“It was a good fight. I was there with my friend, Crazy Horse. We did that in those days, one chief riding with another, like that. No, the Cheyenne were not at war then. But I was there with Tashunka anyway. Like I say. Like a brother.

“Those were great rifles the cowboys had. And those cattle frightened our ponies and made the hearts of Tashunka’s Sioux very bad.

“Yes, I remember Stark. He was a big man, heavy and tall, with a yellow beard, I remember, and he rode a fine bay stallion and was a brave fighter.

“I remember another man though. He had no beard and he was darkskinned, almost like an Indian. He
had pale hair, too. It was the color of dry corn leaves and covered with a big black hat. He rode in front of the cattle that day. And in front of the cowboys. Crazy Horse knew him and they shook their guns at each other before the cattle ran. That is the one I remember. That one with the big black hat.

“He was the tallest of them all…”
