“I’ll always miss you,” Callie said, wishing they could stay forever in the safe netherworld between night and day. “Always.”
“Then I’ll have to come back soon.”
Maybe that wouldn’t be enough, Callie thought as she stood in the doorway to Maggie’s room. The girl was blinking, just starting to wake up. Her classes started late today, so she could sleep in. Callie liked her right from the start, but she had no idea how much she would grow to love her. Rebecca’s daughter. Their family.
She didn’t want to walk away even though it might be the only way to keep this beautiful house of cards from tumbling down.
“Hey.” Maggie noticed her standing there and swung her legs over the edge of her bed. “Are you sad?” she asked worriedly. “Why?”
“It’s nothing,” Callie said, hugging her close so the girl wouldn’t see the lie in her face. “Everything is going to be all right.”
