“Julian.”

He looked up at her and drew a long, sharp breath as if he had been stabbed. She was conscious only of his haggardness and the blind darkness of his eyes.

She swayed nearer. He turned his face into her breast and contracted his arms like a vice about her.

Presently he stirred. “Phil . . .”

She stroked his hair. “Not yet, darling,” she said softly. “There’s plenty of time.”
