“Hopefully he can find others like him and train them so he can help even more people. Did Peter say anything to your mom about how talks with President Morgan were going?” Christian asked.

Paivi sat up in her chair. The sun was dipping lower now, sliding under the horizon. “It went well. The EOS are being settled back into their homes. The communities seem to be taking it well. And now they’re trying to find ways to allow the EOS people to use their powers in the workplace, if they actually have any. I guess by making it all public and showing how helpful they can be, they figure the rest of the citizens will accept them. Sterling is supposed to be coming back here too. He was going to drop Seamus off with his mom at Sterling’s place in L.A.”

“That sucks that his dad didn’t make it.” Christian lowered his gaze.

They were both silent for a moment.

“You could have gone with them, you know. I mean, I know Torsten will be president someday, maybe you could work your way into the cabinet or something.” Paivi turned toward Christian. His hair was still bleached from the sun and shaggy. He had yet to cut it. But his skin had returned to a normal color, as they were all finally able to spend time indoors.

“Funny.” The sun sank lower and he pulled off his sunglasses. His icy blue eyes glinted in the fading light. He reached across the space between them and grabbed Paivi’s hand.

A rush of energy flowed through his fingertips and into her palm. The energy was a shot of electricity and it danced through her veins, making her more awake, more aware. The warmth enveloped her and she could feel some of the pain in her soul subside.

Christian squeezed her hand. “I can’t think of any place I would rather be.”
