Tears pricked the corner of my eyes. This was the best conversation I had ever had with my mother, and it was in the lobby of the University of Washington Medical Center. “Enough of that. I’d like to show my face here in the future.”
“Oh, Kitty! You worry too much what people think.”
I gave her a sardonic look, and she winked back at me.
“Mom, how would you like to have dinner with Adam and me one night this week?” I asked.
Her eyes lit up. “I can’t think of anything I would rather do.”
“How about I call you?”
“Sounds perfect. I’ll be looking forward to your call.”
I smiled and started to turn away. “We’ll talk soon, Mom.”
She nodded and gave a little wave as I walked away. When I turned back once I reached the doors, she was still watching me leave. I realized the feeling I felt right then was what a mother’s love felt like. There was nothing in the world like it.
Strong arms wrapped around me while warm lips descended on my neck. “You all right?” Maverick’s deep voice asked quietly in my ear.
“I’m better than all right. I’m amazing,” I told him, repeating the word my mother used to describe me. The best part? This time, even I believed it.
