Chapter Three: Angels in the Sky
Drew was at a loss for words. Her mother had just dropped a bombshell on her and she was still trying to come to grips with what she had to tell her. Drew had just gotten back from a backpacking trip in Europe for the last three months and a lot had changed since she had first left at the beginning of summer. The main thing was her mother was getting married and they would be moving across the state to live with him and his son, who was about her age.
With only a week’s notice before the wedding, Drew didn’t know what to think. She wondered what was so special about this guy that after all those years she said she would never marry again, she was doing just that.
“Drew are you even listening to me?”
“Yes mom. So when do I get to meet this new love of your life?”
“Don’t say it like that. You will meet him tonight but Lars won’t be back till the weekend right before the wedding.”
“Lars? What kind of name is Lars?”
“Be nice. You are too old to be acting like a child about it Drew.”
Drew sighed and knew that she was right. It was one thing to act that way when she was younger, but when it came to her mother dating, she hadn’t liked any of his boyfriends and she doubted that she was going to like the new one. “So what is his name?”
“Charles.”
“Charles and Lars?”
Christine’s face scrunched up and Drew tried to ignore it. She put her fork down and took a drink of her wine. “So are we really moving then?”
“Yeah. We need to be out by next week, so your brother is going to help us get packed up and moved. You would love the new house, it is huge.”
“Oh you got you a rich man did ya?”
“Yes, he is, but he is really sweet. I met him at work. He came in for a cleaning and we got to talking. I know I said I would never get married again, but Charles is different than all the rest. You will see. He is excited to meet you and I know you guys are going to get along famously.”
Drew nodded, but she wasn’t so sure that it would happen the way her mother imagined it.
“As long as you are happy mom. That is all that matters to me. The last few guys were jerks, so anything has to be better than Randy.”
Christine made a face. “Don’t even remind me. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
“Me either.”
Her mother didn’t have the best luck with men and it seemed like the older she got, the worse they got. If Charles was rich, Drew figured he was going to be a complete jerk. But she would hold her judgment as long as she could. Drew wanted to meet him with an open mind, even if she already thought she knew what he would be like.
“Well if we are moving next week, I guess I will go ahead and start packing. Not really what I was expecting for my first day back.”
“I know sweetie, but I didn’t want to call you while you were in Europe and have you worrying about it.”
“I love you and I am glad you found someone to love you. You deserve to be happy. I am sure he will be just as wonderful as you think he is.”
“That’s as good as it is going to get from you, so I will take it. Just keep an open mind. I am sure you will get along.”
“Does he only have the one son?”
“Yeah we each have one. Lars is in college, but I think he is a year older than you. He graduates this year with a business degree. He will go into his father’s business and then Charles will step down. When he does, I am retiring and we are going to travel for a while.”
“Taking a page out of my book huh?”
Christine nodded. “It’s embarrassing when your daughter has been more places than you.”
“Well you would have loved it, but I know you had work to do. Aren’t you glad you didn’t go? You may not have ever met him if not.”
She agreed, but she had thought about going with her daughter when she took off to Europe. Christine had always wanted to go to Paris and London, but she had work to do and there was no way she could just take off for three months. There were too many bills to pay. The idea of not worrying about it was something she had never experienced before Charles. He didn’t worry about money, much like those that had it. Charles came from a wealthy family and she wondered sometimes why he wanted her out of all the women he could have. It made her feel special and the way he touched her made her feel like the only woman in the world.
“It’ll all work out, just wait and see. This is going to be a new life for both of us and I have a surprise for you, but Charles wants to be the one to tell you tonight.”
Drew had no idea what she was talking about, but she nodded and told her that she would be down in a few hours. Drew cleared her plates and Christine’s from lunch and put them in the dishwasher. “I’m going up to my room to pack. Do you have any extra boxes?”
She looked around the half-packed kitchen and her mother handed her a couple of boxes. Going upstairs, she took her backpack off and the clothes she had traveled in. If she hadn’t been starving from the long plane ride, she would have been in the shower as soon as she got home. Looking around her room, she grabbed some clothes and a towel and headed to the bathroom.
The two women had lived in the house for over ten years and though they only rented, it had been home for Drew most of her life. She still lived at home to help her mother with bills and so she didn’t have to work as much for her tuition costs. The idea of leaving the house on Pleasant St. made her sad and she hoped that it worked out with her mom and Charles. If not, they would have to find another place and it would never be as good as where they were.
Christine was not known to have the best taste in men and she really hoped that she had finally found her a good one. Charles sounded like the opposite of her last few boyfriends, so she hoped that it would be a good thing. Sighing to herself, she showered and started packing her room up when she got out. Drew had a feeling that it was never going to be the same again.
The evening arrived and Drew had managed to pack up most of her closet and all the things that she wouldn’t need for the next week or two. It felt strange to her when she looked back at the naked room. Drew walked downstairs and found Christine doing the same thing in the living room. Drew helped her with the stacks of books on the shelves, placing them in boxes and stacking them up.
“I’m glad you’re back home Drew. It has been different since you have been away.”
“I missed home too. It is going to be strange moving from here. This has been our home since you and dad split up.”
“I know honey, but this is a good thing.”
“I’m happy for you. You have a look in your eyes that I haven’t seen in a while. You look happy again and I like Charles already, if not for that reason alone.”
She gave her a hug and then Drew told her to go get ready. They were supposed to meet him at a restaurant that she had never heard of before.
“So where is Bontley’s at anyways?”
“It’s in Chicago.”
“Um, what do you mean?”
“We are just going to fly over. Charles has a jet, you will love it.”
“What do you mean he has a jet?” Drew looked at her like she was crazy.
“I told you he was wealthy.”
“You didn’t say he was, have your own jet rich. Jeez mom.”
Christine smiled. “What? Does it really matter?”
“I guess not, but at least I know I am going to have a really nice room now.”
The two headed out and Drew was glad that she had said something before, because even with the foreknowledge, it was still strange to drive up to an air strip in the middle of nowhere and fly off to the other side of the country, just to go to dinner. Charles was trying to impress her and it had worked. Christine was right and the two had a lot to talk about. Their thirst for travel was one and the same and they both been through much of Europe.
“I just have to convince your mother to go with me.”
“She will, especially if she is traveling in this kind of style. It sure beats backpacking.”
“It does, but I remember my first trip to Europe and it was the best time. I only had a little money and we saw it all.”
Drew nodded, jealous of the places he had seen. She would one day, she told herself. The flight was quicker than any she had been on before. As she looked out the window, Drew was surprised to see the city light getting closer beneath her. “Are we already here?”
“A lot quicker when you don’t have to go through all the red tape huh?”
“I’d say. It took me 4 hours to get home from Chicago.”
Drew watched the two intermingle and Christine was beaming. It was going to be okay and she started to warm up to the idea that it was going to be different. The idea didn’t seem so bad.

The plane touched down and the trio got off. There was a car waiting for them, as well as a table when they got there. Everything was different than what she had experienced before. It was clear that Charles got what he wanted, wherever he went. It was all so seamless, like they knew what he wanted.
Drew enjoyed the evening and she left feeling a whole lot better about it all. She still had her reservations about her new brother, but she figured that if he was anything like Charles then they would all get along fine. Lars stayed with his father sometimes, but it seemed that he had another residence in New York for business. As Charles stepped down from the responsibilities, Lars would be going to the main firm in California where they were. Until he found his own place, it seemed that Lars would be there more than usual. With that in mind, she hoped they could get along.
While Charles was great and the evening was something she hadn’t experienced before, she tried to imagine how she was going to fit into all of that. Would she really leave her job at the diner to go home to a mansion? It didn’t make sense to her and she tried to reconcile it in her mind.
“So what did you think?”
Drew turned her head and smiled at her. “He was really nice, you were right. I do like him and you two are so cute together. But when am I going to get to meet the son?”
“I don’t know. He is supposed to be in this weekend and Charles was thinking about having some people over to welcome you home. His family is going to be there, so you will get to meet them all. You will also get to see your new room and all of that.”
“Okay. That sounds good. Have you met Lars?”
“Well of course. He is a lot like his father and I swear they could be twins.”
Drew nodded her head. Charles was quite handsome, dark and mysterious looking. There was an air of confidence that only a man that could buy a small country could own. She could see how it would easily turn into something else though. Drew just hoped that her brother wasn’t a jerk. She had never really liked rich men for that reason. They always thought that they could just take what they wanted.
She assured herself that she was just working herself up for nothing. Drew was a worrier and it was something that she wished she could turn off.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing, just wondering what Lars will be like. Just trying to figure out how this is going to work.”
“You always did worry too much Drew. It is going to be okay hon.”
