particular stood out in big bold letters that said “Give Laurel a raise.”

I doubted he would look at them, but hoped he’d at least laugh at my attempt. I loved the sound, and it was heard too little. It always sent my heart racing and goose bumps flashing across my skin.

Fuck, how did he do that to me?

Shane’s door was open when I came back from a restroom break, and I didn’t see him inside. I leaned over my computer to pull up the schedule to see how much time I had to grab lunch. Numbers ran through my head; I had forty minutes. Plenty of time to stop at the deli in the lobby.

A hand landed next to mine on the desk top. I felt the heat radiating from his body before he spoke, resisting the urge to back up into him. “Aw, squirrel, were you angry at me?”

When I turned he stepped back, grinning down at me, and sitting on the edge of my desk in a casual manner. The atmosphere was playful, making the urge very strong to grab his head and pull his lips down to mine.

“Just feeling a little underappreciated.”

He leaned forward, moving his lips close to my ear, making my skin prickle and my body shift closer to him. “Perhaps I need to show you just how much I need you, Laurel.”

I froze, solid as a marble statue at the double entendre, lacing his smooth spoken words. There was even an emphasis on the word “need” that made my knees week and my panties flood. I blinked up at him, heat washing over my face, my mouth opening and closing with no sound coming out.
