Epilogue

T
wo weeks later Yelena propped her head up on her elbow, dragging the bed sheet up over her breasts with a satisfied sigh.

“That had to be the best lunch break ever.”

In her bed Alex lay beside her on his back, sweaty and replete from their furious lovemaking. He laughed, a deep joyful sound that prompted her to join in. When their laughter finally faded, she placed a hand on his chest. The hot, tempered skin over corded muscle felt delicious. And it was all hers.

From their pile of clothes on the floor came a muffled ringtone.

“Yours,” Yelena said, then after a confused pause, “and mine?”

“Sounds like it,” Alex said, throwing off the sheet before getting to his feet. Yelena’s mouth went dry. Her gaze brushed over his wide shoulders, down the smooth muscular back, tapering waist and beautifully curved buttocks before ending at the pair of extremely masculine legs.

A glorious sight indeed.

“You gonna get that?” Alex said, plucking the phone out of his jacket.

“Mmm-hmm.”

“Yelena.” The exasperation in his glance was tempered with mischief. “Your phone.”

With a sigh, she pulled the sheet around her, left the warm bed and rummaged through her clothes on the floor.

“Hello?”

When she hung up, Alex was sat on the edge of her bed, a pair of cotton boxers spoiling her view. But the wide grin on his face compensated for all that.

“That was Mum. The Director of Public Prosecutions is willing to make a deal.”

Her heart swelled as she padded over to him, tossing her phone on the bed. “Really? What’s going to happen?”

His hands shot out, grabbing the front of her sheet. Slowly he pulled and she ended up wedged between his powerful thighs. “Her attorney’s going to explain everything tomorrow but the bottom line is no jail time. The DPP is reluctant to try such a high-profile case that involves long-term spousal abuse.”

The flinch barely reached his eyes but Yelena still saw it. She gently cupped his rough face in her hands. “That’s wonderful. I’m so happy for her. And for you.”

She leaned down. His lips were warm and pliant, meeting hers eagerly, and slowly they explored each other, soft flesh testing and tasting, breath merging as the kiss lengthened then deepened.

When his tongue tangled with hers, her blood went from languid lethargy to full boil. She’d never get enough of this, this glorious heat that only Alex seemed to arouse.

His arms encircled her waist, hands questing, and soon the sheet fell in a pool at her feet. Rough palms met her bottom and he gave an appreciative murmur.

“Alex?” she got out as his lips moved from her mouth to her neck.

“Mmm?”

“Don’t you want to know about my call?”

Alex pulled her sharply up against him and was rewarded with her sudden gasp, one that eased into a groan as he leaned in and slid his mouth over one nipple.

He grinned against her silken skin. “Not really.”

“It was—” he nipped at the hard pebbled nub and she gasped “—Jonathon.”

He muttered something unintelligible, his mouth full of hot flesh. As the blood sped through every vein, stirring his manhood, he swept his palms over the twin globes of her butt.

Beautiful, just beautiful. And she was all his.

“I quit.”

“Okay.” He left her bottom, making his way up over her hips, the gentle indentation of her waist, her torso until—

She pulled back, his face firmly in her hands. “Specifically I quit your campaign.”

He frowned, embers of desire burning the edges of his concentration. “What? Why?”

“Because a partner who sleeps with the clientele isn’t the right image for Bennett & Harper.”

“They didn’t approve.” His hands fell.

“No. So I quit.”

He blinked, confused by her wide grin. “But you wanted that promotion.”

Her expression softened. “But I want you more. And I actually like the idea of being my own boss.”

His arms snaked back around her waist. “Say that again.”

“I said, I’m going to start my own PR co—”

He pulled and she crashed into his chest, her hands
instinctively going out to temper the fall. But he quickly rolled and suddenly she was under him on the bed.

“And I want you.”

Her mouth tweaked in impish delight. “So you’d better do something now you’ve got me.”

Alex kissed her until they were both flustered and aroused, until his body screamed for release and his blood echoed loud and fast in his ears. He groaned when she took his earlobe between her teeth, gently nibbling.

Then Yelena said, “And one more thing. It arrived today.”

She heard his breath snag. She didn’t need to elaborate: reaching over to pull the large envelope from her night stand was explanation enough.

She repositioned the sheet around her body, took a cross-legged seat on the bed and offered the envelope. “Do you want to open it?”

He stared at her, his expression jumbled. Slowly he nodded, took the envelope, ripped it open and unfolded the contents in silence. Yelena fiddled with her necklace, chewing on her bottom lip as he read.

“Well?” she said after a moment. “What does it say?”

“Hang on.”

She waited a few more impatient seconds. “Well?”

Shocked, Alex looked up, eyes wide as everything ground to a whirling halt. “Bella is mine.”

Joy and amazement bubbled up in Alex’s chest, widening his mouth, making his face ache with a broad grin. How many times had he wished he could rewind time, change the past? Yet for all those hollow wishes, everything from his rollercoaster life had brought him to this one amazing moment.

“So you’re happy,” she said slowly.

His joyous shout startled her, making him laugh. “Yelena, love, I am thrilled beyond words.”

He grabbed her and planted a deep, warm kiss on her
mouth, his breath quickening when she responded without hesitation.

Then he pulled back, brushed the hair from her eyes. “I love you, Yelena.”

“And I love you.”

“You know what would make this moment perfect?”

Her dark eyes practically twinkled. “Food?”

“No.” He chuckled. “I was thinking more along the lines of ‘let’s get married’ but I guess I could go a burger or—”

“Are you serious?” Her eyes rounded in a way that made his groin tighten in excited expectancy.

He grinned. “Yeah, I’m actually pretty hungry.”

“Alex!” She thumped him on the shoulder, way too soft to do any kind of damage. Then she continued, more soberly. “My brother was out to ruin you. My family staged an intervention, remember?”

He cupped her cheek in his palm, savoring the feel of her soft, warm flesh in his. “And I am stunned and humbled that you chose me.”

“It wasn’t difficult.” And, Yelena realized as she gazed into his eyes, it was the truth. Since their ultimatum, the Valeros had at first tried to lay down the law, alternately threatening then cajoling. At her impassive silence, they’d grudgingly agreed to announce Gabriela’s death if she’d reconsider her stance. Yelena had thanked them and offered to write the release but on everything else she refused to bend.

Alex was all she’d ever wanted.

“So isn’t it about time you became part of my family?”

The pure, unadulterated love radiating from him choked the very breath from her lungs. Was it possible to have too much joy?

Slowly she leaned forward, kissed him gently on the lips.

“I love you, Alex. I’d marry you tomorrow if we could.”

He grabbed her, his murmur of triumph warm against her mouth. “I'm sure we can work something out.”

As desire swiftly rushed in, Yelena realized that throughout every trial she’d faced, every hardship, fantasies still came true. And then all thought fled as Alex proceeded to show her a few of his own.
