He pushed away from her, that word searing into his heart like a brand. “I do not love,” he announced angrily, moving back to his seat. A cascade of memories flooded through him with the declaration of that simple word. With determination, he compartmentalized the unwanted visions and the excruciating pain they evoked.

Once again, he was the trainer, the Master of the scene.

However, he still seethed inside. Thane had set up the evening specifically to avoid complications—and now this. What was it about the girl that caused him to disregard his plans so readily?

Thane stared hard at Brie, noting something in her eyes that unnerved him. With a calmness he did not feel, he lectured her. “Miss Bennett, you cannot confuse the emotions of a scene for real life.”

“Sir, I…”

“Enough. We are done for the evening.”

A stifling silence filled the void, but it was what he needed. Thane was incapable of conversation. He was in the midst of an inner battle, keeping the demons of his past at bay. But he felt for Brie. The pain and uncertainty expressed in her gentle face cut like a knife. He had failed her this evening.

When the limo pulled up to her apartment, he explained, “Although the fur comes with me, the rest is yours to keep.” The pearls had been meant as a lasting reminder, but now he knew they would hold no value for her.

“Have a good evening, Miss Bennett.”

“Thank you, Sir,” she replied respectfully, despite her obvious disappointment.

Always my obedient sub,
he thought wistfully.

She left the limo, giving him a last lingering look. He felt the urge to call her back, but refrained. It was better to leave. He could not trust himself around her.

As the limo pulled away he glanced back, admiring the glow of the moonlight accentuating Brie’s feminine silhouette.

Truly, a goddess among women…
