Carrick Bend: When under stress pulls up into easy loops, which may be readily opened with a few light taps from a belaying pin, fid, or other implement. It may be water-soaked indefinitely, and even then it will not jam.

 

 

 

Celtic Shield Knot: Ancient knot designs thought to have had spiritually significant meanings. Continual looping of designs suggests themes of eternity and interconnectedness, and various knots have been made at one time to foil evil spirits.

 

 

 

Cross Fastenings: Used when one spar is vertical, the other horizontal.

 

 

 

Fiador Knot: Sometimes used as a hackamore or emergency bridle, although very few cowboys can tie it. Those who can might earn considerable revenue by charging for each knot made.

 

 

 

Five Strand Star Knot: A Star Knot is perhaps the most distinguished of sailors’ Button Knots, and certainly the most individual. The purpose of Multi-Strand Button Knots is to prevent unreeving. {to unreeve: to withdraw (a rope) from an opening (as a ship’s block or thimble).} Multi-Strand Knots are never untied.
