This book would have ended twenty-five pages in without Laisha Rosnau and her class on outlining. Lawrence Hill’s Booming Ground Mentorship at UBC gave me the courage to continue. Thanks also to the SPIN writing group, Mary, June, and Jen for inviting me to readings and welcoming a genre writer into their midst.

A big thank you to kc dyer for pointing me to the KidCrit writing group, run by Marsha Skrypuch. Their feedback made the book much better, together with critiques by Hélène Boudreau, Helaine Becker, Carmen Wright, Sharon Jones, Valerie Sherrard, Darla Paskell, Reisa Stone, Shari M., Ashley, and Ivana.

Thanks also go to preliminary readers Tim Keating and Trish Loye Elliott.

Heather McDougal created the gorgeous cover, cleaned up my maps and put up with my nit picking.

For helping me to choose between cover designs, a big shout out to Karen, Sara and Julia Cauty, Colette Richardson and the young ladies at York House. Also Tenaya, Genevieve, Athena and Ruby, Hélène Boudreau, Patricia Bow, Stephen Geigen-Miller, Veronica Steiger-Gaboury, Sandra Wickham, Dan Wells, and Keffy Kerhli.

Saroya’s adventures will continue in
