Angela went about getting herself ready for bed. She put away the groceries she had bought earlier, took a shower and changed into a long black satin nightie she had from her days of being a rich man’s wife. She was on her way up her steps to her bedroom with a plate of strawberries and cheese when there was a banging on her front door.

BANG, BANG, BANG

“AHH,” she screamed dropping her plate.

BANG BANG BANG

“ANGIE, OPEN THE DOOR!!!” Julian yelled from the other side of the door.

CHAPTER 7

“JULIAN?” she yelled still terrified that someone was banging on her front door at one o’clock in the morning.

“Yes, open the door!” he said.

Angela grabbed her door knob yanking the door open forgetting she was still only in her nightie. Julian walked past her into the house as soon as she opened the door.

“Julian, have you…?” she started to say but was cut off.

“Is he still here or can we talk?” he said abruptly.

“What?” she said confused as to who HE was and why the hell the “talk” could not wait until a decent hour.

“You heard me. Is he here? Is he still in your bed?” he said. They had managed to end up in her living room through all the commotion. Julian was fuming; Angela had never seen him angry. ‘Why is he so hot to me right now?’ she was thinking.

But she did not follow those thoughts.  Instead she said, “Julian, you have about five seconds to tell me what you are talking about before I kick you out of my…”  Angela started to say, but was cut off by Julian grabbing her and forcing her against the wall as he leaned in and kissed her. It started out as a hot, hard kiss and ended up has a leisurely, ardent, stimulating coupling of their lips. Angela was taken by surprise.  Initially she fought his tongue entering her mouth, but with his soft sensual lips pressed against hers, she could not resist anymore. Angela relaxed against him. His lips were firm yet tender and his tongue probed the inside of her mouth. The kiss deepened and Angela could feel his hands move along her body. First sliding down her side to her hips then back up to her chest where he cupped her right breast while his other hand kept her pinned closely to him. Julian placed his hands on her hips and gently squeezed them wanting more.

Suddenly Julian broke the kiss and looked at her for a moment. Both of them reeling from the kiss, they stood there without speaking trying to catch their breath.

“I...I...I’m sorry,” Julian said stepping back from her. Angela was still glued to the wall.

‘Did he just kiss me?’ she was thinking.  As pissed off as she was that he had just barged into her house at one o’clock in the morning yelling at her, she couldn’t focus on the anger because the desire and pleasure of the kiss had been more than she could have ever imagined and she had imagined it more than once.

“Angie, I am really, really sorry,” Julian stammered. “Are you ok?”

He was stepping close to her but stopped when she moved away from the wall and held her arm up to indicate to him he needed to keep his distance. She walked over to her fireplace putting at least ten feet between them.

‘Julian, you asshole, you probably just terrified her,’ he thought.

“I am fine,” she said quietly with her back to him.  “The question is ‘what is your problem?’ and the answer better be really good,” she finished turning back toward him with her arms crossed.

Running his hands over his head, Julian started to pace back and forth looking at the floor. “I don’t know. I was so frustrated that you cancelled on me at the last minute and then I saw him with you, touching you, kissing you and I just lost it, I guess,” he said.

Angela stood looking at him for a moment; the look on her face spoke volumes.

“Ok, first I am a big enough to apologize for the last minute notice for dinner especially since it was to thank you for helping me out,” Angela said.

The longer she spoke the more irritated she was getting.

“But why would you care who I was with and what we were doing? That is none of your business. Wait, did you say you saw me? Are you sitting in your window watching your neighbors like a little old lady named Sally Mae?”

Julian stopped abruptly in his pacing and looked at her. They both stared at each other shocked before they started to roar with laughter.

“Umm… Who is Sally Mae?” Julian said.

“You know what I mean,” she said to him. “What is going on with you?”

“I don’t know,” he said shrugging. “I guess I was jealous.”

“Of what?” Angela said to him. She sat down on the couch finally realizing she was only in her nightie.

Julian sighed and said, “I have been trying to get your attention for months. Just when I thought I was getting close, I see you with another man with his hands all over you.”

“Wait!” Angela said. “You have been trying to get my attention?”

Julian could see that she was genuinely shocked. Julian walked over to the couch and sat down next to her. He hesitated a little at first, making sure it was ok. She didn’t protest so he sat down.

“Really, Angie?” he said to her. “You didn’t realize I liked you? Scratch that; you didn’t think you were all I thought about all the time every day?”

Angela sat there staring at him dumbfounded at first, then said, “What would be my indication you were interested in me? And where does the woman that I saw you with this afternoon fit into all of this?”

“It always amazes me when men, women, and adults in general think that other people can guess what they want or are thinking.”

“Well, excuse me for trying to show you some respect and taking it slow! Also the woman you saw me with this afternoon is my sister-in-law. Maybe you should have asked before you
assumed
you knew what was going on,” Julian said.  He was starting to get pissed off. He would admit he shouldn’t have assumed she would know.   ‘But give me a break.  It’s not exactly easy to know what women are ok with and what they are not ok with these days.  They are all a mess and confusing,’ he thought.

Angela could not focus on the fact that she was being hypocritical because all she could hear is that the gorgeous woman he was having lunch with today was his sister-in-law.

‘Oh what a feeling... Toyota!’ she thought to herself. If her boobs were not so big and she did not fear knocking herself out, she would jump in the air like the people in the old commercials.

“Well, how about asking?” she said to him sarcastically.

“FINE,” he said.  “Would you go on a date with me?” He was now standing over her.

Standing up Angela said, “First, don’t you dare talk to me like that ever again. Next, no, I will not go out with you until you ask me properly.”

She stood up and walked toward her front door with him hot on her heels. Angela opened the door. “Goodnight, Julian. Come back when you are ready to treat me with the respect I not just deserve but demand!”

“Angie, wait!  I don’t want to leave with you angry at me,” Julian said. He knew he had been digging himself a hole from the moment he decided to come over.

“I am not angry with you Julian. If I was angry believe me there would not be a chance in hell that I would go out with you,” she said leaning against the door.

“I refuse to be one of those women that accept disrespect from a man because she is afraid of being alone. So if you want to ask me out, if you want us to be anything other than neighbors, you need to do it the right way, and this is not it.”

Julian was so glad that he had not lost his chance with her. He knew he should get out before he pushed her over the edge. He started to leave and stopped in front of her.

“Angie, I have nothing but respect for you, and I am going to sweep you off your feet to prove it,” he whispered before walking out.

She watched him walk down the steps and stroll next door to his house with his hands in his pockets whistling.

CHAPTER 8

“Oh thank God!” Toni shouted jumping up from her desk and doing a church praise dance as she went running over to Angela and hugging her. “I am so proud of you, Angie! Finally, you stand up for yourself and demand the love and respect you deserve,” she told her friend as she went back to her desk.

“You are completely crazy, woman,” Angela said to her.

Angela had told Toni about what had happened between her and Julian the night before.

Angela could admit in her first marriage she accepted anything Andre was willing to give her, including cheating, as long as he kept it discreet. When he had come to her saying that he might have AIDS and they both needed to be tested because he had slept with a transgender model, it had been the final straw. First, the idea of him getting AIDS because of disrespect and being irresponsible, then to know that her husband’s sexuality was in question. That was a little more than any woman should have to endure. When she had told him she wanted a divorce, he had finally admitted he was gay. With the promise that if she did not stay in the marriage and continue to be his beard, he would make sure she never got a dime of his money.

After the nightmare that her marriage had been, she had been more than happy to walk away from him and his money.

It had taken her more than two years to get out of that marriage and maintain primary custody of her daughters. Her lawyer had finally gotten her out of the prenuptial agreement with the promise to sign a confidentiality agreement about his sexuality, as if any woman wanted to go around announcing that her husband preferred men.

“You need help,” Angela said laughing at Toni and shaking her head. “Actually, I am very proud of myself.”

Angela’s mind instantly went to the feeling of Julian’s lips against hers and how soft yet firm his kiss was.

“Girl, I commend your will power because if that fine man put his lips on me, we would be naked rolling around on the floor playing Where’s Waldo in two-point-two seconds,” Toni said as she sat back down behind her desk.

“Excuse me, I have a delivery for a Ms. Angela McMillian,” a flower delivery man that had just walked in the office said to them.

“Oh! That’s me” Angela said.

Angela took the flowers which were the most beautiful Casablanca Lily’s she had ever seen. Smiling from ear to ear she signed for them and read the card. It read, “For the woman who deserves the best, J.”

“Who are they from?” Toni said smelling the flowers.  She had damn near leapt over her desk as soon as she had seen the delivery man.

Angela smiled the biggest smile she could remember smiling in her life and turned the card so that Toni could see what was written.

“HAAAAA!” Toni screamed followed by doing a church praise dance in the middle of the executive offices and shouting, “GLORY!!!”

“Shhh,” Angela said laughing.

“Wow, I have never had people be so happy to see me,” the same delivery guy was back and this time he was holding a small beautifully wrapped box.

“Ok, ain’t nobody dancing for you and how many companies do you work for?” Toni said stopping her dance and putting her hands on her hips.

Angela looked confused as she took the box he had brought to her and signed for it.

“I…. umm…” Angela started to say but something in the box made noise surprising her. She looked at the delivery man. “What is this?” she asked.

Shrugging his shoulders, he said, “I don’t know, I just deliver. I usually open up boxes when I want to know what is in them,” he said to her feigning ignorance.

“Ok, nobody likes a smart ass delivery man, sir,” Toni said. “You are the weakest link; goodbye,” she finished, shooing him out of the office as Angela untied the bow and unwrapped her box.  She was still trying to figure out what it was.

“What is it?” Toni asked. Angela pulled a black walkie-talkie out of the box.

“Hello?” the voice on the walkie-talkie crackled.

Frowning, Angela pressed the button on the walkie-talkie and said, “Hello?”

“Hello, gorgeous!” Julian said.

Angela instantly knew who it was because her stomach fell and her heart skipped a beat like she was school girl.

“Julian, what are you doing?” Angela said into the walkie-talkie.

“I am on a little reconnaissance mission,” Julian said.

Angela looked at Toni who shrugged her shoulders in confusion but watched intently like she was seeing her favorite soap opera play out in front of her.

“You’re on a what now?” Angela said.

“A reconnaissance mission,” Julian said again. “I am trying to find out the best way to ask out the fascinating, stunning, perceptive woman that lives next door to me. I was hoping you could give me some pointers.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Angela could see Toni writing on a legal pad.  When she held it up it said, “All I want to know is, how big it is.”

Waving her off Angela said, “Why not just ask her out. Women like a man that is straight forward.”

“I agree and I would except I don’t know what she likes to do. I really want to make a good first impression,” he said.

“Well, you are definitely making an impression,” Angela said smiling. “This has to be the weirdest conversation I have ever had,” she said into the walkie-talkie.

“Really? Well, I guess the tin cans with the string between them would have been weirder. I remembered you saying your boss doesn’t like it when you are on your cell phone at work. So I figured these would alleviate that problem,” Julian said.

Toni had swooned into her chair at her desk at how romantic this all was.

“Well, thank you for that consideration,” Angela said.

“So, back to this lady; what do you think I should do to get her to go on a bonafide date with me?” Julian said. Angela could hear the smile in his voice.

Julian was pacing around in the lobby of Angela’s office building praying this worked the way he wanted it to and that she did not think he was completely crazy. He was standing by a fake dogwood tree they had in the center of the lobby.  Looking around, he noticed he had gained an audience of ten to fifteen thirty to forty something women all clutching their chests as they listened to his conversation.

Julian was not sure if that was sad, but the only woman he cared about was Angela.

“Well, you could just plan the date from beginning to end without consulting her. Just let her know what to wear and go from there,” he heard Angie say. “But first you have to ask her.”

“So you’re saying I should just ask and plan? You think she will go for that?” he said.

Toni was nodding her head like a two year old and clapping. Angie laughed and said, “Nothing beats a failure but a try.”

Julian chuckled and said, “You are absolutely right.”

Angela heard the static of the walkie-talkie cut off.  Pressing the button on the side, she said, “Hello?” but heard nothing.

Just then the same delivery man came in with another small box that was beautifully wrapped. Angie signed for the box and opened it.

“So, is she your only delivery for today?” Toni said to him sarcastically.

“You know I am SHOCKED that all of this isn’t being done for you… just ASTOUNDED,” the delivery man said shaking his head.

“Your mother,” Toni said to him and they both laughed.

Angela found a beautiful formal invitation, nestled in between black tissue paper.

The invitation was a unique layered invitation, with a sheer vellum top layer featuring Julian’s initials and the bottom layer had the words:

A satin ribbon secured the top and bottom layers.

Angela could not believe what she was seeing.  This was the most beautiful and amazing thing she had ever seen. She heard the crackling of the walkie-talkie again and then heard Julian’s voice.

“Will you?” he said.

Angela was still so shocked at all of this that she looked at the delivery man and Toni for help.

“If you don’t say yes, I will,” the delivery man said.

“I am pretty sure you have too much penis for him,” Toni said to him laughing, shaking her head and laughing at the bond she had made in sarcasm with the delivery man very quickly. Pressing the button on the walking talkie, Angela took a deep breath and took the plunge.

“Yes, I will,” she said. The delivery man left the office but returned very quickly with another beautifully decorated box that was huge.

“Oh my God,” she said looking at Toni.

“Well, stop looking at me and open it!  I want to see what it is. This is too good,” she said smiling.

“Me too,” the delivery man said.

“Don’t you have something to do?” Toni said laughing.

“Not until I see what is in that box,” he said.

Angela pulled the extra-large purple ribbon and opened the lid of the box.  Inside was a Navy Sheath Column V-neck short Mini-Tulle Charmeuse cocktail dress with lace beading sequins, silver stilettos and purse to match. It was the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. The shoes and dress were exactly the right size. ‘How did he know?’ she thought smiling.

“Do you like it?” Julian said over the walkie-talkie. He was hoping that she had gotten the box open.

“Yes, it’s beautiful, Julian. But how did you know my sizes? I can’t accept this,” she said.

“WHAT?” Toni said. “Yes, she can!” she yelled but Angela was not holding the button so Julian could not hear her.

“Sweetie, I have studied your delectable curves for a long time from a distance now.  I bet I know your cup size. You already agreed to the date and the dress comes with the date. So I will see Saturday morning. Right?” he said.

Both the delivery man and Toni were nodding their heads ‘yes’.

Shaking her head and laughing to herself at how invested this delivery man had gotten in this experience, Angela pressed the button and said, “Yes.”
