Chapter One

Pete Sanders sullenly munched on
his fourth gluten-free Danish pastry as he watched the other mated members of
the New Haven pack from the corner of his eye.

Most of the werewolves didn’t
bother with
pretense
. Socializing
instantly went out the window since the Christmas party started. Most of the
delicious
feast
on the table was
forgotten along with the cold pile of presents underneath the brightly colored
lights of a massive pine tree.

Pairs devoured and rutted each
other in various states of undress like it was their last hour on earth while
‘Jingle Bells’ played from an old stereo. Even Pete’s Alpha, Carlos Medina, the
gracious host of their little get together, was busy fumbling for the jeans
zipper of his mate in one corner.

The ache inside him continued to
fester. Pete wanted to scream out his frustration, but instead he numbly
munched on his pastry. After the rocky events of the past year, he wondered if
things would turn out for the better
or
the worse.

Pete was happy for his health-conscious
pack mates.
Really.
After the New
Haven pack finally settled the war with the Starr Mountain Pack, one of the
more powerful werewolf packs in the region, everything was back to normal.

“Awkward isn’t it? It feels like
we’ve crashed an exclusive porn party.”

Pete was frozen in place at the
sound of the husky voice. He tried to still his traitorous, fast-beating heart.
The comment came from Fabio. The olive-skinned, dark-haired, and gorgeous eye candy
was one of the new wolves who came over from the Starr Mountain pack when it
disbanded.

A deliciously buffed and unmated
wolf, Pete decided. He also knew Fabio played on his
team
because his gaydar had
pinged
loudly the first time he laid his eyes on Fabio in New Haven’s only gym.

Most of the wolves worked out at
the fitness center to keep in shape. Pete only happened to be there because
Carlos decided to conduct a pack meeting there to introduce the new pack
members. After that, Pete had been religiously going to the gym to take a peek
here and there at Fabio’s impressive pecs and six-pack abs.

“I mean don’t get me wrong. Never
before have I’ve felt such strong and enviable pack bonds between an alpha and
his pack, it’s just…” Fabio hesitated, fumbling for the right words to say.

“Uncomfortable,” Pete finished for
him.

He unconsciously flicked away the
pastry bits stuck on his red and green striped polo shirt. Now Pete was wishing
he had worn something less holiday themed.

“Oh yeah. Uncomfortable.” Fabio’s
eyes flickered around the room while he took a swing of his beer.

Pete wondered what the hell the
other man was thinking. Was Fabio gauging his prospects, who he was taking home
for the night? The moon was full this Christmas Eve, and a full moon only meant
one thing to shifters. It was essentially mating season, but would a guy like
Fabio even consider Pete?

As guys went, Pete fared on the
below-average scale and wasn’t likely to attract Fabio’s attention. Hell, guys
like Fabio didn’t look twice at guys like Pete.

Pete worked in New Haven’s only
gaming shop, selling consoles and video games. Pete also still lived with his
mom, who miraculously found another mate when the Starr wolves crossed over. He
was happy for her too.
Really.

Werewolves mated for life. His dad
and mom had been a couple since high school, were bitten together by a random
werewolf, and they joined Carlos’s pack together. After his dad
died
, Pete didn’t think she’d find anyone to
ease her loneliness. Pete had a feeling his mother and her new mate would send
him apartment hunting soon.

He didn’t mind moving out, but it
was still a bitter reminder how the fates apparently decided to let his mother
find her second mate before Pete could even find his first. All Pete could hope
for was to somehow get Fabio drunk, desperate, and horny enough to mate him.

Pete silently ticked off his
competitors. He didn’t have to worry about the females in the pack because
Fabio swung solely for the all-star male team, and most of the males in the
pack were mated. For once, Pete actually stood a chance and he wasn’t about to
screw it up.

“I guess the
only
way to make the situation bearable is to
join the party, eh? Shall we continue this conversation to a more private area,
Pete?”

Pete stared at Fabio, unsure if he
heard his words correctly. Their conversation had meandered to meaningless
fluff. From a basketball
team
Pete had
never heard about, to complaints about the other wolves always camping at the
local grocer’s heath food section. Had Pete missed something important?

“What?” Pete asked dumbly, suddenly
aware of how close the other man was and how Fabio’s dark eyes were solely
trained on him.

“I think you heard what I said,
Pete.” Fabio’s voice was low, rough, and uncommonly serious.

Pete always saw Fabio as someone
who didn’t take things seriously. Fabio always seemed to be laughing with the
other more powerful wolves of the pack, as if he could never run out of things
to joke about. Fabio certainly wasn’t laughing now and the sheer intensity of
his gaze scared Pete a little. A shiver of excitement went down his spine.

Fabio’s touch was like a brand. His
hand was large and deliciously rough as he curled it around Pete’s wrist.
“Let’s stop playing games. You’ve dragged this particular game long enough
don’t you think? I’m not usually a man who tolerates games, Pete.”

Oh God, was Pete really not
dreaming?

“What game?”

Fabio closed the distance between
them, until Pete could feel the other man’s hard muscles colliding with his
lean and skinny frame. He swallowed, aware of his own traitorous cock rising,
and the visible bulge in Fabio’s jeans rubbing against his own jeans. The beast
sharing half his soul woke, aroused and hungry. Pete could see it stalking
close to the surface, tasting and scenting the other wolf.

“I’ve seen the way you look at me
in the gym, but I’ve enough of playing hide-and-seek,” Fabio hissed against his
ear.

Pete could see the other man’s wolf
now, large, furry, and dangerous. Its amber eyes speared through his own wolf
just as Fabio’s hungry gaze pierced through him.

Fuck. Never before had Pete wanted
anyone so badly in his life.

“I didn’t think a man like you
would notice someone like me.”

Pete gasped when Fabio pulled him
in close and grinded his body against him, making him shudder with need. Pete
wanted to reach out and rip at the other man’s clothes and then his own so
there was nothing in the way of their skin touching, caressing, and meeting.

“Little wolf, you have no idea how
much time I’ve spent thinking of you all these weeks,” Fabio whispered against
his ear. “Enough thinking. This Christmas Eve, I’m going to claim every inch of
you until that sweet body of yours belongs to me and me alone.”

“I’m dreaming. I think I need to
pinch myself,” Pete whispered.

Fabio slipped his hand under Pete’s
shirt and reached out to pinch his left nipple.

“Did that wake you, Pete?” The
sudden and forceful press of Fabio’s lips cushioned the brief pain.

Fabio kissed him savagely. The
other man’s lips and teeth were everywhere. Fabio sucked fervently on his lower
lip and pushed his tongue between his lips. Pete let Fabio in and Fabio began
to tongue fuck him thoroughly.

He was a sudden sea of sensation.
Fabio’s hands were everywhere, as if they didn’t even know where to begin
touching him. Pete would give anything to have those hands tearing off his
clothes and touching him all night long.

“Get a room, you two horny wolves,”
a voice interrupted.

Pete felt dazed as Fabio parted
from him, looking annoyed. He leaned toward Fabio, frightened he’d changed his
mind, but Fabio only brought him close to his chest. It took Pete a second to
realize it was Carlos who’d spoken, but there was no trace of anger in their
alpha’s voice, only amusement.

“About time you claim your damn
mate, Fabio. My guest room’s empty,” Carlos pointed out.

“My thanks, Alpha. Come on, Pete.”

Pete was shocked by Carlos’s
generous offer. The other werewolves who came over were initially met with
suspicion, but they had proven their loyalty over the past months. New Haven
was their home now, and they’d defend it with their lives.
