"
VERDICT
Compelling, action-packed, and threaded through with relentless evil, smoldering sexuality, and dynamic magic, this story engages readers from the get-go and doesn't let them come up for air until the end. Latest in Perry's 'Guardians of Destiny' series, this title is complete in itself, though readers will enjoy the earlier books, as well." (

"Settle in, as the Guardians of Destiny are back for round three in Perry's exhilarating series. There is sadness and a dark loneliness to this heroine, which Perry shakes up by setting her on a collision course with a by-the-rules homicide investigator. Perry's storytelling skills just keep getting better and better!" (

"Kate Perry's third book in the Guardians of Destiny Series, TEMPTED BY FATE, was a kick ass romance from beginning to end. Willow and Rick have great chemistry and the world Perry has created has shown the depth of each character in such a way that you know them better than some of your friends. This book rocked as a standalone but was even better after I went out and bought the first two books in the Guardian of Destiny Series. My only complaint is having to wait for the next book." (

THE COLD SNAP OF STEEL ON WILLOW’S WRIST MADE HER FALTER.

Yanking her against him, Ramirez clicked the handcuffs shut on the other wrist. “You’re not going anywhere, Willow Tarata.”

She pressed herself against Ramirez. The better to distract him.

His body reacted to hers instantly. Unfortunately, her body reacted, too.

His arms tightened on her. Wrapping his hand in her hair, he arched her back until his eyes filled her vision. His energy surrounded her, trying to drug her and pull her under. Focused on her lips, he lowered his head, stopping a breath away. She waited, unable to breathe.

His mouth parted, hovering just above hers. “ ‘You have the right to remain silent.’ ”

She let a kittenish smile curve her lips. “I’m sure I couldn’t be able to keep quiet.”

“ ‘Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.’ ”

“I’d rather you be used against me.”

“Stop it.” His jaw tightened.

But she noticed he didn’t push her away…

Legacy of the Guardians of Destiny

C
enturies ago, in a time before man fought his wars with iron and steel, a group of monks lived in peaceful seclusion in a monastery in Southeast China. They studied nature and its wonders, ever fascinated with the world in which they existed. Joyfully, they welcomed anyone within their fold who showed similar interest and piety.

As time passed, man changed. Instead of coveting knowledge, man coveted power. Instead of revering earth and its bounty, man revered its riches.

For ages, the monks remained untouched by avarice and corruption, but eventually the chaotic world encroached on their tranquil one. Neighboring gangs besieged and battered them, for no reason other than to wreak havoc.

And so to protect their way of life, the holy men developed an art of war. As there were five elements in Chinese cosmology, they created five correlating fighting principles, documented in five scrolls. One scroll for each element: earth, fire, wood, metal, water.

Over time, the monks became so adept at harnessing the elements that they developed other abilities. Each element had its own set of powers, and each secret was recorded in the scrolls for future generations to learn.

Tales of the extraordinary leaked through the provinces, until they reached the ears of one particularly ruthless overlord.

Amazed, he journeyed to the monastery to begin his own study.

The monks were impressed by the man’s seemingly pious mien, but one, Wei Lin, saw within the overlord’s heart to the truth: the man coveted the sacred scrolls and their ability to unlock the mysteries of nature and man. To possess the scrolls was to possess unlimited potential for power.

To protect the world from the overlord’s greed, Wei Lin stole the scrolls from the monastery and left under the cover of night.

For decades, he searched before he found five families worthy enough to guard them. One family for each scroll, led by men so virtuous they could resist the temptation to harness the powers for their own gain.
