“So if I wasn’t fertile?”

“You’d still be in danger because you’re a human female.” Drew sighed softly. “I’m sorry I frightened you, but Kallum and I need you to understand the difficulties human females face at the moment.”

“At the moment? You think things will change?”

“I do,” Drew said, leaning back so that she could see the smile on his face. “It might take a while, but most Desconians look forward to the day when human women can have the same freedoms as every other person on the planet. The fertility program Kallum is working on may even help alleviate some of the pressure.” She nodded, smiling, too, when she thought of her friend Jenelle. Kallum’s experimental procedure was still in the early stages, but so far everyone involved seemed quietly optimistic. It had been amazing to realize that infertile Desconian women might get the opportunity to experience pregnancy for themselves if Kallum’s theories and research proved correct.

“I hope it works,” she said sincerely as she leaned down to lift her son into her arms. Despite the terror and trauma of his creation, Alex was a true joy in her life. Watching him grow and learn in a safe environment was truly amazing.

“I hope it works, too,” Drew said, pressing a kiss to her lips and then stepping away. “Hopefully soon they’ll be able to make the procedure available to anyone who wants it. Until then, unfortunately, you’ll just have to let us protect you.”

“I suppose I can live with that,” she said with a bright smile. The very simple truth was that having them both care for her was an amazing feeling. Perhaps one day she might come to resent the restrictions to keep her safe, but for the moment she would bask in the warmth of being truly cared for. Only one other person had ever made her feel that way.

Drew must have noticed her change in demeanor as she thought of her time on Earth. He stepped closer, rubbed a hand over her arm, and waited patiently for her to explain. “David?” he asked quietly when she hesitated to say her friend’s name out loud. She nodded ever so slightly. It seemed very selfish to be thinking of another man when she was trying to build a relationship with Drew and Kallum.

“It’s okay,” Drew said, holding her close again. “David was a very important person in your life. It’s okay to think about him.”

“Thanks,” Ally said quietly, hugging both her son and Drew closer. “It just seems strange to think about him at the same time that I’m hoping that you’ll make love to me.”

“Make love,” Drew said with a soft sigh. “That’s a wonderful way to describe it. Humans really did get it right for a while.” Ally agreed. Over the past few weeks they’d all taken to watching a thing humans had once called a “television series.” Ally had no idea what a “television” was, but the stories depicting life on Earth many centuries ago were amazingly engrossing. It was almost impossible to imagine her home planet had once been a lot like Descon was now.

“When will Kallum be home?” Ally asked, trying not to sound as shy as she felt. It was only now occurring to her that Drew and Kallum had likely been waiting for her to be ready, to give them some sort of sign, before taking their relationship to the next level.

Drew glanced at the wall display. “Soon,” he said with a grin. “Perhaps we can encourage Alex to take a long nap this afternoon.”

Ally grinned as a mixture of excitement and fear curled through her belly. Facing her demons wasn’t going to be easy, but she knew without a doubt that Drew and Kallum were the men who could help her through it.

Kallum came home to laughter.

Alex squealed in delight as he used the furniture to pull himself into a standing position. He wasn’t quite so happy when he fell on his butt, yet it didn’t stop the little tyke dragging himself back up to a standing position again. “Did I miss his first step?” Kallum asked, feeling just a little disappointed. Rationally he knew it was something that would likely happen while he was at work, but it was a moment he would have loved to have shared with his partners. They might not be officially a triad, but Kallum was already thinking of Ally and Alex as family.

“No,” Ally said with a warm smile. “He hasn’t quite managed that first step, but judging by the determination on his face it won’t be long.”

Kallum smiled as the woman stepped into his embrace. She’d come so far in such a short time that he had to keep reminding himself not to be too eager. He looked forward to the day she would join him and Drew in their bed, but he was patient enough to wait for her to be ready.

“Did you have a good day?” Ally asked as she leaned back to see his face. Kallum was inordinately pleased that she managed to do so without breaking their embrace.

“I did, actually.” Too often his days were filled with giving bad news to patients, but today had brought him two patients with unexpected, but very welcome, pregnancies and three babies delivered safely. As good days went, it was definitely there at the top of the pile.

“Perfect,” Drew said with a wide smile. He lifted Alex into his arms, despite the child’s protest. “I’ll get this one ready for his nap. While I get Alex settled why don’t you tell Kallum what you told me?”

Ally nodded, but seemed suddenly very shy. She was momentarily distracted giving her son a kiss good-night, but then she fidgeted in Kallum’s embrace once more. A little unnerved by the sort of jittery, unsure behavior he hadn’t seen from Ally in several weeks, Kallum very carefully lifted her chin with his finger so that he could see her eyes.

Again she gave him that shy smile.

“What is it, Ally?” he asked, feeling as if the world was about to drop out from under his feet.

“I thought maybe we could…um…That is if you feel…” She glanced around the room, looking at everything except him.

“It’s okay, Ally. You can tell me anything. You know that.”

His stomach churned as he waited for her to announce her intention to go back to the compound. Drew’s reaction surprised him. Up until this very moment Kallum would have said his husband loved having Ally here, but judging by his happy reaction maybe he’d read the man incorrectly.

Ally shook her head, lifted onto her toes, and pressed a kiss to his mouth. At first he thought it was a good-bye kiss, but then her tongue ran along the seam of his lips and it suddenly seemed something much more appealing. He pulled her closer, letting her deepen the kiss as his cock filled and all of the delicious things they could do together wound through his mind.

He almost thought he was imagining her soft touch when she slowly ran her hand across the hard bulge in his pants. He could scarcely breathe when she sighed into his mouth.

“Ally?” he asked, because he had to know. If this was good-bye he needed to know first.

“Please make love to me,” Ally said breathlessly.

“Why?” he asked reflexively. Judging by her shocked reaction it was the exact wrong thing to want to know. But he didn’t want her doing anything because she felt she owed them something. They didn’t need “payment” for having her and Alex in their home—especially not this kind of payment.

Ally swallowed twice before she could speak, but it was her words that proved how brave the woman truly was. “Because I’m ready to face my demons. I want to build memories to replace my only knowledge of sex.” She gave him a sweet smile that made his heart squeeze with emotion. “And because I really want to build a life here with you and Drew…if you’ll have me.”

“If?” he asked with a smile he couldn’t suppress. “Ally, there’s no ‘if’ involved. Drew and I love you and want you to stay.”

She placed a hand against his cheek and let him see the emotions in her eyes. “Well that works out then, because I want to stay right here. I want me and Alex to be a part of your family.” She leaned up to kiss him again. “And I want to have yours and Drew’s children.”

“You’re sure?” Kallum asked, just a little worried that he was dreaming.

“More sure than anything else I’ve ever known.”

Ally wasn’t positive she knew where the words were coming from, but as they passed her lips she knew them for the truth that they were. She would always care for and miss David, but she wanted the future these two men offered.

“Marry us,” Drew said as he came back into the room. Alex was still in his arms looking sleepy after his diaper change, but in some ways it felt fitting for her son to be here as they discussed the future. Drew and Kallum already loved Alex as if he were their own flesh and blood. She had no doubt that they would feel the same even when they had children from their own seed.

She raised an eyebrow, waiting for Kallum’s reaction to Drew’s demand.

“Absolutely,” Kallum said, holding his arm out for Drew to join them. “Make us the happiest men on the planet and say yes.”

She grinned, but couldn’t resist the urge to tease Drew just a bit. It was truly amazing how comfortable she felt with these two men. “I’m sorry, but was there a question in there somewhere?”

They both answered at the same time. One said no and one said yes.

Drew laughed, pressed a kiss to her lips, another to Kallum’s, and said, “Not a question. It was most definitely a demand. We won’t give you a chance to say no.”

Kallum gave him a slightly bemused look, but didn’t say anything.

“Well I suppose it works then, because if you
had
asked my answer would most definitely have been…” She waited long enough for Drew to roll his eyes. It was clear he already knew what her answer would have been if he’d actually asked. “Yes.”

Chapter Six

“Yes.”

What a lovely sounding word…

Every day Drew was completely amazed by Ally’s resilience. She’d grown up in the most horrendous of circumstances, on a planet that no longer cared for its youth, and had experienced horrors he could barely imagine. Yet, she was not only able to smile and laugh but was willing to claim the love that he and Kallum desperately wanted to give.

He knew enough about the aftermath of trauma to know that her problems weren’t completely gone, but he had every intention of being there to help her through them. It was going to take time, sensitivity, and effort to help her overcome everything that had happened to her before landing on Descon, but the woman was definitely worth it.

“Say good-night, Alex,” he said to the sleepy youngster in his arms.

“Nigh-nigh,” Alex said with his cute little backward wave. Kallum leaned over and pressed a kiss to the baby’s head.

“Sleep well, little man,” he said affectionately, not quite releasing Ally as she kissed her son good-night. “Hurry back,” he said to Drew with a wink.

“Absolutely,” Drew replied with a soft laugh, “but it’s okay to start without me.”

Kallum gave him a wicked grin and then lifted Ally into his embrace. She looked surprised by the move but didn’t protest. After only a moment of uncertainty she wrapped her arms around Kallum and tucked her head against his collarbone. It was probably just fanciful thinking, but she certainly seemed to fit perfectly in his husband’s arms.

Alex yawned, obviously not impressed by the adults’ behavior, and snuggled closer to Drew.

“Come on, little man, time for that nap.”

Alex was almost asleep by the time Drew placed him in his cot. The room he and Ally shared had a connecting door to Drew and Kallum’s bedroom, but they’d never used it. Perhaps now was as good a time as any. Drew switched the intercom on so that they would hear Alex if he stirred and then very quietly left the room.

What he found in his own bedroom made him smile.

* * * *

Terrified of overwhelming Ally with his need for her, Kallum was trying desperately to hold on to his control. Only a moment ago he’d joked with Drew to hurry back, but the reality was that he needed his husband here. He needed to know Drew would see something if he missed it.

“It’s okay,” Ally said, touching his face softly. “I’m not going to freak out. I know I’m safe here.”

Her soft reassurance caught him by surprise. All this time he’d been trying to make certain that Ally was comfortable in his home it hadn’t actually occurred to him that Ally would be learning things about him, too. Apparently she’d grown rather adept at reading his moods.

“I love you,” he said very sincerely. It was probably a little premature to be saying the words, but he wanted Ally to know that whatever happened in this bedroom between the three of them, it was always an act of love. He startled slightly as the door to Ally and Alex’s room opened up and Drew stepped through. He couldn’t help but smile back when he saw the grin on his husband’s face.

“I could be wrong,” Drew said as his smile grew wider, “but I think you two might be a tad overdressed.” He moved up behind Ally and gently ran his hands over her shoulders. “Would you like some help undressing, or would it be better for you to do that yourself?”

Ally nodded and smiled shyly. “Thank you,” she whispered as she stepped away slightly and started to undo the front of the shirt she wore. She hadn’t quite gotten into the habit of wearing the more revealing outfits typical of Desconian women. Kallum knew her reaction to the clothing was related to what had happened to her and was very glad for Drew’s suggestion that she undress herself.
