Prologue

“Are you sure you don’t want to come with us darling?” Mom asked me.

I tore my eyes away from my phone. I’m currently texting Chad, my boyfriend. “I’m sure.” I smiled at them.

My twin sister rolled her eyes at me. We’re exactly the same, there were times people confused us. The only difference is that she’s the shy one and I’m more… free spirited.

“You’re missing out, mom will take us to the game store!” Mitch, my seven year old brother, smiled like a kid who got a piece of candy.

“She thinks she’s too old for that.” Hester roller her eyes at me. Again.

“Mom can I hang out with Chad?” I changed the conversation.

“Where?” She eyed me suspiciously.

“His house.” I panicked as my mom started to shake her head. “His mom will be there, I promise to be good! Please mom.”

“I don’t know, what do you think Ed?” Mom asked dad.

My dad shrugged. “Let the girl have some fun, she says that Maggie will be there. Nothing bad will happen.”

Mom sighed and nodded. “Fine but I want you home by eight okay?”

I started to protest but then Hester hissed: “Take what you can get.”

I made a face at her and then nodded. “Thanks mom.” I hugged her and then ran upstairs to change.

Chad likes it when I wear short stuff so I got a skirt that reached mid-thigh, that’s the shortest I could get. Then slipped on a red tight shirt. Put on the two inch heels my dad bought me for my birthday and was ready to go.

By the time I reached downstairs my mom and siblings were gone. Dad shook his head at me but didn’t say anything. He keeps telling me how Chad doesn’t want to just hold hands and walk down the park. We’ve been together for two months, sure he is exaggerating.

Minutes later we were outside Chad’s house. I ran out of the truck and knocked on the door. Maggie came out and greeted me with a kiss on the cheek then waved at my dad.

“Chad, darling, Keller is here!” She yelled at the start of the stairs.

“Coming!” Chad yelled back. It took him a minute to get down the stairs and pull me to his room. “Don’t bring us cookies mom!” He warned and made me chuckle.

Then he turned to me. “Gorgeous.” he smiled and began to kiss me passionately. Things were always like that with Chad. After a couple of seconds we came apart and sat on his bed.

“There’s this party tomorrow night, Ellen is hosting it. Want to go?”

I moved uncomfortably. Ellen was nice to me when Chad was there, otherwise she treated me like some cheap whore. I tried to talk things through with her but she just doesn’t like me. Weird thing is that she gets along just fine with my twin sister, Hester.

“Come on, babe, it’ll be fun. What do you say?” Chad whispered in my ear, then bit my earlobe.

I sighed. “Fine.”

“Awesome.” he grinned. “Wear something sexy.”

I chuckled. “Only you would want that.”

“I want you Keller.”

Then we were kissing again. I don’t love him but I like him a lot. We came apart and I saw the rain from the window.

“Mom doesn’t like to drive in the rain.” I said as I stood looking out the window.

Chad came behind me and hugged me, rested his chin on my shoulder. “She’ll be fine.”

“I know. Hester wont let her drive if mom feels sick.” I felt more secure to know that my sister was with them.

“About your sister…the time when you missed school because of a cold, I sort of confused you guys. She made things clear…very clear.”

I turned around. “What do you mean?”

“Before I started dating you she told me she liked me, but who I truly wanted was you. That day she made things clear…” he cleared his throat. “She stepped aside or something like that. But it’s been bugging me since then, I wanted to let you know.”

I felt a warm feeling inside me. He’s been honest which means he cares enough for me. Then rage, I felt angry at myself for not noticing or asking my sister if she felt something for Chad.

“I cant do this.”

“What do you mean?” Chad asked a bit panicked.

“We cant be together.”

“Why?”

“Because my sister
loves
you and I cant do this to her. I cant Chad.”

“Keller.” He said my name and I turned to him. “I love
you.
Please don’t do this to us. Don’t you love me?” he graved my shoulders and stared intently at my eyes.

“Chad I-”

“Keller we have to get to the hospital. Your mom had an accident.” Maggie burst inside the room.

“What?!”

“Just grab your purse we need to leave.” Maggie pushed us both out of the house.

Half an hour latter I found myself running to my father’s arms. Mom and Mitch died instantly, Hester was in intensive care. But they let me get inside for a couple of minutes.

“Hey.” I said in a small voice.

“Keller, it was an accident. Mom didn’t-”

“Shh. Don’t talk.” I placed my hand over hers. “I’m sorry.”

Hester frowned. “About Chad. You love him.”

A tear drop slid down her cheek. I whipped it away. “Don’t worry I broke up with him. I’m so sorry.”

She shook her head. “Don’t-” her eyes widened and she began to choke.

“Doctor!” I walked out of the room and kept yelling for someone to help me. Doctors came inside the room and pushed me away. Minutes later one came back.

“I’m sorry.” Was all he said and left.

The shock of loosing my mother, my little brother and my twin sister all in one night didn’t let the tears fall. I just stared at the doctor wishing he would come back and say it was some sick joke.

Dad hugged Maggie and Chad comforted me in his arms. “I’m so sorry, Keller.”

Chapter 1

Three years later

“Dad I’m going to the Brooks’ home. They are going to a dinner deal, I need to baby-sit Michael. Don’t wait for me.” I kissed my father’s cheek.

“Be careful out there.”

I nodded. Ever since the accident he doesn’t like it when I drive on the rain, or when I drive at all.

With a deep breath I got out of the house and inside the car. Taking care of Michael is war. The little devil was a force to be reckoned with, worst part is that he does it to bug me. When his parents are present he’s the sweetest boy ever. But I need the job. We need the money. My dad is sick and cant work, so I have to take care of that. My studies are even on pause. I finished high school early, at the age of sixteen. I don’t like to brag but I am smart. My seventeenth birthday was two weeks ago and my dad didn’t remember.

I turned off the engine of my car and walked up to the porch of the Brooks’ house.

One of the maids opened the door and let me inside.

“Ah there you are Keller! We already left food on the fridge, the maids are taking the night. Oh and make sure Mickey is in bed before nine. Honey did I forget anything?” Mrs. Brooks turned to her husband who was struggling to get his tie right.

“Don’t give him candy if you know what’s good for you.” he winked.

I nodded.

“We’ll pay you once we get back. Take care of my baby.” Mrs. Brooks hurried after her husband out the door.

“If they only knew.” I mumbled.

“War!” Michael came out with a water gun and got me all wet.

“Michael you’re making a mess! Give me that gun.” I ran after him.

After half an hour of chasing the little devil I fed him. To my dismay there was a misplaced bar of chocolate and he graved it.

“Michael give me that.”

“No! Its mine. Founder’s keepers of all the galaxy even the tiny stuff this neat.”

My face turned into a big question mark. What the hell did he say? “I’ll keep it safe for you, give it to me.”

He opened the bar and smiled triumphantly when I missed the bar and he took a bite.

The result? A hyper Michael running around the house, throwing everything around. At the end he fell asleep from exhaustion on the sofa. The living room looked as if a hurricane passed through it. Really bad.

“Come on little guy.” I carried him to his bedroom.

Deep inside he’s a good kid, but is yelling for attention. Bad thing? His parents don’t see that.

It was around one in the morning when the Brooks arrived. They gave me my money and I left home. I had to drink around three cups of coffee so I wouldn’t fall asleep behind the wheel.

My dad was already in bed when I arrived. With no energy at all I just fell on my bed and passed out.

-

Another day passed. But they were all the same. Get up, feed my dad, read then my worst nightmare: go baby-sit another boy who enjoyed to make me run after him.

I had just arrived home when I got a phone call.

“Hello?”

“Is this Keller Adzharia?”

I frowned. “Yes, who is this?”

“I saw you’re announcement on the newspaper, I’m Emma Gaynor.”

“So you want me to baby-sit for your kid?”

“Ah, yeah something like that. Mitch needs special cares, can you come to my house tomorrow morning please?”

“M-Mitch?” I gasped. The same name as my brother, there were times were I wish it was me who had died.

“Yes. Can you come tomorrow around nine?” Emma Gaynor asked nicely over the phone.

“Of course I’ll be there.” I scribbled down the address, my heart was pounding.

If it’s the Emma Gaynor I imagine…dear lord I will be working with royalty.

Chapter 2

I woke up a bit groggy. It was seven and I have to be at the Gaynor’s residence at nine. With a grunt I got out of bed and walked inside the bathroom, brushed my teeth and then got inside the shower. The water was unbelievingly cold.

As I turned off the shower I heard the front door open, maybe Maggie is here. I wrapped the purple towel around me and got out of my bathroom. Stood in front of my mirror and began to comb my hair. It’s naturally wavy, I dried it and then turned to slip on some underwear. There was a knock on my door.

“Come in.”

“Hey darling! Ed tells me you’ve got a business deal.” Maggie smiled at me.

“It’s just another babysitting job, nothing big.” I ran my hand through my clothes. All of them were too short or too tight, not my kind of thing anymore.

I looked for some decent pants.

“Nothing big? The Gaynor’s asked you to work with them!” She took a glance at my clothes, a sad shade took over her happy eyes. “Darling you’re not wearing that.”

“Why not?” I said defensibly.

“That’s not your type.”

“It is.” My lower lip trembled.

“Honey we both know it isn’t. You’re not Hester, she’s gone you have to let her go.” Maggie gripped my shoulders.
