Dedication
This is dedicated to each of you who realize the power and beauty of having a dream. I'm a witness to the fact that they do indeed come true. Dream on ... and above all, make it happen.
Epigraph
I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it. And when you dream, I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it. I hope your conscience eats at you and you can't breathe without me.
—Eminem, “Stan”
Acknowledgments
God can dream a bigger dream for me, for you, than you can ever dream for yourself.
—Oprah
Hello, family!
How you doin'? (
Asked in my best Wendy Williams voice
.) Who would have thought that the shy, skinny little girl from Georgia would, as an adult, release book number eight—the one you're holding in your hands?
Believe me when I say that all I've ever wanted to do was to write entertaining stories that captivate readers and introduce them to all the imperfect characters who live in my head. That's all I've ever wanted: to have a voice. A voice that is strong, solid, and true. It means the world to me to be allowed to enter your homes, and hopefully your hearts, as I give life to my unforgettable characters, who become like family to me during the course of penning the story.
Well, my girl Pilar is back! Yeah! You, my fabulous readers, asked for another storyline centered around her, and I listened. I have to admit that Pilar has become one of my favorite characters to date. There's something exhilarating about living vicariously through the antics of a “bad girl” (this coming from the classic Goody Two-shoes, myself). Pilar is the woman you guys love to hate, but secretly root for. However, for me, Pilar is simply misunderstood (LOL).
With that said, grab your favorite snack, pour a generous glass of wine and keep the bottle within arm's reach, and get ready for a wild roller-coaster ride that you won't soon forget. Pilar is back, and she demands attention. Now, get to reading.
Before you go, I guess I had better get to thanking a few people. As always, thank you, my dear readers, for supporting and encouraging me, for reading, and for being a source of joy in my life. It has truly been a highlight of my life to meet you at book signings, literary conferences, and libraries, and on Facebook. To the book club presidents and members, you guys know I simply adore you as my literary ambassadors, who put the word out, good or bad. I've enjoyed meeting you, coming into your homes and venues over the years, and bonding through our love of reading, words, and books. Oh, and what happens at the book club meetings stays at the book club meetings
.
To my wonderful family and close friends, I love you guys, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for being my strength, my joy, my anchors, my dream encouragers, and my sounding board for this crazy journey that I've brought you along for the ride. Nelson, Brandon, Briana, Tresseler, DeJuan, Jordan, Khai, Laymon, Buffie, Pam, Audrey, Sharron, Leida, and Sandra ... thank you, thank you, thank you. Muah. Hugs and kisses.
To Portia Cannon (agent) and the Urban Books family (Carl, Natalie, and Diane), thank you for giving my “talent” a home and a platform on which to be heard.
Special thanks to my author friends and industry buddies for always being in my corner, supporting me, encouraging me, and listening to my venting (and, boy, can I vent): Cheryl, Cydney, Eric, Vincent, Marissa, GA Peach authors, and Ella. To anyone I may have missed, please charge it to my mind and not my heart.
