Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, I saw (during a flash of lightning) a huge chain strung across the river. The pirates had snaked it across the river in attempts to stop the passage of our boat, so they could pirate us.

But now the boat had no way of stopping and we hit that chain going fast. The chain caught just below the second deck and cut through the boat like a chainsaw.

I took a quick glance to see if Balow was close by – he wasn’t.

I had no choice. I had to jump over the edge and take my chances with river. I pulled my straps tight on my backpack and leaped from the deck in the cold, dark, swirling water. I was now swimming for my life in a raging river, surrounded by pirates, in the dark, and all alone again.
